PRESIDENT’S REPORT

It only seems like yesterday that we were hanging the Christmas stocking and hoping that the jolly old chap would pay a visit, it is difficult to comprehend that this was about 5 weeks ago, and 2016 is well on its way. Talking of stockings, how did you fare. If the stocking was empty, I did warn you in my previous Report that the old fellow has ways of knowing what you were up to in 2015.

The weather during January has seen some large variations, three or four days of extremely hot days, followed by a similar number of days of extremely cool days. At least we managed to get some falls of rain, which has greened the countryside and reduced the fire hazards, but not pleasing everyone, as some of the farmers say rain at this time of the years only germinates all the rubbish weeds.

The first event for 2016 was the mid-week outing to Lake Canobolas. On a clear and mild morning about 14 cars from both Bathurst and Orange came together at the aptly named Half Way House at Vittoria for morning tea before proceeding to Lake Canobolas via Orange, Mitchell Highway, Fairbridge, Amaroo, and Nashdale. From the reports received, the morning tea at the Half Way House was most enjoyable. Due to other commitments I travelled direct to Lake Canobolas to join the group for a BYO picnic lunch. I must say it was very serene and relaxing under the large shady trees on the edge of the lake looking out across the water. After lunch and the usual comadradie and socializing, it was time to make our way homewards.

On the following Sunday, 17th, the Annual General Meeting was held at the Orange Ex-Services Club Country Club, with approximately 40 members in attendance The Minutes of the 2015 AGM were presented and accepted, and each of the 2015 Committee presented their reports. Two motions were presented, one for the 2016 membership fees to remain the same as 2015, the second to amend the Constitution to cover the new Conditional Registration Logbook System, both motions being accepted. Peter Single took over the chair as the Returning Officer, declaring all positions vacant and calling for nominations for the 2016 Management Committee. The 2015 Committee, with the exception of Vice President John Donohoe, were re-elected to their returned to their respective positions. John is not that well and did not seek re-election, and Sharon Aitken was elected to this position. I sincerely thank members for having the faith in the incumbent Committee to re-elect us to the 2016 Committee, I will certainly put all my effort in ensuring the Club continues as successfully as it has in the past, and I know that with your dedicated and hardworking Management Committee, I’m sure we can achieve that goal.

The Australia Day outing was to be the usual outing to Carcoar for their re-enactment celebrations, however organiser Mick found that this year we were to be located from our usual venue on the bank of the river to the Sports Ground, which is quite remote from the other activities. Following much discussion between Mick and the Carcoar Committee, he made the decision that we would travel to Bathurst and decide on a location from there. As I had to do some catching up with accumulated jobs on the home front, I was unable to make this event, so hopefully someone will have prepared a report for the Newsletter.

Our next major event will be the annual Gnoo Blas Classic Car and Bike Show at Jack Brabham Park in Orange on Saturday, 13 February. This year we will be again endeavouring to wrestle back the Best Presented Club Trophy and I urge as many members as possible bring their cars along for the display. This year the feature cars will be the Mazda MX5’s, a very popular car in the Club. As an added incentive, Regalia man Stewart, also being the chief chef on the day, will be presenting each member with a car a Cooler Bag suitably embossed with the ASCC logo. Just to confirm, it will be one each member, irrespective of the number of cars the member brings. Guests this year will be Garry Rodgers, Bill Buckle, Ron Tauranac, and Reg Hunt, a talented line up who should provide some great entertainment at the evening dinner. For those who feel inclined, there will be a tour of the district on the Sunday morning, returning to Cook Park for lunch.

The next significant event will be the Wellington Vintage Fair and Swap Meet, to be held at the Wellington Showground on Sunday, 6 March. I’m not sure of the arrangements at the time of preparation of this report; however the details should be in the Newsletter. This has been a popular event for the Club in the past.

Those fortunate enough to get away on the Tour of Tasmania commencing on Wednesday, 9 March, have been issued with a package outlining the details of the Tour, and will be now waiting anxiously for the day to arrive.

That’s about it for this month, so until next month, Smooth roads, and happy and safe motoring

Charles Stammers

January, Thursday 14th – Picnic at Lake Canobolas.

Bathurst and Orange members met at the Beekeepers Inn on a typically hot January morning with a forecast of possible thunderstorms later in the day. After a leisurely morning tea enjoyed in air conditioned comfort we hit the road en route to Lake Canobolas via the Mitchell Hwy, the northern distributor, the highway again to the Amaroo Rd then Borenore , Nashdale and onto the lake. Here we were joined by Sharyn Aiken and President Charles which brought the number of members up to a to a very respectable total of thirty including Colin Bardill of Blacksprings who was making his first run since recently rejoining the club. As hoped it was very pleasant under the shady trees where we set up our picnic lunch however after a couple of hours the predicted storms began to build up and following a brief squall we packed up our gear and headed for home. Members attending were: Peter Moras and Alan Evers, MGB-GT: Ian and Michelle Wallace, Mazda MX5;Col and Evelyn Turner, Jaguar XK8; Bono Marinovic, Ford Capri Club Sprint; Ralph Arnison, Lancia Fulvia; Colin Bardill, MGA coupe; Chris and Merran Olson, Mazda MX5; Chris and Judy Bayliss Toyota 86;Peter and Diann Harper, MGC-GT; Bruce Lorimer, BMW Z4; Alan Mitchell and Kim Kinninmont, Jaguar; Dave and Dawn Smedley Mercedes SLK 300; Rod and Leonie Wykes, 300Z, Brant and Brenda Weily, Lotus Cortina; Richard and Marianne Gardoll, Volvo C70; Tony and Judy Reppen, Triumph TR7; Sharyn Aiken, MGB; President Charles, modern.

January, Sunday 17th ASCC Annual General Meeting.

Summary of Reports, Decisions and Elections from ASCC Annual General Meeting

(N.B. A full copy of the 2015 AGM Minutes is available from the Secretary on request)

Charles Stammers welcomed all members present and considered 2015 to have been another very successful year, with an increasing membership and the Club in a very sound financial position. He stated that it had been a great pleasure representing such an enthusiastic and happy group of members and partners.

Chris Olson reported that the Management Committee met four times throughout 2015 with decisions made affecting you, our members, appearing in the club newsletter immediately following each meeting meaning that all members have been fully informed by these regular summaries of all important decisions your committee makes.

Alan Mitchell tabled 40 copies of The Income and Expenditure Statement for 2015, showing the ASCC has no debts as at 31/12/15. This will be submitted to the Dept. Fair Trading upon approval by members and committee after the next committee meeting.

Paul Hingston reported that as of today (AGM) there are 178 financial members. This is the highest recorded number of members in the history of the club. There were twenty members from 2014 who did not renew their membership in 2015 but on the plus side we welcomed thirty eight additional members. “Additional” as opposed to “new” because five were returning after varying periods of absence - and we love to see members returning after their circumstances change.

Richard Gardoll reported that at the start of 2015, the Club had 19 cars on historic plates. We have approximately half of our cars currently on the new RMS log book trial.

Along with Chris Olson, Richard has been making amendments to our constitution. Rules 7 to 12 related to historic plates have been re-written to fit the current RMS rules.

Peter Moras reported that he has endeavoured to have each month’s newsletter distributed on time each month, containing a variety of information and photos to keep members informed on the Club’s activities.

Mick Buckler and Peter Harper reported that they have been organising mid-week runs and weekend runs for five years and both are finding it increasingly difficult to come up with interesting venues. They would appreciate any suggestions and ideas from anyone.

Stewart Blowes reported regalia sales this year have been steady and he has reduced the amount of stock he is holding but stock can be easily ordered as required.

This year we have added a few new items for sale to club members. They are a coffee mug on which is printed the club logo and the member’s name or car marque and a new key ring with the club logo is also available along with our enamel car badges.

Peter Skulander reported that during 2015, short articles and technical information, taken from magazines held in the library were included in the ASCC’s monthly newsletter. Most articles chosen were in keeping with sporting cars owned by our members. Some articles featured unique sports cars, with other articles comparing the technical statistics and performance of two or more sporting car types.

After some discussion on 2015 fees the following motion was put to the meeting. The 2015 ASCC Management Committee proposes that the 2016 Annual Subscriptions for ASCC Membership remain the same as for 2015, ($40.00 for two members of the same family and $30.00 for an individual member.) Accepted on the motion of R. Gardoll/P. Moras CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY

After some explanation and discussion the following motion was put to the meeting. That the re-written clauses 7,8,9,10,11 and 12 of the ASCC Constitution as distributed to all members in the December 2015 ASCC Newsletter be accepted and the ASCC Constitution be re-written accordingly. Accepted on the motion of R. Gardoll/C. Olson CARRIED UNANIMOUSLY

Summary of Decisions from ASCC Management Committee Meeting held 17th January 2016

Charles Stammers welcomed all members of the 2016 ASCC Management Committee making special mention of new Vice President Sharyn Aiken.

Chris Olson announced the dates for the Management Committee Meetings for 2016. Throughout 2016, we will be asking our new ASCC Management Committee to meet on six occasions, each alternate month, starting with a short meeting today, the second meeting on 6th March in Bathurst, the third on 15th May in Orange, the fourth on 17th July in Bathurst, the fifth on 18th September in Orange and the sixth on 20th November in Bathurst.

Paul Hingston encouraged members to renew their membership via direct debit to our bank account. Our Treasurer reports that Direct Debits are now a large proportion of fees paid which saves a lot of work and costs.

Richard Gardoll reported that the 2016 Gnoo Blas Classic on 13th February would again be a mandatory event for all ASCC cars on Conditional Registration Plates to attend and display their cars.

Peter Harper reported that he and Mick Buckler have now been organising runs for five years and are both finding it increasingly difficult to come up with interesting venues. They would both appreciate any suggestions and ideas from anyone for future events and venues.

Mick Buckler apologised that he had been unable to attend some recent events and thanked those who had lead the events in his absence.

Mick Buckler reported that Japanese cars would be featured in the ASCC display at the Gnoo Blas Classic in 2016.

Stewart Blowes reported that a list of available regalia (with photographs) would be featured in future newsletters.

Peter Moras suggested that the responsibility for websites (ASCC 1930 and Shannons Car Club) should be with one person and not just bits and pieces done by just anyone, so that all sites can be effectively managed and controlled. After some discussion the following motion was put

The management of all ASCC websites is in future to be the sole responsibility of Peter Moras. All ASCC members are to avoid making any changes to these sites. All ASCC members are asked to use their personal email addresses for all personal communications.

The next meeting of the ASCC Management Committee will be held in the Bathurst Light Car Club rooms, at 10.00am on Sunday, March 6, 2016.

12. INSURANCE REQUIREMENTS

12.1 A minimum insurance cover of Third Party Property Insurance is required. Proof of a cover must be provided to the Club Registrar.

January, Tuesday 26th – Australia Day Run (Report by Mick Buckler)

It was an unusual day weatherwise for the time of the year, with members meeting at Orange Railway Station under a blue sky with a slight chill in the air. It was more like spring than midsummer .Seven members and their partners met for the days outing and it was decided to take the scenic road to Bathurst to avoid the holiday traffic on the Highway. We travelled out along Icley Road for approximately ten kms, then turning onto White Rocks Road. The surface of this road is pretty good with a few nice bends and some fantastic views to make the longer trip worthwhile. Unfortunately, this made our party a little late when meeting up with the members waiting for us at Bathurst. But we were soon forgiven, no shots were fired, and the usual friendly greeting and banter was exchanged. Some of our group were a little concerned that with it being a public holiday we may have difficulty finding a lunch venue, so there was no morning tea and we set off in search of lunch, with the O’Connell Hotel being a popular first choice. Our luck was in and we were soon all accommodated in the large outdoor area, which was perfect for such a day. The meal choice was varied, good value and being served pretty quickly. I think we were all pretty much full after our main course but I did see a few dessert’s being scoffed, so much for new year’s resolutions. Too soon it was time for us to think about leaving and start to head in various directions for home, but not before some of us payed a visit to Annie’s Ice-cream parlour in Bathurst.(more resolutions out the window). The day was a another successful outing with I hope many more to come for the year . Members Present:: Roy & Sheila Riley , John & Elaine Hawkey, Peter & Di Harper, Alan & Cherylin Mitchell, Stewart & Kerrie Blowes ,Chris & Judy Bayliss, Rod & Leone Wykes ,David & Dawn Smedley, Darryl & Helen Wilson, Bono & Sandra Marinovic, Richard Gardoll and Mick & Shirley Buckler. It seems to me that I might have missed someone off the list of member’s present, my apologies if that is the case MB.

dragging the chain with their renewals. It is still early in the year yet and I would hope to see similar

numbers to last by the end of March.

Don’t forget you can renew via direct debit. The Club’s BSB and Account details are included in the

membership renewal form , but here they are again ….Bank…NAB, BSB…082-774, Account…75-231-

2103.Please use your surname/member number as reference to enable cross matching.

HELP WANTED: It has been brought to my attention that some members have sold or replaced

vehicles over the last few years. Consequently, our records would be out of date. As we have to provide

vehicle statistics to the Council of Motor Club for our affiliation renewal, it is important to have our

record current. So if you are one of these members, could you please drop me an email with your current

vehicle information like Year, Make, Model, Rego.

Also, don’t forget to let me know ([email protected]) if any of your personal details have changed,

eg address, mobile or particularly your email. You can’t get your newsletter if we don’t have your

current email address if you have changed.

Don’t forget, our newsletters, along with the Club Constitution and For Sale items are listed in our Club

location with Shannons. Check it out at:http://www.shannons.com.au/club/carclubs/australian-sporting-car-club-inc/

Some of the Best of British – Classics, August 2004

When it comes to classic roadsters, Britain led the way for a number of decades. Here are some of the four best English sports cars produced over several decades. The Fifties – Without a doubt the Austin Healy 100 was a revelation. The death of the Austin A90 with a fully tooled up engine production line and nothing to insert it into. Donald Healey, by coincidence had a beautifully crated chassis and body style, but lacked a suitable stream of engines to power it. In 1954 the A90 powered Healy 100/4 was released. The Sixties – Enter the MGB 1800cc. One of the most affordable and reliable open top sports cars of this decade. It was the first of the MG’s to be built with no chassis, but a monocoque body structure. This made the MGB body lighter and stronger. The first car came off the assembly line in 1962 and quickly became the favourite all over the world. MGB owners know how good it is, cruising along with the top down listening to that lovely burble from the exhaust. The Seventies – The TR6 took over from the MGB during this decade. The MGB is a cruiser, where as the TR6 is a gutsy performer with its fuel injected six cylinder 150 BHP engine. The TR6 has a great mix of power, poise, handling and style all in equal measure. The throttle is light and the engine revs freely. The suspension is firm, but compliant and the steering is light. The Eighties – It seemed the only UK companies keen to exploit the roadster market were the specialists, such as TVR, Caterham and Morgan. Reliant came up with a quirky car to try and fill the void. The SS1 is a radical departure for the company. Spurred on by Lotus Elan’s plastic monocoque design and the run out of the MGB and the TR7. The Reliant SS1, designed by Mithelotti, has independent suspension and a range of Ford engines of 1500cc and 1600cc. Later cars were fitted with the 1,800cc turbo charged Nissan engine. The car has similar proportions and looks to the MX5. The Nineties – Enter the Lotus Elise. The Elise is a true open sports car. Nimble and raw engine performance make it a pure drivers car. Main competitors are the MGF and the RV8. The 1996 Lotus Elise was a sales sensation. It’s no soft egg, but an aggressive driver’s car. You sit low to the ground with the seats adjusted by sliding backwards or forwards. This is not really a regular driver due to its raw performance. Powered by a 1.8 litre 118bhp it gets you to 100km/h in under 6 seconds. Verdict - The TR6 was picked as the favourite, from this collection, to have in the garage for those Sunday drives.
