Broccoli Parmesan Fritters 3 cups fresh broccoli florets 1 large egg ½ cup plain flour ⅓ cup parmesan cheese, finely grated ½ tsp salt black pepper Olive or vegetable oil for frying

Steam or microwave broccoli until al dente, set it aside to cool slightly. Lightly beat egg, add flour, cheese, salt & pepper. Add broccoli & mash gently until broken down to around 5mm (fritter height) but not too mushed. Heat oil in frying pan over moderate heat. Spoon pikelet sized quantities of mixture into pan & flatten slightly so broccoli is coated with batter. Repeat with additional batter, not crowding the pan. Cook until browned, about 2 to 3 minutes on each side. Drain. Serving suggestion: Top with garlicky lemon yogurt: 1 cup plain yogurt, 2 tbsp lemon juice, small minced clove of garlic, lemon zest & salt. Combine ingredients well.

FOWL PLAY? It is already gearing up to be a great year in the Poultry Section of the Canowindra Show. This is the third year Kerrie Smith is Steward, "I have been blessed to have so many locals take to the reopening of the Section with such enthusiasm. "Every time we put the Schedules out, we are surprised at the response we get in a short time." The pens fill quickly and past years have seen an exceptional amount of quality fowl on display. This year the standard of Poultry promises to be of ‘Royal Quality’. The standard of local poultry has improved so much over the years, going from the backyard exhibitor that may have had only one Show in mind, to people who now pay hundreds of dollars for breeding stock. These improve-ments have created a business of breeding and selling top quality birds for the Australian and international markets thanks to the internet. A new Schedule has been developed to encompass more modern, relevant breeds as the old Schedule was very outdated. This year the Pet Chook Section will be housed at the front of the poultry shed and all exhibitors for the Section are asked to bring their own cage that is appropriate for the size of the chook. The public will be asked to get involved in this fun category and vote for their favourite Pet Chook. The prize for the most popular Pet Chook will awarded at the end of the day. "I would like to thank the Show Society for the support last year in installing new lights in the shed as they were long overdue," said Kerrie. "Exhibitors will be coming from near and far, some coming from as far as Leeton. So come in on Show Day and check out how good the standard of birds are these days."

VIEWS OF OUR FUTURE On Tuesday 25 June Tim Wythes, Mataihau Ahmat and Cormac Lamond, students from Canowindra High School attended the Cabonne Council Youth Forum to table issues that were concerning the youth and town-ships of Canowindra and Cargo. Every year Cabonne Council invites the schools of its electorate to voice any issues that Council can address to improve their towns. Issues tabled from various schools were wide ranging, from improved speed limit signage to improvements for sporting facilities. To gain insight in to what Canowindra High School students saw as prominent issues, the SRC canvassed their consorts and compiled a list of ideas. The SRC senior team decided to focus on the ongoing improvements at the Sports Trust Oval particularly The Skate Park precinct. The Canowindra students asked Council to install a drinking station within the Sports trust Oval grounds, as this would be well utilised by all users of the oval. It was also suggested that this could be incorporated into a barbecue area, established around the current shelter, to provide an opportunity for families and sporting clubs to make full use of the facility. This would also to protect the drinking station from potential vandalism, as it was felt that the drinking station installed in Morris Park was too far away for those users to access. Another focus was Memorial Park, where the students alerted council to the broken lock in the playground which poses serious safety risks and also an awareness of the graffiti that is emblazoned on some of the equipment. The last issue concerned the town of Cargo where council was informed of the rather wet and uncomfortable wait Cargo students have to endure when waiting for the bus on a cold and rainy morning. This is due to a leaking roof and an open port on the side of the shelter which causes the seats to become wet.

Canowindra held by bushrangers Superintendent Chatfield came to Canowindra on 6 October (1863) with a party of three troopers. He had no positive orders except to be on the alert for the bushrangers. He considered his resources far too weak and asked for reinforcements. These were eventually promised him by M'Lerie. Chatfield stayed camped in the Canowindra area till 10 October, in heavy and contact rain for forty-eight hours. Then, as there was no new of the bushrangers being in the vicinity, he returned to Cowra. He intended going back towards Canowindra on Tuesday 13 October but the rain continued. When he knew on the Wednesday that the Belubula River was flooded and he could not cross it to Canowindra he decided to remain another day in Cowra. This was his explanation when accused of having deserted his post at the very moment of the bushrangers' second raid.13 On Sunday 11 October, at about 8pm, the five members of the gang rode into Canowindra. Hall and Gilbert immediately took possession of Robinson's hotel and bailed up the landlord and those in the house. They searched the premises for money and took any notes they found but left all the silver. Their haul was about three pounds. After the search Vane, O'Meally and Burke came into the house and Gilbert stood drinks for all who were there. Then Hall and Vane, on one horse, rode across the river to Daly's public house on the south bank, leaving the other three at Robinson's. Hall and Vane returned at one o'clock in the morning and shortly afterwards they all rode off. A few hours later they returned and told Robinson they intended to take the town and hold up everybody.

Now is the time for sporting bodies, community groups, schools, businesses, vintage cars, trucks, tractors and buses to get involved in one of the biggest historical events, not only of our town, but of Australian history and folklore. Many descendants of the bushrangers will be visiting our village and there will be many stories and anecdotes shared, so get involved and celebrate one of the chapters that has contributed to our unique Canowindra story. For more information or to express your interest in participating in the street parade to be held Saturday 12 October, please forward your name to either Graham Rice, Trudi Weyman, Jan Harrison, David Cullane or Jenny Weaver.

TIGERS VS EAGLES A strong rivalry has long existed between Canowindra and Eugowra, and Sunday foot-ball is no exception. League Tag started the day with the Tigers scoring and converting twice in the first five minutes. Both teams defended strong and the standard soon picked up. The Geagles were able to cross once before half time sending the girls to the break 24-6 Canowindra’s way. Both teams come out keen for the second half, tempers at times rising. Final score 42-14 Tigresses way. Try scorers were Madi Vitnell 2, Sally McLean 2, Kathy Davis, Jess Fisher and Kristy White 1 and converted all 7 for the day. 3, 2, 1 went to Sally McLean, Madi Vitnell and Sarah Cummings and players player was awarded to Janelle Zahra. The Tigers knew it wouldn’t be an easy game and they came out strong from the beginning. Points were hard to come by in the first half with Tom Roth the only Tiger to cross before the break. Fortunately Rob wore his lucky socks on the day and was able to convert, 6-4 Canowindra way at half time. Hard hits were the order of the day with both teams receiving and delivery brutal tackles. The second half was anyone’s game as Canowindra closed the gap steadily. Careless play and a disallowed try in the last 10 minutes meant the Eagles took the lead. It was great to see work horses Lach-lan Watson, Moe Birmingham and Stuart Scott back after injury, and to welcome newcomer Scott Gill. Scott had an excellent first game with the Tigers, scoring of an intercept and tackling well throughout the game. Aaron Earsman worked consistently from dummy and was reliable in defence, Blocka Woolley constantly made good ground and it’s great to see Brett Traves still taking the field for the Tigers. Final score 28-18. Try scorers ere Tom Roth, Nick Willson and Scott Gill and Rob was able to convert 3 from 3. 3 points to Blocka Wooley,2 to Nick Willson, 1 to Tim Holley and players player Blocka. Next week the Tigers are at home again, all three grades, against Condobolin. This will be a must see round of footy and we hope that everyone can come and support the Tigers and Tigresses. NB: Past players day is Saturday 10 August. Round 13 Results Firsts: Cargo 66 def Gooloogong 12; Eugowra 28 def Canowindra 18; Peak Hill 90 def Grenfell 12; Trundle 24 def Condobolin 20; Molong bye. JUNIOR LEAGUE Canowindra Junior League travelled to sunny West Wyalong so the 8s, 10s and 12s could contest a win against the Bears. The Chris Williams Rural Supplies under 8s started slow letting West Wyalong in for two quick tries before Bailey Kennedy crossed to put the tigers first points on the board. Cameron Wheeler converted making the score 6-10. Sonny Bevan crossed for the teams second and last try allowing the score to be levelled. West Wyalong were able to get 10 more points, final score 20-10. Under 10s was a similar story with West Wyalong racking up 20 points to Canowindra’s 8. Eli Reid and Jack De Freitas try scorers for the match. Under 16s were in Eugowra playing their fourth match against Red Bend. The boys pulled together and put in 100% effort.
