Kivo-EBiz WiNS THE NATioNAL MARKET ToWNS AWARD

Following their success in winning the regional Market Town Award for yorkshire & Humber, Kivo-ebiz volunteers were invited to the National Award Ceremony together with all the other regional winners from around the country.

Steph Hryschko, volunteer Manager of the Kivo-ebiz project said “it is a fantastic honour to receive this National Award and thanks should go to all the great volunteers that give up their free time to help with the project. Since the announcement of the award we have been invited to venues all over the country to roll out the idea to other community and voluntary groups, such as Child Care groups, Housing Associations, Women’s clubs etc. This is bringing in further consultation income for the project.

People are better off selling goods through the charity even if they know how to trade on e-bay themselves. Although they will pay 20% of the final selling price to the charity, e-bay statistics show that charities selling on e-bay get more than 20% higher prices than individual sellers. This means you get the best possible price for your item, someone else does all the packaging work for you and you also benefit a charity in your own community. Everyone’s a winner!”

THE SEW-N-SEW’S

We are a friendly needlework group who meet on Monday night in the New village Hall at 7.30pm. We are currently sewing five sided boxes to celebrate our fifth anniversary which was on September 1st

- how time flies when you’re having fun!!!!

We have varied interests and normally work on our own pieces, ranging from knitting, patchwork, cross-stitch, tapestry, embroidery, crochet, tatting, hardanger work - the list goes on and on..... and every now and then we work on a group project.

We visited Bluebell Wood Hospice, prior to its opening, handing

in a selection of book bags, knitted blankets and a ‘piece as you go’ we made for the children.

Some members knitted a selection of bonnets, cardigans and incubator blankets for Wye Needlecrafts campaign for premature baby units in local hospitals. Also many scarves, hats and mittens have been knitted for the Christmas Shoebox Appeal.

New members are always welcome – just dig out one of those un-started/finished projects and come along and join in one Monday evening. There is a nominal charge of £1.50 per week to cover room-hire and refreshments – you only pay for the weeks you come. Hope to meet you soon......Clara

Redroad Music and Aston Fire Service hosted an 11 to 16 year olds 5 a side football tournament on 11th october 2008 at the old Colliery offices pitches in Kiveton Park. Four teams entered each trying to win the ‘winners’ trophy. The teams included young people from Kiveton Park, Harthill, Aston and Treeton.

All four teams were put into a league and the games came thick and fast as both girls and boys were put to the test in some energetic 15 minute games. it was obvious from the moment the groups came together that some teams were taking it more seriously than others both in terms of their squad size and the quality of their kits. Things even got a little heated towards the end as testosterone levels rose over the ‘safe limit’, but no one needed to be sent for an early bath!

Harthill arguably were the out right winners even though the final game was refereed by a worker from Harthill. First and second place received trophies and all the young people who took part received a medal.

The great day ended with a buffet in the colliery offices and a few team building exercises that is ‘spot the taxi’ and ‘finding your quiche’ or these games may be known by most as a good old

‘food fight’ which is of course is seen as collective behaviour!

A big thank you to the Trust for providing the teams with the space and facilities. Also thanks to staff from Rotherham young People’s Services for supporting young people to attend the tournament. When I joined Family History on the Computer in September 2007, I really

didn’t know what to expect.

I have only one cousin who lives in the North West so I knew I wasn’t going to find it easy. The only thing I knew were my immediate familys’ names.

I have now traced my Father’s side of the family back to 1500, thanks to a very, distant relative who I was lucky enough to find. As for my Mother’s side, this is well on the way to being traced back to 1674.

The class is an excellent learning and social experience and I would certainly advise anyone interested in family history to join the beginners class.

LHC Solicitors have been practicing law for over 15 years, predominantly working in the criminal and family law sectors. The original

practice was set up in 1992 by ian Giggal as a Sole Practitioner. in 1999, local Harthill resident Julia Gibbons went into partnership with ian. Julia, who has lived in Harthill with her family for over twenty years, first trained as a Barrister and cross trained in 2001 to practice as a solicitor primarily within the family law sector.

Rebecca qualified as a solicitor January 2008 and has recently made Partner at the firm. Rebecca practices both criminal and family law and looks forward to the expansion of both these areas at the new office in Kiveton.

Gary Mullis – Trainee Solicitor; Gary Mullis – Trainee Solicitor; Gary joined the firm in october, 2007 and studied law at Sheffield Hallam University before completing the Legal Practice Course at The University of Sheffield. Gary works primarily as a family law solicitor and is able to advise on divorce, children matters and injunctive proceedings. Gary also prepares wills and powers of attorney.

Daphne Kilnan – Conveyancing Manager - our conveyancing department is managed by Daphne Kilnan who has many years of experience in this field. She has worked for LHC for nearly nine years but has some 27 years experience in a conveyancing department, working for solicitors in London, Sheffield, Chesterfield and Staveley.

The first of these booklets is a history of the Christmas mumming play The owd Tup! As performed in Kiveton Park and Wales over a good few hundred years with the script and instructions for the performance. Most of the

older people on Kiveton will remember this play being taken door to door by youths or young lads or being performed by young men in the pubs or populated areas in the week running up to Christmas. This booklet should bring back some good memories for the older generation and perhaps encourage the younger generations to start performing it again!

The second booklet records the history of the Trysting Tree. This tree appears in many of the old Robin Hood Ballads and also in Sir Walters Scots novel ivanhoe. For anyone wishing to see the tree it is situated at the end of the ancient piece of woodland known as the Bluebell Wood on the Kiveton Road just before it enters Todwick. This book has been put together just in time before memories fade and facts get twisted. Both of these books would be ideal for use in local schools.

The third booklet; A History of Kiveton Park is nearly beyond description. Extracts from this letter from Dave Froggat do the job for me:

I’ve just got round to reading your History of Kiveton, and I haven’t laughed so much for ages, it is hilarious. I keep on reading and re-reading it over and over, finding new bits to make me chuckle each time.

You and I are obviously on the same wavelength when it comes to humour; taking the mickey; mixing fact and fantasy, and distorting history by investing past time with modern inventions and appliances.

I particularly liked the War if the Roses touch – the Little Rows and the Old Rows, and so many of the names reminded me of characters that I had long forgotten. Alf Bateman with his horse and cart, took me back to the war. We moved to Kiveton just before the War started, and had a couple of allotments full of potatoes. When they were ready for Harvesting, Ted happened to be on leave for the RAF and he borrowed Alf Batemans horse and cart. We lifted the crop and he drove us back to Peveril Close, wearing his uniform. Word got round that he’s been discharged from the RAF. The Kiveton Bush telegraph was certainly operative back then. Later, the telegram saying the he was missing came one morning just as Mam was going up the village – she read it and then had to go to do some alterations for the drapers and haberdashers shop. She had just crossed over the bridge when she was stopped and some one told her how sorry they were to hear the news! – To make matters worse, they went on to say at least it wasn’t too bad; after all she had three other lads at home!

Summer has been and gone and although it was not as warm and sunny, as some would have wished, the wildlife seen on Kiveton Community Woodland has been quite spectacular. Butterflies, such as the Peacock

(inachis io) and Speckled wood (Pararge aegeria), were plentiful, and Common darter (Sympetrum striolatum) dragons flitted around on warmer days. Skylarks (Alauda arvensis) “larked” over the conservation grassland at the top of the site where wildflowers such as Bird’s-foot trefoil (Lotus corniculatus) and Tufted vetch (vicia cracca) added a splash of colour.

Wildlife activity on site is now slowing down readying for winter when the conservation of energy in the face of dwindling food supplies, is paramount to survival. We all enjoy a bit of snow but i hope that the winter is not too unkind to our wildlife and that all survive until spring.

it is a pleasure to see so many local people out and about in “their” woodland and encouraging that the number of younger visitors appears to be increasing. Throughout the summer, various community groups have visited the woodland. The Buggyfit mums enjoy their weekly sessions (meet at Colliery Road entrance 1pm every Friday), pupils from Kiveton Park infant School took part in a mini-beast hunt, and the Kiveton Brownies had an evening guided walk around the site.

The programmed summer holiday events had more people

CoMMUNiTy WooDLANDbooking onto them than in previous years but regrettably the inclement weather put a number of people off and only two of the four events were supported. The events programme for 2009 is presently being drafted and should be available to the public from early-January. Copies will be available from the library and schools in the local area will be given copies for children to take home with them.

Latest update on the stone and memorial plaque is that the stone-mason has accepted the contract and we are now waiting on him to tell us when he can start. The work will take approximately one week.

There have recently been a number of incidents of criminal damage on site particularly around the Amphitheatre. if you see this or any other illegal activity on site, please report it to the police on 01142 202020. on no account should you approach or engage with the perpetrators.

KPWCDT: GARDEN UPDATE

Following the worst “summer” weather for decades, the completion of the garden gazebo is behind schedule and is unlikely to be completed now before the Spring.

This is a great disappointment to all of us BUT every cloud has a silver lining!! This means those of you that still wanted to order bricks after the original deadline may now have the opportunity to do so.

More good news is that Rotherham Probation Service have

decided to “adopt” the project for their 2009 sponsorship. This means that all of their workforce will do some voluntary hours working in the garden and all their sponsorship money will also go into the project.

We hope you will all agree that the quality of the construction work is more important than the speed of building.

JADE

young people from the Kiveton area have had a fantastic summer holiday this year thanks to the provision of activities at the Jade young people’s drop in centre. The centre has seen over 50 young people per day

attending to participate in DJ and Music technology activities and informal sessions where young people can relax and play xbox360 or surf the net.

The centre is open to everyone and provides a wide range of services from free internet access , iT training and support, DJ and music technology training, job search and pretty much anything else people may need help with. Now the holidays season is over Jade will be providing after school sessions Tuesday to Thursday 5.30 – 8.30pm and will be open most week days to adults from lunch time onwards.

Jade is a not for profit organisation providing charitable activities. it has been set up and is run by young people. SLiMMiNG WoRLDWoMAN oF THE yEAR iS TREATED To PAMPER SESSioN

Kiveton Park Slimming World member, Jennifer Hallam, was delighted to be voted by fellow slimmers as their Group’s Woman of the year. She had an extra surprise when the owner of local beauty salon, Joanna Louise,

presented her with a certificate and also a voucher for a three hour pampering session.

Slimming World Consultant, Suzanne Moyle, explains why Jennifer was a popular choice with the group which is held on Wednesday evenings, at St Johns Hall, a few doors up from Joanna Louise Beauty Salon. “As Jennifer’s weight has decreased we have seen her confidence and self esteem increase. Jennifer is a social team member and voluntarily helps me in group and is definitely an inspiration to other members.”

Jennifer chose from a wide variety of beauty treatments from stone therapy to manicures, massages to facials using products from the Dermatological range. Joanna Louise, who the salon is named after, kindly offered the beauty treatments after being impressed by Jennifer’s weight loss. “Losing over three stones is a fantastic achievement and hopefully after her treatments

she will not only look great but feel great too!”

Jennifer thoroughly enjoyed her pampering session which included an eyebrow shape and facial. “it is heaven!” She exclaims. “i still have further to go with my weight loss but i am never hungry and as no food is banned i am sure i will do it.” To help her, Jennifer buys a Slimming World Countdown

where she saves money by paying for classes in advance. “it means i always go to group, even when i am struggling.

Everyone is so friendly and supportive they help me get straight back on track for the following week. Having this special treat from Joanna Louise has definitely motivated me even more!”

it’s been a couple of really busy months for the History Society, which have seen much happening and some excellent meetings. Lots is planned over coming months.

in September, the Colliery offices were filled when a Medieval Barber Surgeon came to visit. He demonstrated all manner of gruesome techniques and methods. it’s astonishing that these were meant to make people better! our thanks to Knights in Battle for providing the speaker for this meeting.

Finningley Lodge held an excellent history evening recently. Dozens of people attended, reminisced and enjoyed historical music and entertainment. The museum displays were very impressive. The History Society were pleased to be invited and enjoyed giving a photographic presentation about the history of the area, which meandered eastwards from the former Waleswood Colliery all the way to Hard Lane Corner.

our November meeting saw the History Society and many guests meet at Kiveton Meadows School. our appreciation goes to those who took part. Mari Godfrey, Leri Morton, Betty

quinton and Eric Chambers all spoke about their research into the experiences of their descendents who served in the trenches of the First World War. Combined with a photographic presentation about the Kiveton and Wales Lads who died during the conflict, it made for a powerful evening. We’re proud to announce the inauguration of the Kiveton Park and Wales History Prize, which is to be awarded each year to the pupil who achieves most in the field of historical study at Wales High School. Created and sponsored by the History Society, the prize takes the form of an engraved trophy and a book voucher. The prize winner for 2009 will be announced soon.

Much is planned over coming months. our Christmas do is happening in early December and we look forward to a blue plaque being installed at Kiveton village Hall to honour local famous football manager Herbert Chapman. visitors to our website will see major updates coming on-line. We’ve spent months putting together descriptions and historical interpretation for the hundreds of photographs already on the site. These will start to be uploaded shortly. if you have any information about the photographs email [email protected].

Next November we will publish a book devoted to the experiences of Kiveton and Wales in both the wars. Get in contact with us if you have any documents, objects, family stories or memories about local experiences. There will be some excellent trips in 2009 and of course our normal regular meetings with a variety of speakers and entertainments. Our next meeting is 15 January at 6.30pm at the Colliery Offices.

The History Society has received thanks, which we pass on to all those who have contributed to our work over the last year, for the monies we have presented to local charities and good causes.
