Busy Month of March

As we head into the second week of March

I want to thank local municipal leaders in

Cobourg and Port Hope who have

participated in our ‘March for Meals’

events. This is a great way to see how the

Meals on Wheels program works in local

communities. Municipal leaders are able

to travel on a route delivering meals

alongside volunteers and have a quick chat

with residents in their own homes. The

value of the meal and the social

interaction can be witnessed first hand.

We hope through this increased awareness of the Meals On Wheels program additional volunteers will be interested

in helping out and/or individuals interested in receiving meals will contact our offices. Staff and volunteers look

forward to hosting municipal leaders in Campbellford this week with Brighton, Colborne and Hastings later in the

month.

Community Care staff are busy preparing for our annual Volunteer Appreciation event in April to coincide with

National Volunteer Week. More information will be coming in the days ahead and we hope that all CCN volunteers

will be able to join us in celebrating the value and impact of volunteers.

Finally, the Board of Directors along with the Ed’s House Building Committee and Capital Campaign Committee are

anxiously awaiting the final Ministry of Health approval to begin building the Northumberland Hospice Care Centre.

On February 13th five construction tenders were received for the building of Ed’s House. All tenders and supporting

documentation have been forwarded to the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care for review and approval of the

selected contractor. Once approval is received, Community Care Northumberland will award the construction con-

tract for the 10 bed, 18,000 sq. ft. building. Construction will begin when conditions permit ‘shovels in the ground’.

Looking forward to seeing all the great Community Care activity throughout the two months!

Community Care Northumberland (CCN) began its month-long, county-wide “March for Meals” initiative in Cobourg. With this initiative, CCN is promoting the Meals on Wheels program to the public and also wants to bring awareness for the need of volunteers to assist them in the delivery of this program. During the month of March, agencies across North America like CCN are celebrating the value of the Meals on Wheels programs. This program provides access to well-balanced, affordable meals that are imperative to the independence and sustenance of isolated seniors and individuals with disabilities. Mayor John Henderson, Deputy Mayor Suzanne Seguin, Councillor Adam Bureau and Councillor Emily Chorley joined together with CCN volunteers in Cobourg on March 6th to help deliver hot meals to local Meals on Wheels clients.

In Cobourg, volunteers pick up the hot prepared Meals on Wheels insulated bags at Extendicare, located on Densmore Road and deliver them to clients on a pre-planned route during the noon hour. The pre-planned route of stops takes no longer than 1 hour. When the route is completed, the volunteers return the bags to Extendicare. Last year, with the help of local volunteers over 12,000 hot and frozen meals were delivered throughout the Cobourg area. Pictured left: Meals on Wheels volunteers Denver Santinato, Don Pirie and Grahame Richardson “I want to thank Mayor Henderson, Deputy Mayor Seguin and Councillors Bureau and Chorley from the Town of Cobourg for getting us started with their participation in this year’s March for Meals initiative. Their involvement will help us raise the profile of this program and our need for Meals on Wheels volunteers in the Cobourg area, “she added. For additional program information about Meals on Wheels visit www.commcare.ca/mow.html or to volunteer as a Meal on Wheels driver, please contact CCN’s Cobourg office at (905)372-7356 or email [email protected].
