Principal’s Report

The highlight this week has clearly been today’s Book

Week dress-ups. Celebrations of books which interest,

intrigue or capture the imagination of our young

students are always a highlight. It was wonderful to see

so many students and staff dressing up to represent

their favourite book characters.

Assistant Principal Announcements I am pleased to announce that Mrs Trudi Hallam has been appointed as Acting Assistant Principal for term four. Mrs Hallam is a highly experienced teacher who brings a range of skills to the posi-tion. She will be directly involved in student management as well as organising and planning many of the term four activities.

Parents’ Club AGM The Hopetoun P-12 College Parents’ Club held its annual general meeting last night. On behalf of the College I would like to thank outgoing President, Rexanne Marshman, for her work in the role during what has been a most difficult and very interesting year. Most of the fund raising activities have been cancelled however Rexanne ensured that the Parents Club never lost touch throughout the year and has managed to navigate the committee through these difficult times. Congratulations go to Vanessa Glare who has taken over the President’s role while Donna Horman continuing as Secretary and Mikala Roberts continues as Treasurer. The highlight of the year for the Parents’ Club was the Presentation Ball which we were fortunate enough to hold in term one just before the restrictions commenced. Thanks, again to Rexanne, and all the best to the new committee.

COVID-19 - Masks I think it is fair to say that none of us are all that comfortable wearing masks however that is the requirement for staff and secondary students. It is important for secondary students to remember that they must not leave home without a mask and they must wear the mask properly whilst travelling to and from school (unless in a car with family) and while at school.

Parent Survey There is still a little time to complete your online parent survey. Please fill in the form to provide our school with feedback on your views about our school.

School Review Our school review is currently well underway. We held a field work day on Tuesday where two

principals, a senior member of the Department and our School Council President met. They visited

classrooms and interviewed staff and students. We also held a parent focus group the day before

via Webex. Our Reviewer, Carol Every, ‘visited’ the school virtually by way of vision through an

iPad screen and through Webex. The next step in the review is for all members of the panel to

meet at school on Monday to finalise our direction and develop improvement plans for the next

four years.

Teamwork - We work together to help everyone achieve their goals.

Welcome to the Sugden family

At the beginning of the term we welcomed the Sugden family and four of their five children to our College.

Skye (Yr 11), Zoe (Yr 8), Levi (Grade 3) and Bella (Grade 2) have moved to Hopetoun from Pakenham.

Please make them feel welcome, we hope they enjoy their time at our school.

This week we read a range of books that were nominated for awards dur-ing Book Week. We read all the books in the Picture Book of the Year cat-egory, students then voted on which book they thought would win and ex-plained why they enjoyed the book.

Hello Lighthouse was my favourite book in this category because I was so interested in the story. I had never seen a lighthouse and I didn’t know that you needed to have people living in there turning the light on and off and cleaning it.

By Sophie

Three was my favourite book in this category because of the pictures.

By Aliana

I think Three will win Picture Book of the Year because there is a dog in it and he wants a home. He has to look really hard for a home and he never gives up.

By Mia

I think Nop will win because Nop was a really good book. It was about a teddy that no one wanted. In the end he made a friend.

By Bella

I think Three will win because it was about a dog with three legs that was trying to find a home to live in.

By Layne

I loved Nop because it was good. It had a live teddy bear in it.

By Nathaniel

My favourite book was The Good Son because I liked hearing about the war.

By Ned

I liked Three because the garden was pretty.

By Brianna

My favourite book was Tilly because Tilly’s treasure was always hiding in the house and she was the only person that knew. I like that the story was about a real thing that happened to the author’s sister.

By Matilda

I liked The Good Son because it had war and guns. I thought the pictures were super cool.

By George.

The winner of Picture Book of the Year 2020 was I Need a Parrot by Chris McKimmie.

School Captain Newsletter Article

Hello, my name is Harry McLean, and I am thrilled to be nominated for School Captain in 2021.

I came to Hopetoun P12 as a shy, nervous, SHORT year seven student. I believe that during my time at Hopetoun I have exhibited the school’s values; respect, responsibility and teamwork. I believe that these values and the fact that I am also approachable, happy, and have pride in the school will help me to be a great School Captain.

I went to Gnurad Gundidj Leadership Camp in 2018 and loved it. This experience really sparked my interest in leadership. I remember saying on the last day of camp, “I want to be school captain when I get to year 12”. Since then I have tried to step up whenever I could to show leadership and support others.

I love my sports and especially team sports. I have learnt a lot from my peers and experiences that I have had as a team member, team vice -captain and team captain. The importance of listening to other’s opinions, considering other people’s situation and including people are important lessons that I can bring to the role as School Captain.

2020 has been a very disruptive and weird year. We have had to change the way we attended class, struggle with computers and internet and try not to let the teachers see that we are still wearing our PJs in class. We have not been able to play our sports, see our friends and hang out at Cheryl’s to have a milk shake. Due to this I believe that the role of School Captain in 2021 will bring very unique challenges. An active, friendly inclusive School Captain can represent our school, showing how resilient we are, and how the students of Hopetoun P12 will support each other and achieve great things, despite the recent challenges we have had.

I wish all the nominated student’s good luck.

Hey everyone, I’m Krystal Hakopa a Year 11 running for School Captain in 2021. It was only last week, I thought of having a go of running for school captain and I believe it will be a great experience for me. It is something new and I am willing to take on what the role entails, as becoming school captain will be a great end to 13 years of schooling.

This role does come with many responsibilities that I believe I am capable of doing. Throughout the 7 years I have been at Hopetoun P-12, I have been offered a variety of opportunities to learn and develop leadership skills, which has equipped me with the qualities and skills a captain needs.

Being a part of SRC and attending school for student leadership at Gnurad has taught me the necessary skills and the important parts of leadership. A leader is someone who inspires and supports others and always there to listen, and this is what I aim to do. Plus, I will encourage participation, so everyone is involved.

Some of the qualities that I will bring is being approachable, respectful, responsible, and having an open mind towards new ideas that will help improve our school to be better. I am willing to work with others to make these changes happen, as teamwork plays a key part in the role working with both students and staff. Plus, it is also important to represent both yourself and school in a positive way. With the experiences I have had, seeing other leaders, and watching past captains fulfil the role has given me a bit of an insight to what I will expect from being school captain for 2021.

Good luck to the other candidates.

School Captain Article

My name is Brooklyn Hallam and I'm a year 11 student from Warracknabeal. My interests in-

clude sports and catching up with my mates.

If I was to take on the role of being your School Captain I believe I could bring many things to

the table including my experience in different leadership roles through captaining and coach-

ing different sports in the past, as well as being a part of student representative councils

throughout my previous years of schooling and working alongside various school captains.

I feel as though I’m a fairly hardworking and honest person and would reflect the school values

well. Transferring from another school I feel as though I could bring some fresh ideas to keep

Hopetoun P-12 improving and I hope to represent Hopetoun P‐12 in the future.

Hello everyone, my name is Kate Watts and I would like to be your 2021 School Captain.

I had lived in Melbourne for most of my life but managed to move to Hopetoun twice, I moved here for the second time in 2019.

I would like to be your school captain for the following reasons.

I would like to represent the school through the community.

I would like to be someone the students can relate to and rely on.

I would like to help students be motivated and proactive around the school.

Some of the current things I do for our community are helping out on the show committee, being a part of the fire brigade and having multiple jobs around the town helping out locals.

To help the students be motivated and proactive I would like to get to know the students by finding out their likes and what they enjoy doing inside and outside school.

I feel as if I’d make a good School Captain as I set a good example to the students, I follow all school rules and responsibilities of a senior student. I have a very good attendance and am rarely away from school so therefore I will be consistent and reliable with my duties and responsibilities of being a school captain.

I am comfortable talking to people in a crowd and taking charge of situations where needed. I feel as though if you vote for me, we can make the school an enjoyable and fun place to be for students and teachers

So vote for me, Kate Watts, for a positive goal achieving 2021!
