Dear MembersThe YearThe time of the year has arrived when I would like to wish all members the compliments of the season.
I would like to acknowledge the strong support the club has received this year from the University, this will allow forthe continued improvement of facilities to members. Your committee and management have remained diligent insearching for a club room type facility, in particular south of Grattan Street. We have been strongly supported by theUniversity in trying to find suitable premises in a very restricted market.
Finances of the club this year have remained very strong and we look forward to reporting a very successful year. This has allowed for the refurbishment of the bar, kitchen and planned refurbishment of the Main Lounge. TheLounge project in conjunction with the University is scheduled for next year. The refurbishment including retainingthe very popular bay window areas is planned to blend with the replacement of the Main Dining Room WindowWalls.
Membership IssuesThe issue of a retired member’s category has occupied the General Committee on a number of occasions. Account has been taken of circumstances of age, mobility, relative wealth, distance from the club and frequency of use.University House is primarily a staff club and as such the Committee decided that is it was not consistent to provideconcessional subscriptions other than for life members and members of 50 years standing. This means that the policyof your General Committee is not to offer special rates for members who have retired from the University, other thanon grounds of financial hardship. Retired members of staff are very welcome to continue their membership.
I offer season’s greetings to all members and their families and every good wish for 2008.Robert C Evans

Licensed Bar"What I love about the new bar"by John Macaulay:
The wine cabinets — correct temperature controls now provide excellentchilled conditions for the whites and maintain ideal humidity and servingtemperature for the reds.
Under-bench glass storage allows for more open service areas — there isnow an excellent feeling of space. Draught beer and beer glass chiller —conveniently repositioned in the bar.
The new beer system now delivers fresh draught beer in ideal conditioncomplete with a simple and effective beer line cleaning system.
Heritage Window Walls to east and west of Main Dining RoomThe University is presently designing and planning the refurbishment (with similar profiles) and reinstating sliding doors to both gardens.

What is happening — garden to East of University House?Virginia and staff from University Grounds are installing a new ‘water wise’garden to the east of University House (along Professors Road). The installation is due to be completed mid November 2007. Temporaryirrigation will be used only to establish the garden, then discontinued.“The new garden will comprise a fairly simple mixed planting of both nativeand exotic species, all selected for hardiness & ornamental characteristics. The species to be used are:Larger specimen plantsBrachychiton rupestris — Bottle Tree (Aust. native)Xanthorrhoea australis — Grass Tree (Aust. native)Understorey plantsFestuca glauca — Blue Fescue (Exotic grass sp.)Euphorbia myrsinites — (Exotic perennial)Euphorbia wulfenii — (Exotic perennial)
The understory plants reflect some of the planting at Beaurepaire, across Tin Alley. The rocks are a 'mudstone' which has not used before elsewhere on the campus. Our intention is for this new garden to be an example of what can be achieved without supplementary irrigation, meaning itis something of an experiment. We will be carefully monitoring establishment of the new planting and assessing the results.I’d be interested to hear what you think of the garden after a time”.Andrew Gay Grounds Manager, Property & Campus Services Division (Asset Services)

Very few one argue with the suggestion that at their best the Pinot Noir wines from Bass Phillip are amongst Australia's finest. Burgundian at times, these wines can deliver an extraordinary breadth of complex flavours and textures. The now mature original vineyard at Leongatha South has been augmented with newer plantings, and the commitment to quality remains paramount.
