RECTOR’S MESSAGE ‘Progress lies not in enhancing what is, but in advancing toward what will be.’1 We’ve definitely advanced toward ‘what will be’ in Term 1. The Arts

Pipe Band Success On Thursday 8 March, students Rory MacLeod, William McArthur and Ethan Tyree travelled to Rotorua to compete in the New Zealand and National South Pacific Highland Pipe Band Championships, competing among nearly 50 other bands from across New Zealand and the South Pacific. The boys competed in the South Canterbury Grade 4 and Grade2 bands; on the 9th of March the Grade 4 band managed to place an overall 3rd out of 13 bands in the grade and picked up a 2nd place in the street march event. On Saturday, the Grade 2 band was awarded 4th overall with 1st in the Drumming in the medley event. The boys competed extremely well considering they were still mourning the loss of their good friend and fellow superstar drummer George Hill, who had passed away less than a week before the competition.

Seussical Kids and Hairspray Come along to the upcoming South Canterbury Drama League Juniors double billing production of ‘Seussical Kids and Hairspray Jnr’, and see our talented students (pictured right) Caleb Cameron and Cole Whitnack in action on stage at the Theatre Royal Timaru from 12- 14 April. They have been rehearsing all term and are ready to blow you away with their talent on stage. Caleb stars as the famous Corny Collins in Hairspray Jnr in what is now his 6th and final show for the Junior section of the SCDL.

Swim School The 2018 Swim School had the largest turn out ever with 10-15 boys from Years 9 to 11 showing up regularly on Tuesdays and Thursdays lunch times. This increase in numbers is due to swim school being more actively promoted around the school. The instructors encouraged all students to come Tuesday and Thursday lunch times and to give it a go. This was done through PE teachers, class notices and posters around the school. The Instructors were Riley Taylor (Year 13), Reed Stevenson (Year 13), Jack Sands (Year 12) and Will Tudgey (Year 10) who are all national level swimmers.

At the beginning of the lessons, the boys were asked about what they wished to gain from swim school, whether it be improvement on current skills, or how to swim in general. Most of the boys’ answers were around the development of speed, as most boys wished to get faster for their Year 9 or 10 PE Challenge which includes running and swimming. Some of the boys were also working on the Year 12 PE Aquathon assessment. Another answer to this question was to improve survival sculling. Survival sculling is essentially staying afloat upright so their head is out of the water and they are able to breathe easily. They do this for 6-10 minutes in the diving well to represent how to survive in deep water such as the ocean or large lakes.

Coaching will be continuing next year, as Jack Sands and William Tudgey have already volunteered to continue swim school throughout their future schooling. This will hopefully lead to future development with students that still wish to increase their skills. Through all of this training, all of the students who have attended are now able to swim a length of efficient freestyle in the 33m Timaru Boys’ High School pool without touching the bottom or stopping for a period of time. This made swim school in 2018 a very successful activity for the swimmers as the goal was to simply improve their confidence, skills and knowledge.

Year 13 Agricultural Science and Chemistry Field Trip

On 27-28 of March, 32 Year 13 students from Agricultural Science and Chemistry were involved in a field trip to survey the quality of the Pareora River. Debbie Eddington from ECAN taught the students how to assess water quality and organised many speakers to talk to the boys about their involvement with the river and farming in the area. Boys stayed overnight at Lindisfarne and listened to speakers from ECAN, DairyNZ, and Shrimpton’s farm. Students collected data for their extended investigation assessments by sampling the water at the river for temperature, pH, nitrate and phosphate levels, water flow, invertebrates and the condition of the area surrounding the river. We were lucky to have good weather for the duration of the field trip.

SISS MotoCross Held in Gore on 7 April, the South Island Secondary Schools Motocross Championships saw six of our young men travel down on the Friday to compete in conditions that were extremely muddy, with the area having experienced ½ inch of rain before the event. Tom Waldron (pictured left) and Jonty Collins were the top performing riders of our team, with Tom finishing 4th in the 16-19 year old competitive class, and Jonty finishing 6th in the 12-15 year old competition class. Sam Milne, Toby Porter, Finn Kerr and Bailey Kingsbury all rode well and enjoyed their two days of competition.

Thomas House Redevelopment Exciting Update!!

The Thomas House new accommodation build is set to commence during the holidays following Ministry of Education approval. The Ministry of Education decision is the culmination of five years of discussion, planning and many volunteer hours given by current and past development committee members.

As this is a self-funded project with no financial support from the Ministry of Education the new build will be 100% owned by The Board of Trustees. The Board acknowledges the supportive Hostel Community – past and present and the wider school community whose financial support given to the project so far has ensured that a new and improved Hostel facility can be built. The Project Managers for the build are Logic Group, with David McBride providing Architect Services. Following a tendering process, Timaru Construction was the successful applicant. This is certainly exciting times for not only Thomas House but the whole school. To be able to future-proof the Hostel by up-grading hostel accommodation will ensure that the Hostel will remain strong which in turn contributes positively to the school roll and character at Timaru Boys’. For further information or details on how to contribute to this project please contact:

Colin Murdoch, Chairperson Thomas House Redevelopment Committee Phone: 0274 732 635 / Email [email protected] Or the Rector, Nick McIvor

From the Board of Trustees………..

Change of Board Chair At the last Board of Trustees meeting held on 28 March, Virginia Callaghan stepped aside from her role as Chair of the Board. Virginia was elected to the Board in 2013 and has been a respected Chair of the Board for the past two years. In her time on the Board, Virginia has given many hours of service, ensuring the Board has remained a cohesive team whilst driving for positive change in the school. We value her input and are grateful that Virginia has agreed to remain on the Board and will continue to work alongside the Thomas House Redevelopment team as they oversee the completion of the new accommodation building at Thomas House. The Board welcomes Peter Stayt as the new Chairperson of the Board and look forward to his leadership over 2018.

Expressions of Interest Sought… In anticipation of the Board of Trustees Election to be held in 2019, the current Board of Trustees are seeking expressions of interest from parents who may be interested in exploring the possibility of joining their ranks. Board members are mindful of having a broad range of skillsets available as they aim to operate in the best interests of the school. If you think you may be interested, please contact the Chair, Peter Stayt, through the Board Secretary by phoning Carolyn Bunting on 687 7560 or by emailing [email protected]. All communications will be kept in the strictest confidence.

Role of the Board The board has the overall responsibility for the school. The Education Act says that the board's most important responsibility is for student achievement. To achieve this, the board is also legally responsible for the curriculum (what is taught), property, personnel, finance and health and safety. This means that the board is responsible for making sure that all students are getting a high quality education that will prepare them to survive and thrive in the world by the time they leave school. Being able to show that your school or kura is doing this well is what they mean when they talk about "progress and achievement". It is responsible for being able to show to its parents and community and to the government that students are being well prepared for life beyond school. The process of being able to provide evidence to show how well they are doing things is what schools and kura mean when they talk about "accountability". The board must be able to provide leadership for its local community and its principal and staff. At the same time, the board is elected by the community to ensure that the community has a voice in how their school operates. An effective board needs to be able to balance these two responsibilities. The board is also responsible for acting as a good employer to all the staff in the school or kura.

From the School Office……………

School Donations A request for the school donation has been added to next month’s student accounts. The following amounts have been set by the Board of Trustees for 2018:

$170 (1 student), $265 (2 students) and $335 (3 students or more) with a $12 donation to the PTA

We are most grateful for the very positive response from families to payment of this donation. In 2017 we received a generous $ 62,039.25 from the school community. The donation is used to support a wide range of activities for the boys including learning support, cultural visiting groups, school magazine, sport and arts activities to name but a few. If you have any queries regarding this donation, please phone Lynda Robinson on 687 7560 ext 705. NB: The government’s previous indication that they would contribute a $150 school donation per pupil has not yet been implemented.

Unavailability of School Jackets XCM Group are suppliers of our school jackets. Unfortunately, there has been an issue with the overseas factory who makes these jackets. With the closure of the factory, there has been uncertainty over the supply of jackets. However, going forward, the factory is now up and running again with new owners. XCM apologise unreservedly for the delay but this has been out of their control. They are doing everything possible to make sure the product is delivered as soon as possible. The school will notify parents as soon as these jackets arrive in the school via the school notices and an email. NB: Non-regulation jackets are able to be worn to and from school until this matter is resolved

National Secondary Schools’ Tennis Finals The Timaru Boys’ High School tennis team of James Watt, Josh Cameron, George McAleer, Matt Ellis and Connor Crotty earned the respect of their opposition teams at the National Secondary Schools’ Tennis Finals held in Christchurch this week with competitive matches and several upset wins. Facing the premier number one seeds Wellington College on Day One was always going to be a big ask. TBHS faced the challenge and put up a good show. It was George McAleer who produced the match highlight winning the only match in the tie against Daniel Fleming, a much higher ranked player. McAleer won 6-4 6-0. James Watt’s match

against in form, top NZ junior player Isaac Beecroft was a close encounter, however it was Beecroft who nailed the crucial points to take the win. Close matches were the order of the day in the tie against fourth seeds Tauranga Boys. Watt, playing at number one, had a 3 setter on his hands but couldn’t quite close out the third going down 4-6 to Caelan Potts. Going into the doubles 4-0 down in the singles matches, it was the bottom doubles pairing of McAleer and Matt Ellis that gave TBHS its only win in the tie. Next up, TBHS met Westlake Boys and this tie proved to be full of emotion and was the closest tie of the week for TBHS. Again McAleer produced an upset win which didn’t please his opponent and Josh Cameron came back from a set and 0-4 down to turn the match around to a win and sealing two crucial match wins in the singles. Watt’s match against Chris Zang went to the wire in a thrilling battle with Zang taking it 7-6, 7-6. So it was two a piece going into the doubles. The top doubles pairing of Watt and Cameron netted a win and the bottoms double pairing bowed out on a set tie break in the second. The result was a draw. However, Westlake won on a set countback and edged their way into the top four play-off. TBHS, ranked 7th going into the finals, were now playing off for positions 5-8 alongside Tauranga Boys, Hamilton Boys and Palmerston North. Having already met Tauranga in pool play, Hamilton Boys’ were our next opponents on Day three. The tie was a mixed bag with Hamilton Boys’ taking out the singles matches and TBHS winning both the doubles. Unfortunately, Day four was washed out. TBHS didn’t get to play off against Palmerston Boys’ so share the seventh/eighth position. In their debut at this prestigious national secondary school tennis event, the team from Timaru Boys’ High School showed they were worthy of making it through to this level. The boys displayed good character and sportsmanship and represented both their school and the South Island Secondary Schools in a positive light, pleasing both their Coach Rachel Ellis and Team Manager, Jane Sullivan.

Aoraki Golf Croquet Championships On Wednesday 21 March, the annual Aoraki Golf Croquet Championship took place with Timaru Boys’ High School entering five pairs into the B grade competition. The majority of the ten boys had never played the game before, but with the help of a half hour tutorial, a three minute you tube video, and the experience of James Martin, the teams were in a confident mood. The competition was split into two draws. Unfortunately as play was about to begin, rain fell meaning that the first four games were restricted to 30 minutes each. After that, games were 40 minutes or longer as in the case of the final rounds. To their own surprise, and the surprise of many, Reed Stevenson and Ben Hargreaves won all of their pool games, just beating our own top seeds, Alexander Doyle and James Martin, who finished second in the pool winning all of their games except for the one against Reed and Ben. On the other side of the draw, Adam McEwan and Thornton Hellewell finished second in their pool after some nice play from a pair with little experience.

For up-to-date news on school events www.timaruboys.school.nz

In the finals, Reed and Ben faced the experienced Waitaki Boys’ High School pair who train twice a week and have played together for just over a year. After a slow start, TBHS came back at the WBHS boys but it was too little too late, and Reed and Ben finished second overall. Overall the results were outstanding from an inexperienced team. Alexander and James finished third overall, with Adam and Thornton coming fourth. The other members of the team, Brett Meyer and Ned Milne finished 7th, and Ben Schikker and Harry Delaney 9th out of the twelve teams. It was great to see so many boys giving a new sport a try and playing with enthusiasm and good sportsmanship.

South Island SS Athletics The South Island SS Athletics was held in Timaru on the 23rd to the 25th of March. The weather was cold but was ideal for Athletes to gain personal best performances. TBHS had 35 Athletes which were selected from the Aoraki sports but only 33 competed in the South Island Athletics. The team consisted of a mixture of seniors as well as juniors. This year TBHS had all four 4x100m relay teams qualify for the South Islands but only three teams competed, as the Under 19 had to be scratched because of an athlete who was injured while competing on the Saturday. We also entered two 4x400m relay teams an under 16 and an under 19 team. Both teams finished in the top 6. All 4x100m relay teams made the finals and the Under 14 were placed 3rd. Our results were the best we have had in a very long time. The results for all Athletes who were placed in the top three were:

Jackson Ross 3rd U14 Discus Shannon Drake 3rd U15 High Jump Quinn Motley 3rd U15 Discus William Valentine 3rd U19 Discus Dean Andrews 3rd U19 Javelin Liam Johnston 2nd U19 Hammer William Rawlins 2nd U16 300m Hurdles Ryan Bagrie 2nd U15 1500m and 3rd in the 800m

Ben Sewell 2nd U9 Hurdles, 2nd Long Jump and 2nd High Jump George Guerin 1st Open Steeple Chase Bailey Gebbie 1st U19 Triple Jump Taiyo Watanabe 1st U19 Javelin and 3rd Shotput Thomas Valentine 1st U19 Hammer with a throw of 58.38m, a new record smashing the old record by more than 6m. The U14 Relay 4x100 won 3rd

Most of the Athletes achieved personal bests with a lot of them in the top 8 placing or making the finals. Athletes who represented TBHS at the South Islands have shown that they have the ability and the potential to be very competitive at the Nationals at the end of the year. The Nationals are held in December in Dunedin.

International Water-skiing Success Congratulations to Will Gibson (pictured left) who came first in the Junior Boys’ Jump section at the 2018 Moomba Masters in Melbourne last month. Claiming distances of 47.2 and 48m during his two rounds, Will successfully competed against 11 water-skiers from Australia and Argentina in the jump section. Will is aiming now to be selected for the 2018 Junior World Championships, to be held in Spain in August – we wish him well for his inclusion in this team.

Lower South Island Teams’ Sailing Regatta

The TBHS Sailing team competed at the Lower South Island Teams' Racing Regatta at Lake Hood on the 7th and 8th of April. They were competing against eight other schools from Nelson to Otago and came second overall. The team of Bryn Houghton (Captain) Nico Evans, Nathan Harbutt, Thomas Corbett, Nicos Shearer and Rainer Wilcock sailed well and learnt a lot about team racing tactics over the weekend. We were also awarded the Southern District Teams Racing Trophy for the top team in the lower South Island, beating the Mt Aspiring College and Otago Girls’ teams.

Conferencing

Whole school conferencing will take place on Friday 4th May. On that day all students will meet with their conferencing teacher, who is their form teacher, for 15 minutes with their parents or caregivers. Students only need to come in for their conferencing time. Times will be sent out.

Conferencing reports will be sent home to parents in the next week.

Senior Examinations

These take place in Term Two Week Four, Wednesday May 23rd –Friday May 25th. All students with examination based subjects will have examinations on these days. 11BN will remain at school on those days.

Vehicle Permission (Senior School) A reminder that senior students, Year 12 and 13 (Year 11 may bring a moped or similar), must have completed a vehicle permission form before they bring a vehicle to school. These forms are available from the Student Support Office. Passengers are only allowed to be transported if the appropriate documentation has been completed.

BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) Our aim is to have all Year 9 students by the start of Term 2 this year with a device. Why are we doing this? We want to enhance lessons to make great learning even greater with a blending of digital with long-valued teaching and learning techniques. We

believe that an internet capable device is now an important part of a boy’s modern learning toolkit. It gives them instant access to unlimited resources and enables them to support, extend, communicate and share their learning in ways that prepares them for the future. Currently we have over 75 Year 9 boys indicating they have a device they can bring to school. All Year 9 students have had an IT induction programme in their first week and Mr Burke (IT support) is visiting English classes supporting their connection to the school system. Mr Burke is providing IT support for any student in the second half of lunchtime each day.
