Finalists in 2016 Heritage Awards: Community Based Organisation
In 2012 the SSJG Heritage Centre was the nominated winner of the State
Heritage Council Community Based Organisation category. Considering the
many improvements over the past four years, we made application again.
We are excited to inform you that we have been chosen as one of three
finalists with the winners to be announced on 31 March 2016.
The Sisters of Saint John of God (SSJG) Heritage Centre in Broome is a place
for the sharing of social history related to the Sisters of St John of God and
the people of the Kimberley. It comprises the heritage listed Old Convent,
Garden of Healing, Archive and Research Centre, Pomegranate House and
the award winning and permanent 'Relationships Exhibition'.
This social history exhibition was inspired, in part, by requests from locals for
a place where people could access family and historical photographs. It uses
storyboards, artefacts, photographs and audio-visual media to give insight into
the relationships formed by the Sisters with the Aboriginal people. The photographic collection of
over 50,000 images is our specialised heritage product and is accessible to the public for viewing
and research. Read about it here 2016 WA Heritage Awards Finalists
Volunteers in Preparation for 2016 During the first week of
February new and returning
volunteers opted to attend
one of three workshops
provided where they could
share news and make plans
for the opening of the
Relationships Exhibition the
following week. The gatherings also provided
opportunity to view changes
in the Exhibition made
during the three months
closure.

Derby Family Search for Photos Joy Wodulan who is now known as Joy Cooper was
visiting Broome from Derby trying to locate family
information. She was directed to the Relationships
Exhibition and with the assistance of a volunteer, Joy
found two identified photos of her mother (Molly
Wodulan) as a young woman in Derby. The photos
were actually taken in the grounds of the school
Convent. The family were delighted and Joy was able to share
stories of her mother with the younger members of the
family. Molly got to know the Sisters through their
visits to the Derby Reserve and her visits to the
Convent. Joy herself went to Holy Rosary School.
