editorial Junior School Renovations and Playground Master Planning Earlier this year, I made reference to our planned renovations of the eastern wing of our campus and the fact that they were to be delayed until Term 3. We can now confirm that the school and the architects have put the work to tender. In the first instance, works will commence on the upper storey of the eastern wing and not the lower level as previously communicated. These works will commence early in Term 3 followed by the second stage which will involve the construction of the lower classroom renovations and ELC link. To accommodate stage 1, we will be bringing classes down from the upstairs east wing and accommodating them in the existing downstairs rooms. As part of the stage 1 works we will also need to bring in two portable classroom and we will be moving Science and Art into these teaching spaces from the commencement of Term 3. In addition to these works, we are also in the process of enacting our playground master plan which involves considerable landscaping and the installation and or modification of existing playground equipment and spaces. The JSPG have been involved in part of this process and have decided to commit $30 000 to the plan. The School will commit $70 000 as part of the stage 1 landscaping works. All of these capital improvements will enhance the quality of our teaching, learning and recreation spaces for the shorter and longer term. Walk to School Day This Friday, 24 May, all Junior School students and perhaps their families, are invited to take part in Walk to School Day. The walk departs from St Pat’s point at 8am sharp and will be followed by a healthy breakfast supplied in Watson Hall. Please see the flyer and map attached to The Echo for further details. Junior School Disco The Junior School Disco will be held on Friday, 31 of May in Watson Hall. The event will be staged in two halves: Years Prep, One and Two from 6pm – 7pm; and Years Three and Four from 7.15pm – 8.15pm The entry fee is $2 per child to be paid on the night of the disco. The children are encouraged to bring a clearly named drink bottle. Due to logistical and health risk management concerns, we will not be providing food at the disco and we ask that your children have eaten prior to attending the event. After delivering children to Watson Hall, parents are invited to partake in tea and coffee, provided by the JSPG. It is important that children are collected from their Home Room teacher promptly at the end of their session. The Year 4 Performing Arts Leaders decided on the theme of ‘Beach Party’ and the students are encouraged to dress up. We are looking forward to a fun-filled evening! Before School Supervision As the school doors open at 8am each day, students are asked to wait in the library between 8am and 8.15am. After 8.15am students are to be outside under the supervision of our Teachers on Duty. If the weather is inclement, then students are to wait in Watson Hall from 8.15am to 8.30am. All staff and students will be in their homerooms from 8.35am. Late Students As we move into the winter months, it is very important that all students arrive at school on time and ready for learning. All students must be in their Homerooms by 8:35 at the first bell each day. This time is critical for the Homeroom Teachers to explain the schedule for the day and to undertake a range of important administrative classes. Students who are late can become anxious and this doesn’t support a smooth, efficient and relaxed start to the school day. Illegal Parking Around the Junior School All parents need to be aware that we have had complaints from a number of medical and dental practices in our vicinity regarding parents parking illegally. The businesses have reported this on numerous occasions and the City of Ballarat Traffic Department has been advised. We would ask all parents to respect and observe all parking restrictions and obvious access points to these businesses. Lost Property We have now moved a large amount of lost property out of Watson Hall and back to the Junior School office. Parents are asked to please check for missing items of clothing and other possessions. Named possessions are being returned to Homeroom Teachers for return to the students in their classes. Parent Year Level ‘Get Togethers’ Parents are advised of the following ‘get togethers’ arranged by the respective JSPG classroom representatives. Later this week: Year 1 Parent Coffee Catch Up this Friday 24 May from 2pm at Gee Cees Café, 427 Sturt St – please join your Parent Reps: Sarah Munt, Rachael Broster, Brooke Nicholson and Zdenka Zajc. Year 3 Morning Tea on Monday 3 June after morning drop off at Racers Café on the corner of Webster St and Wendouree Parade – please join your Parent Reps: Deb, Caroline and Karina.

Lunch Order Price List We would request that all parents ensure that the 2013 Café College price list is being used for all student lunch orders. In recent weeks, a number of families have been using the 2012 price list and consequently, the orders have not been priced correctly. The 2013 price list is on connect@clarendon. sport Division Cross Country Championships On Friday 17 May some of our talented Ballarat Clarendon College students took part in the second stage (division level) of our interschool cross country competition. This involved competing against schools all around the Ballarat region. Students were competing for a place in the regional championships which are held in Hamilton this year. Ballarat turned on its typical “cross country weather” with a cool breeze and some light rain, but that didn’t bother our College runners. Some fantastic individual performances mean that some of our students will now go on to compete at the regional level in Hamilton on June 19. Congratulations and good luck to the following students in their respective age groups; Matilda Pearce (3rd), Olivia Moneghetti (4th) and Ben Fritch (6th). Well done to Ruby DeRuiter, Katie Ling, Sophie Grylewicz, Zoe Cowan, Stevie Clarke, Edwina Eppingstall, Ellie Kauffmann and Annie Blenkiron who also competed very well on the day; BCC were very well represented by some committed and talented athletes. Click here for photos Year 3 Netball Tournament On Monday, Grade 3 students finally got to enjoy and experience a real tournament in true Netball season style; cold and wet! But, that didn’t faze our students in the slightest, they were fantastic! For the last 6 weeks, students have been learning the rules of Netball and practicing their skills to apply in a game situation. Our netball tournament gave these students the opportunity to apply these skills and compete against their friends from other classes. The students had lots of fun and continued to learn about how to work in a team and demonstrate good sportsmanship. Our Netball tournament would have not been possible without the following people; Mrs Cowan, Mrs Macdonald, Mr Versteegen, Ms Hill and Mr Esdale. Thank you for your fantastic support with the children. Furthermore, thank you to the parents who came along to show their support on the day, it certainly provided a great atmosphere. After a huge effort by all of the children, the results were calculated. Congratulations to both the Monkeys and Emus for winning their respective divisions, and becoming the overall Netball champions. Well done. Click here for photos Year 2 European Handball Tournament At the completion of our Ball Skills Unit, the Year 2 student enjoyed a round robin tournament where they could display the skills they had learnt, developed and honed over 6 weeks. Each class was divided into 3 teams and each team played in a separate competition. It was rewarding for the teachers; Mrs McDonald, Mrs Cowan and Mr Stephens to see their students enjoy applying all the rules, teamwork, skills and game sense that had been drilled into them during PE lessons. jspg Junior School Disco As you are probably aware by now the Junior School disco will be run on Friday 31 May. The JSPG will have water on offer to thirsty children although we encourage all students to bring their own water bottles to drink from to reduce rubbish. We ask that you please help us by:

• Lining up in the corridor to your right when you drop off your children. • When collecting your children please line up in the corridor to your left. • When leaving the hall please leave through the outdoor courtyard.

Prep / Year 1 / Year 2: 6pm to 7pm Year 3 / Year 4: 7.15pm to 8.15pm The theme for this year’s disco is Beach Party. This year the JSPG will also be providing tea and coffee in the History Room (Number 103) for those parents who wish to stay while the disco is on. We hope this gives parents a warm, comfortable environment which you can use to socialise with other parents. Recipe Book Fundraiser Thank you to those who have submitted their recipes already. The deadline for the recipe submissions for our College Cookbook has been extended to the end of term, Friday 28th June, so please get your contributions in as soon as possible. We would be very grateful for at least 2 family favourite recipes and would encourage you to give us a small personal comment on each recipe e.g. “Maddy loves to cook this with her Grandma. Sue and Jack Jones – Parents of Lilly Year 4 and Tom Year 1” or “This lovely moist cake recipe was given to me by my Aunt and I make it regularly. The recipe originally came from the small town in Devon where her mother grew up. Although she died before I was born I have inherited the original recipe in her beautiful handwriting. Canned apples can be used but home prepared Granny Smiths are better! Jo Dixon – Parent of Luca Year 3, Oscar Year 1 and Toby 4 Year old Kinder.” We also would like to put with your recipe your children’s names that attend or attended college with the year level in 2013. We would love to also include any parent’s/grandparent’s names that are Old Collegians and their peer year. To help the children feel more involved in their cookbook we are encouraging them to bring the recipes to school and give to their home room teacher. Stickers will be placed on a tally sheet for their class to see who can provide the most recipes by the end of Term. Another exciting activity for the children is the opportunity for them to name the cookbook. We ask that they submit a suggestion of an appropriate name for the book. The winner will be acknowledged in the cookbook!!! Remember, we are looking for family favourites or even your own creation rather than a recipe from a published cookbook please. The recipe could be a soup, dip, entre, main, dessert, salad, cake, slices, biscuits, camping recipe, gluten free, nut free etc. etc. We are open to most ideas. Please take the time to view our poster near the office of our vision with the cookbook. Next year is Clarendon’s 150th anniversary, and we will be recognising this this also in the book with historical photographs. We hope it becomes a lovely keepsake for your family. The JSPG would like to thank Chris Brown (Head of Junior School), Ross Henderson (Auxiliaries Coordinator), Renae Nolan (Publications Officer) and Nikki Townsend (Graphic designer/ Book Publisher) and also a parent in the Junior School for the professional assistance and support so far. Click here for poster Mother’s Day Stall We had another successful Mother’s Day stall on Thursday 9 May and the JSPG would like to thank the Grade 3 parents who helped make it possible. Anna Dawkins, Belinda Matthews, Caroline Peters, Deb Clarke, Dee Tennant, Jamie Dwyer, Jamie McManus, Jo Dixon, Jocelyn Goldsworthy, Karina Palmer, Keegan Brouwer, Kristie Cowan, Lisa Clark, Paula Grylewicz, Rachael Broster, Suzy Richmond and Tania Dwane. Jane and Kate in the office as usual did an outstanding job of assisting the JSPG with this event. We are very thankful to everyone who helped. As we are producing new superior products there has been many changes made since photo day. Putting these changes in place has unfortunately slowed the process. We are working frantically with the school and the Lab and hope to have photos delivered in the next few weeks.

Junior School Footy Card Club AFL footy songs blurted out of the speakers in the JS. Due to the popularity of footy cards this year we have, through discussion with the students, made a "Footy Card Club". It is held each Wednesday lunchtime in the 2S Homeroom. It's a warm, friendly environment where students can trade, and learn to trade cards. There are 3 simple rules; 1. you sit next to a fellow trader and only trade with that person 2. you MUST swap like cards i.e. a common card with a common card, a silver card with a silver card... 3. you MUST have 2 or more of a card to swap The first meeting was a huge success where over 40 students filed into to learn or swap cards. We look forward to future successful meetings. GO PIES! Click here for photos

Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart is an exciting and non-competitive program which encourages children to become more active through skipping, learning new skills and raising vital funds for heart research and community health programs.

Page 12: Issue 75 22 May 2013 - clarendon.vic.edu.au · editorial . Junior School Renovations and Playground Master Planning . Earlier this year, I made reference to our planned ren ovations

Skipping is an excellent way for children to keep fit and healthy. Over the next few weeks, your child(ren) will be learning a range of fun skipping skills and new tricks. We will emphasise the importance of regular physical activity and the importance of healthy eating for a healthy lifestyle. Jump Rope for Heart is also a great way to encourage children to get involved in our community and support Australia’s leading heart health charity, the Heart Foundation. The Jump Rope team provide us with lots of resources and support to implement the program and in return we ask that students help by seeking sponsorship for their involvement. Sponsorship is easy – simply go online to www.heartfoundation.org.au/jumprope , click on the green ‘Kids Join Now’ button, and register your child today!

• A secure fundraising page will be created as soon as you register; all you need to do then is click the ‘Email Sponsors’ link to send your family and friends an email asking them for their support… It’s that easy!

• This is an easy, safe way for your child to monitor their progress, receive bonus prizes and even receive sponsorship from family and friends who are further afield.

At the end of the program we will be holding a Jump Off, an event to celebrate and culminate the Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart program. This will be held on Friday 14 June. The Jump Off day is a great opportunity for you to witness how much fun skipping can be, come along and pick up a rope! Let your Homeroom teacher know when your child(ren) has finished fundraising online. You may like to print out a copy of the donations received online. Thank you for joining us in the fight against heart disease. Cassandra Hobbs Jump Rope for Heart School Coordinator
