Evaluation occurs every five years and aims to; ascertain to what extent the school meets the programme standards and practices; improve the implementation of the program, identify strengths and weaknesses to enable growth and hear the voice of all stakeholders within the community. This week parents, students and staff met with our visitors and talked about teaching and learning here at St Michael’s.

Thanks to the members of school council and the parent community with took part in conversations with the visitors. The students and teachers also had a large role to play in the self-study process and sharing with the visitors. We are anticipating the feedback from the visitors, by mid Term 3, 2019. We look forward to this supporting the focus of our continued improvement in teaching and learning here at St Michael’s. As staff we are eager to continue to learn in all that we do and to enhance and improve the learning outcomes for students in a busy and changing world. I am proud of the staff and the students at our school for taking risks in their learning and ask that you continue to pray for them as they work and learn together. Our learning journey through Casel’s (2017) Social and Emotional learning competencies has continued this term with our fortnightly well-being talks in Assembly on Monday afternoons. “Social Awareness” and “Relationship Skills” are the current focus. Linking into my talks late last term about “Self Awareness” and how unique we all are, we have spent the last two assemblies learning about the different ways we communicate. Some of us find it very easy to communicate, initiate conversation, and/or understand what others are

communicating to us. Some members of our school community find communication a significant challenge. There may be various reasons for this. English may be an “additional language”, one may have a speech and/or language difficulty, perhaps another may be hearing impaired. Speaking personally as an individual who is hearing impaired, social conversation can present a significant challenge for me in particular settings. Individuals on the Autism Spectrum may also find social communication a challenge as they navigate the minefield of non-verbal cues associated with initiating and carrying on a conversation. As you can see, we are all different, however, we can always identify sameness among each of us. In Assembly we have role played some conversations that may occur at school between students and discussed how we “filter” these and decide whether comments from others contribute to our well-being (and we allow them in) or whether they need to be discarded. The filter we use is the “THINK” model. I’d love you to ask your children whether they can tell you what each letter stands for! The students have been taught that as each of us speaks, and also, as we listen, to THINK. We have wonderfully diverse and caring community here at St. Michael’s and I am so proud of the students for the way they celebrate their uniqueness and the uniqueness of others. Please feel free to contact me to chat more about our Social and Emotional Learning at St. Michael’s. Georgia Pope Diverse Learning Coordinator

Saturday 9th November P & F will be hosting the celebration dinner and silent auction at the Hahndorf Resort. Details about tickets will be available later in the year but for now, we are looking for families who may be able to donate some goods or services to our silent auction. If you have a business and are able to donate something to the P & F, please contact the school. Funds raised will go toward finishing our new Outdoor Learning Space. Sunday 10th November we are planning a celebration worship service followed by a family day with lots of free fun and games for the children

LLL School Banking is available to all students and is processed on a Wednesday. Bank books need to be in the letterbox, found in the office, no later than 9:00 am each Wednesday. For more information about opening up a student account head to www.lll.org.au.

Over the next couple of weeks ALL Bank Books will be sent to the LLL to have interest added. Books may take a little longer to be returned to students. Mrs Collins

Students across the school were involved in a variety of awareness activities this week which were designed to help them to understand the importance of reconciliation week. At assembly, our students learned a little more about the “Welcome to Country’ and why we use it in our school. Other students learned about the Stolen Generation and heard about the challenges faced by First Nation’s children. The MLC visited the Hahndorf Academy to view their exhibition, My Paintings Speak for Me. This exhibition was the story of Kunyi June Anne McInerney who was taken from her family at the age of 4 and placed in a mission at Oodnadatta. It was great to see our students considering the similarities and differences of the lives they have lived.

The new St Michael’s Lutheran School App is now available on the app store for iPhone/iPad and Google Play for Android.

This app will replace the Skoolbag App which will no longer be supported or updated. The St Michael’s Lutheran School App is developed by PCSchool to link into our Student Management System. Each parent will have their own login and be asked to set a personal password. You should have received two emails from the school last week. 1. Instructions on how to download & use the App

2. An individual email invitation from the school to register for the new app. Within this email there is a ‘click here’ link

If you have not received these emails, please contact the school.

Led by the SLC Environment Leaders, a group of St Michael’s students spent some time in our ‘scrub’, filling in gaps created by some of the plants that did not survive our dry summer. We are looking forward to watching our shrubs take off over winter to create a beautiful bird and butterfly attracting, native scrub.

Volunteering as at 1 July 2019

Please Read Our school policies, in relation to Child Protection, require ALL volunteers in our school to undergo a screening check. From 1 July the State Government is bringing in a requirement for people working with children to get a ‘Working with Children’ (WWC) check. This is a comprehensive screen which provides ongoing protection to keep our children safe and, like the DCSI screen, adheres to the Child Protection Act.

It is anticipated that the Working with Children Check will take at least 6 weeks, probably longer, to process. For this reason, we are urging our families to apply for the DCSI screen prior to July 1. The transition arrangements mean that the DCSI screen will remain valid for 3 years and it is currently very quick to process. A Police Clearance is no longer an acceptable form of clearance. If you do not have a DCSI or it has expired please email Lee-Anne at [email protected] your Full Name, DOB & Email address. Once these details are entered you will receive an email to confirm your identity. All volunteers at St Michael’s must also complete the Responding to Abuse & Neglect – Education & Care (RAN-EC) training for Volunteers. Volunteers who work with children (under 18 years) are mandated notifiers. They must understand notification and reporting child abuse requirements. The RAN training is updated by DECD every few years with the most recent update in 2018 which expires in 2021. The Responding to Abuse & Neglect training can be accessed via the following link Responding to Abuse & Neglect training. Should you have any questions please contact Lee-Anne in the office or by email [email protected]. After July 1 the school will be implementing new procedures for volunteers entering the school, to ensure that all people on site are cleared to work with children. You will not be able to volunteer at school or on camps or excursions without this clearance and so we urge our families to take the steps necessary to get the clearances, so that you are still able to participate freely in school life.

Parents are reminded that the school day begins at 8:50 am. The roll is marked at 8:50 am and if a child is not in class at that time they will be marked ‘unexplained absence’ which will be followed up with you. Students arriving after 8:50 am need to report to the front office where they will need to be signed in by their caregiver. If your child is absent or will be late for any reason the school needs to be notified. Now that we have the new School App, the School’s preferred method of receiving absence notification from parents are listed below:

Use the Create an Absence via the School App

Send an email about your child’s absence to [email protected] and copy in your child’s teacher

Ring the Office on 8388 7228 This should be done on the day of the absence before 9:00 am. If using the App first select your child’s name from the drop down menu at the top of the page before sending the absence notification.

Kindergym is held in the St Michael’s School Gym on a Thursday morning, 9:30 am - 10:30 am, during term time. Bring your child to enjoy a morning of movement and fun taught by a qualified PE and Gymnastics teacher. Complimentary First Session. Purchase a 5 week block for $40 or pay $10 per session.

If you need to collect your child during the day for an appointment etc please notify you’re child’s teacher &/or the office so that your child can be ready to be collected from the office, where they will need to be signed out by their caregiver. If your child returns to school the same day you will need to sign them back in at the office.

If your child needs any medication (including paracetamol) during the day, parents/caregivers must supply the medication to the school office in the pharmacy labelled container or package. (Please note that if your child needs to take medication/antibiotics 3 times a day, we request you give it to them before school, straight after school finishes and at bed time)

School staff are unable to dispense any medication to students without either an Action Plan / letter signed by a doctor or a signed ‘form to accompany medication’ available from the office. If your child does not come to the office to take their medication, we will endeavour to locate him/her but no responsibility is taken by staff for forgotten medication. If there is a need for long-term medication to be kept at school (ie. for anaphylaxis, asthma or allergies) the parent/caregiver should ensure that the medication is within its “use by” date and is clearly marked with the student’s name, and also it is accompanied by a current plan/letter from the doctor outlining the dose and frequency of the medication.

The past few weeks has seen St Michael’s students compete in some KO sport competitions. Last week our boys Soccer team played Hahndorf Primary in a game that was a lot closer than the score suggests. Our team played well but unfortunately couldn’t convert scoring opportunities and we eventually lost 5-0. We also hosted a round robin Netball competition against Hahndorf, Aldgate and St Michael’s this week. Our girls got off to a great start recovering from a slow start against Hahndorf PS to win 23-15. In their second match they came up against a much taller opponent in Aldgate PS. Despite their best efforts our girls went down 12-41. Aldgate went on to beat Hahndorf and move on to the next round. A special thanks to Mrs Luke for coaching and giving up her time. Next week will see some of our students compete at the Crows Girls Country Football Carnival, Girls KO Soccer against Mt Barker South and Boys KO Football against Lobethal and Birdwood.

Congratulations to our school Cross-Country team who won the adjusted trophy at the district SAPSASA cross country event last Tuesday. Pouring rain ensured that the track was wet, slippery and muddy for our 26 competitors who performed extremely well both as individuals and in the team events.

A special mention to Elle Rose Shearer who placed 1st in the 12yr girls and Ethan Fry who placed 2nd in the 12yr boys. We also had a number of team placing's including 1st in the 12yr boys and girls, 2nd in the 10yr girls team and 3rd in the 11yr boys.
