STUDENTS TAKE ACTION! Year 2 students, Zali and Polly came up with the idea to have a Second Hand Stall to raise money for DROUGHT RELIEF —’Hampers & Hay for Hope’.
On the last day of Term 3, the students from Mrs Nicholls’ Class bought in books and toys and sold them before school and at recess. They also donated the ‘bags of coins’ that each student in their class used for their Maths lessons. They raised OVER $250.00
Well done Year 2s — that’s a FANTASTIC EFFORT!
GERMANY DAY On the last Friday of Term 3, the Primary school community enjoyed the cultural celebration of Germany Day.
Many students dressed in either national German costume or the Flag colours. Yummy pretzels supplied by Lobethal Bakery and lunch time games run by the SRC were popular features for the day.
Leona and Elliot Stewart helped Frau Clifford to lead the Assembly. We had a special re visit from Reinhard Struve from the Bavarian dance group "Bund der Bayern" as well. Reinhard explained some German culture and traditions. The students enjoyed his “hoo-haas”, whip-cracking and energetic dancing. Even Mr Fielke had a go at whip cracking – it’s harder than it looks! Frau Clifford
THANK YOU Frau Clifford,
Mr Harrison,
The SRC,
the Stewart Family & Reinhard Struve.

At Kuitpo Forest, I learnt to face my fears. When we first started mountain biking I was nervous but I surprised myself. I tried my hardest and it paid off. It was a lot easier than I thought and I had SO MUCH FUN! My favourite part was going down all of the hills, plus the view was beautiful! Bella
I enjoyed being able to take a peaceful walk during orienteering, even if we got lost. Kristopher
My favourite activity was mountain biking because it was challenging going up the hills, but on the other side, the hard work was worth it because you got to soar down the other side with the wind in your hair. Lottie

It’s all about teamwork and leadership skills during the Year 7 Kuitpo Forest Adventure Day. Our day of adventure in Kuitpo Forest provided an opportunity for students to explore and practice a whole range of social skills and capabilities with leadership at the top of the list.
During discussions in class, we have investigated what it means to be a good leader and how leaders help the people around them to be the best that they can be. An enjoyable day full of challenges, laughter and plenty of memories. Sue Gillespie (Year 7 Educator)

Chemistry in the Real World!
Late last term, the Year 11 Chemistry class was joined by students from Temple Christian College and spent a morning visiting the Brukunga Mine Site. Mr John Mignone, an education officer from the Department of Energy and Mining, gave us an informative and extensive tour of the site.
Students learnt about how open cut mining was used to mine pyrites (iron sulphide) but after it was shut down, it was discovered that acid drainage from the left over rock-piles was contaminating the local waterways and impacting the health of sheep drinking from the water. The students were able to see first hand, the ways that the acid-base chemistry they have recently been studying, has been used by scientists to solve this problem.
Students were able to take measurements of acid levels at different points around the mine and are now working on an infographic that is focusing on the way that science is a human endeavour.
This is an outstanding local opportunity for students to investigate as the impact of the Brukunga experience has had far reaching impact even on the legislation surrounding mining leases and
permissions. Mrs Willsmore (Secondary Educator)
Visiting Brukunga was an amazing experience as we were able to see how humans unknowingly had such a major impact on the area. It was awesome to see how much effort has been made by the South Australian Government to reverse the effect of the water acidity. Lauren
It was interesting to learn about how drastic the difference in pH was, in different locations around Brukunga Mine. It was intriguing to find out that sheep south of the mine were getting urinary tract infections because of the acidity of the water. Caitlin
Challenging Chemistry Investigations
As a part of the Year 12 Chemistry course, students are required to design their own chemistry experiment. This year we have had some interesting investigations.
One student investigated the effect that cooking food has on nutrient content, which involved boiling soya beans for a range of time intervals, and then using technology such as atomic absorption machines to measure the resultant iron content of the cooking water.
Another student designed an experiment to measure the effect of pH on the leaching of metal ions from soil collected locally.
Mrs Willsmore (Secondary Educator)
Games Club
During Term 3, a number of Secondary students have joined Mrs Willsmore, Mr Schuurmans and Mr Lloyd to play strategy games to have fun and to develop their problem solving skills.

Year 12 ‘De-stress Packs’
On Monday, a representative from the Adelaide Hills Council Youth Advisory Board presented our School Captains with “de-stress” packs for each year 12 student, filled with goodies such as chocolate, colouring books and pencils, stress balls, bubble wrap and tea bags.
Year 8 Design & Tech
Year 8s began building bridges last term. The unit of work investigated the shapes that make up the structures of bridges and the students identified different types of bridges.
After some investigation and use of a computer generated program, the students identified the stresses that bridges undergo.
The students were then asked to draw a scale drawing of a bridge with the brief: construct a bridge that spans 650mm using 200 popsticks and timber glue. The bridges are currently under construction with an anticipated completion time being Term 4 Week 2 when the bridges will be tested for strength and the pressure exerted recorded until failure.

Year 9 Design & Tech
The Year 9 class designed and built CO2 dragsters in Design and Technology. Each student built a car, through investigation, to compete in a final race off with high stakes as a prize for the winning car.
Each car raced over a distance of 20 metres and the times were taken for every pass. The car with the lowest average time was the winner. The cars completed the distance in times of just over a second.
The race day was highly competitive and held in the Gym at Verdun. The Year 4 and 6 students were fortunate enough to watch the races and were very impressed with the design and
speed of the cars. Stuart Cox (Secondary Educator)
We hope all these people enjoy their birthdays THIS WEEK: Alekos Aslanidis, Connor Calliss, Joshua Clifford, Samuel Clifford, Hope Eden Tyson Eden, Caden Frahn, Sophie Kuhlmann, Amelia Male, Ezekiel Mohor, Gabe Potts, Bethany Schultz and Emma Queale.
