The Bank of Ireland in Castleisland is to host two Enterprise Town Expo days at the local community centre on Friday and Saturday 13th and 14th of November. Part of a nationwide initiative by the bank, the event is designed to show-case the businesses, services, cultural and sporting services and facilities the town has at its disposal. “Enterprise Town is an initiative whereby we seek to work with the local business community to plan, develop and implement a range of activities that will support and generate business in the local community,” said branch manager, Paddy Garvey. “This initiative also involves the wider community i.e. schools, clubs, societies and charities, ensuring everyone can get involved in the showcasing of their town. “Showcasing of all the town has to offer is achieved by way of two Expos, one of which will be held on Friday 13th November, which is the Business and Community Expo and the second event, which is the Sports and Community Expo will be held on Saturday 14th, November. “Bank of Ireland, Castleisland will also work closely with the schools in the town and present an Enterprise Award to the winning student from the local schools that take part. Both events are being held in Castleisland Community Centre.“This is a fantastic opportunity for all businesses, clubs, societies and schools to showcase and sell their wares to the public. We provide the platform for them to achieve this and from businesses at incubation stage and perhaps working from home, to those well established businesses, all are welcome

to attend. “In addition to the showcasing, we will also have keynote speakers over the two days. These will include some local celebrities from the business and sports world and we will also include panel discussions that will benefit those exhibiting. There will be lots of entertainment and fun for families, children and the general public and it’s free to attend for both exhibitors and members of the public,” Mr. Garvey concluded.

Kerry may not be the 2015 All Ireland football champions but celebrations still took place in the county at the weekend to honour one of icons of Irish sport, Mick Galwey. The Currow native, now domicile in Sionhermitage, Sion Road in Kilkenny, was honoured when a roundabout on the new Castleisland bypass was named after the rugby and GAA star on Friday evening. The event was attended by Mick Galwey, his wife Joan, children Ruraide, Neasa and Una, local politicans and representatives of Castleisland Rugby Club, Tralee Rugby Club and St. Kieran’s GAA Club along with family and friends. “I never dreamed that a bypass on the gateway to Kerry would be named after me. I am speechless and deeply honoured. On each visit to Kerry I will pass this roundabout and feel a little

pride when I see the stone marking the dedication. Many thanks to Mayor Bobby O’Connell for this wonderful honour,” said Mick as he unveiled the commemorative plaque. Born in Currow, Mick won an All Ireland senior football championship with Kerry in 1986. Galwey was a key figure in Shannon RFC’s side during their famous “Four in a row” winning streak of All- Ireland League titles in the late 1990s. Galwey’s involvement in the Irish national rugby team began in 1991 against France and continued for 11 years. In the 1993 Five Nations Championship match against England, Galwey rounded off a fine display in the 17–3 defeat by scoring the only try of the game. His efforts were rewarded later that year when he was selected for the Lions tour to New Zealand..

As we continue our shopping tour around the county we find ourselves in Castleisland this month, and what a town. It’s got so much to offer the shopper. Some years back when the famous bypass was discussed there was mixed reaction to it, was it a good idea? Well I think from just walking around town now yes there are positives to it, parking is definitely easer to avail of, traffic is not as congested so this would make one want to come back, it certainly is a vibrant town and with a number of new businesses opening as I walk around the town it’s refreshing to see lots of action happening behind windows and we are looking forward to seeing these new stores. We have also learned that Castleisland is now looking at the option of setting up a business Chamber which will be great for the town, a support to all businesses

The selection of shops available in Castleisland is as good as any major town in many parts of the country; The Fashion Capital of Kerry is not a title they take for granted here with latest in fashion houses stocking leading labels for any occasion it’s a one stop shopping experience for any occasion. If you are looking for a car you have garages with brand names such as Volkswagen, Opel or BMW.

Should you want to revamp your home you are spoilt for choice with

furniture and lighting as well as décor and electrical appliances? Looking to change your hairstyle or have your nails or makeup done, your spoilt for choice and when you are hungry from all that shopping the choice of eateries is endless so for a small town it’s got lots to offer, and the best thing we found about all this was everyone seems to know everyone and they all work together, if you can’t find what you are looking for in a particular shop you will be told ‘pop down there to Mary she will certainly help you’ I just love that.

Carmel in Fashion World and Joi Boutique tells us she has new collections arriving weekly in sizes 8-22. They have personally selected daytime chic collaborated with unique dresses and separates that transition through all occasions. With an amazing collection of footwear also, they offer laid back luxury and a fabulous shopping experience so definitely worth calling to see them.

David Costello Shoes are a name renowned for quality and comfortable shoes at fantastic prices, with brand names like HOGL, GIONNI and Kids favourite GEOX there is something for all the family, if you have a special occasion you are sure to complete your outfit with shoes and bag, or just looking for a good

everyday bag they have a fab collection for you to choose from.

Hannons of Course is a household name for over 75 years for occasion wear, but what caught our eye this trip was the range of cool winter collections, casual coordinates and beautiful wool coats and cosy cardigans it would make you look forward to the bad winter weather.

Divas and Dudes is one of my personal favourites as they have the cutest collection of kids clothes I have seen, if you are looking to dress your little diva or dude for a special occasion Denise will ensure you get everything you need, she has a collection of exclusive labels and caters for up to age 16.

Shine hair studio have a collection of leading brands for all you need to have the perfect hair. Stocking names like Moroccan oil, Olaplex and an amazing brand called Nioxin. This helps thinning hair and is gentle on your scalp. Norma and her team are professionals and are available for wedding consultations to create the perfect look for your big day.Speaking of big days, a new addition to the town is Unique Bridal, which has opened its doors at the end of the town opposite the car park by the Killarney road. Dee had a chat with me about the labels she is bringing to the town and her plans for the store. It’s spacious and bright and as well as a collection of leading designers with gracious gowns she has a separate department with casual and affordable clothing, she is also offering an alteration service so it really is a one stop shop. Call Dee for an appointment and she will source your dream dress for your big day.

The cave is open daily from 10am & the visitor centre offers something for everyone. Another great business in castleisland that keeps the local people up to date hourly is The Maine Valley Post. Castleisland’s own Daily News Website, Since it

was established just over two years ago, The Maine Valley Post has grown in both reputation and audience to the point that its website, www.mainevalleypost.com was accessed on an average of 11,000 weekly views - and climbing.

That’s really just a sample of what’s on offer for a day out in Castleisland. I assure you it will be worth travelling and we will certainly be back again very soon...

RECOMMENDS Olaplex - this month we are reviewing the latest product in haircare. Olaplex has been branded the hair repair product of summer 2015 so, when I was invited by Hairworks Hair Salon in Tralee to have my brain shell treated to this luscious treatment I readily made myself available. It was time for a long overdue colour too so it was time to scratch myself out of the work diary for a couple of hours.. Well I was working really as I am reviewing the product... one needs to tell themselves this!!!The process began by mixing the Bond Multiplier No.1 directly into my colour and applied, this was left to work into my hair, as the colour was rinsed the olaplex number 2 bond perfector was then applied for 5 minutes and left to work in the hair. My hair was shampooed as normal, step 3 is a Hair Perfector that is part of this professional service that you’ll use once a week. It will make a huge difference in the health of your hair adding volume and strength to broken and brittle hair and life and luxury to dry and damaged hair.I have to say the treatment didn’t take too long at all, and considering the results

on my hair I would highly recommend it, I can feel an amazing difference in my hair after just one treatment, so check it out today.

Olaplex is available at Hair Works hair salon and other good salons around the county.

We at Shine offer the highest level of hair styling from our beautiful colors, highlights and cuts to our amazing up styles and blow-dries

So Jennifer tell us a little about your outfit? This dress is one of my favourite dresses by Chi Chi London. I love to wear black and vintage inspired styles. My shoes and bag are both from Penney’s. My 1950s hair style is by Amy O Hara at The Hair Boutique, Tralee.

Were you surprised and delighted when they called you as the winner? I was so surprised to win! There were so many stylish ladies on the night! When I heard, the winner is Jennifer... I was looking around to see where Jennifer was! I didn’t believe it was me.

What are your plans for the prize? I plan to share the prize with my sister in law Lisa Martin. We had planned on going to Ladies Day in Listowel this year and to attend with a VIP package will be a fantastic experience. I am really looking forward to the day!

Would you attend a lot of fashion events and would you normally be aiming for the best dressed? I love to attend fashion events and evenings in Tralee. These events are always in support of local charities or for great causes. It’s

always fantastic to get dolled up, meet the girls and see the style! You see a lot of familiar faces at these events and it becomes a great occasion

Tell us a little about your shopping secrets do you always go for brands or do you like to seek a bargain and personalise it? Everyone who knows me knows I live in converse and skinny jeans. When I’m shopping for an event, I love vintage styles or simple shift dresses. These styles are timeless and flattering. Being comfortable in what style suits you and your shape is the key, except when wearing stilettos then I just say “the higher the better”!

What are your favourite shops? Being from Tralee, of course Penney’s and Vero Moda are a staple in my wardrobe! Tralee and Kerry as a whole has fantastic shops and boutiques, you cannot go wrong. My sister Deanna has taught me to mix the high end labels with the high street, so I steal that style secret from her!

Sizes stocked 8-16

This month we asked Sandra in Weardrobe for some advice on a workwear wardrobe.

As the saying goes - Life's too short to wear boring clothes!

How many of you are guilty of constantly wearing that 'safe' black trousers and boring old shirt to work?....because it's 'only' work after all! You spend so much time at work, yet you don't spend time thinking about a 'work wardrobe'. You are often possibly thinking something is just too 'good' to wear to work....but this is so wrong!

When you look good, you feel good - this shouldn't just apply to going out and special occasions - work is a big part of your life and it is important to make an eort.

Think about it. You might be the rst point of contact for a customer. It is a fact that people judge us within the rst 7 seconds of meeting us...so if you don't look 'the part' that customer may very well go elsewhere!

If, for example, you are a school teacher. You stand in front of a room full of impressionable students - if you don't care about your image, then why should they? Ironically, if you ask a small child who their favourite teacher is, it will most often be the one who dresses well!

You really don't need to compromise comfort and practicality for style. Good news...style can be comfortable! Smart tailored jackets can feel like cosy cardigans but look so much smarter. Dress for your size and your shape...think of the 'image' you are projecting! Co-ordinate but don't over style with jewellery and accessories.

Remember, footwear can be stylish AND comfortable!

TARGET! Make sure you’re not the reason HR is sending out thatdress code refresher! Set yourself a challenge to inject some style into your workwear wardrobe.

It’s October- so we are thinking Pink and Breast Cancer Awareness.Approximately 2000 Irish women develop breast cancer each year. 1:10 women will develop breast cancer at some stage in their lives. While most the illness is more common in older women, it can occur in any age. Men can also develop breast cancer, although rarely.

So can we do anything to reduce the risk of breast cancer?

Lifestyle changes are scientifically shown to help to reduce risks of breast cancer.

• Weight Management, Healthy Eating and Physical Exercise Being obese is strongly associated with developing breast cancer. There is also some evidence that women with breast cancer who are treated, but remain overweight, are more likely to develop recurrences. The best way to lose weight is with a combination of healthy eating and exercise. The best way to do this with the assistance of a dietician or personal trainer rather than crash / fad diets. You should be able to access dietary support via your GP. The more unprocessed foods you eat the better. Avoid high sugar foods. By doing regular exercise such as walking or swimming you will keep your weight healthy. You will also feel better- even when the weather isn’t good there are lots of options such as classes, swimming (if you don’t swim aqua aerobics or aqua jogging are options). Always build in some strength training. If you are worried about what’s right for you or a physiotherapist can guide you on that.

• Limit Alcohol Intake Heavy alcohol intake is associated with developing breast cancer, and also other cancers.

• Cigarette Smoking People usually associate smoking with lung cancer. However, research is now showing an association between cigarette smoking and breast cancer. By giving up smoking you

will improve your general health and help to reduce your risk of osteoporosis. Pharmacists have all the training to help you find the best aid to giving up smoking. In recent weeks, public health specialists in the UK and US have come out supporting e cigarettes as a safe tool for smoking cessation. In some situations your GP may offer prescription medications to help you.

• Toxins Avoiding exposure to unnecessary toxins, radiation and chemicals is important incl BPAs.

• Breastfeeding Medical research suggests that breastfeeding reduces the risk of breast cancer in the future. There are lots of supports nowadays to help women to successfully breastfeed. Breastfeeding Kerry with Anna O’Donoghue, Lactation Consultant, runs regular classes.

What about being on the Pill?Current medical research does not show any link between being on the Pill and developing breast cancer.

What about HRT?All international guidelines state that being on HRT, in itself, does not increase the risk of breast cancer. In cases where there is a strong family history advice from a breast cancer specialist can be sought. For women who need HRT their prescription can be reviewed at 5 years when there may be a marginal increase in risk. Vaginal oestrogen tablets are safe overall.

Is there a genetic link?In cases where there is a strong family history of breast cancer a woman’s risk may be increased and extra checks can be put in place. In recent times there has been a lot of publicity surrounding the option of surgery to remove breast tissue in women with significant risks. This should not be undertaken lightly.

This is a very true statement and it really gets to me when I hear ‘my child won’t touch cheese’ or ‘gosh he wouldn’t eat fish in a fit unless it’s a fish finger’, our children are guided by us... we as parents need to develop their taste buds and yes while we can get the response ‘no I don’t like that’ I think kids should be encouraged to try everything, they are not going to like all they eat, but you hear it regularly, ‘I don’t like that mum’., did you ever try it? ‘No I just don’t like it’. This is a not good enough reason, we should as parents encourage our kids to try new things, we are not going to win all the time, but at least we try.

How can we make it fun to try new foods? If we want to cut out fizzy drinks from the diet we start by slowly introducing some milk or water into the slots they are normally having fizzy drinks, it will be a change but in no time it will become part of the daily routine, and that is what it all becomes really is routine. Try new veg and fruits you’re not going to win with them all but have fun trying...

ConneCtIt’s that time of year, counting the weeks to Christmas, planning a night out with work colleagues and want to buy that special outfit for it, or maybe you just want to make yourself feel a little healthier facing the long winter months... it’s all too easy to say ‘The weather is too bad to go for a walk’ or ‘I don’t have time to go to exercise class there is so much homework to do with the kids’ we have all said it, but the reality is we need to get ourselves in the right mind-set. We look after those around us but how many of us stop and think about ourselves?

It is now widely known that Cardiovascular Disease is the biggest killer of women in Ireland, but 1in 5 women are not aware of this. What is the main cause of this? For most of us stress in our daily lives can have an

adverse effect in our heart, brain and our body in general, so how do we lessen this happening in

our daily lives?

We should all stop for a moment and take a look at our typical day and

try make some necessary changes, there is no point having a high powered job and a 5 figure income if we are not going to be around at 50 to enjoy life with our family, so while we all want to best of everything maybe it’s time to stop and think what is the best. Here

are just a few things we need to review regularly.

• Look at our daily routine and ask what we can change to make it more workable for all.

• Examine our diet and what we eat each day, this is an exercise that can be done with all the family and we can have some fun doing it and trying out new recipes.

• Time out time…. We need to structure our lives in a way that we make time for those around us but also time for ourselves; everyone needs a bit of me-time so when planning the day allocate a little.

• Family time- always ensure that at least one day at the weekend is set aside for a little time together as a family, if it’s just a walk on the beach, its time spent together so do make the effort.

Every child is unique. Children develop at various rates and their development has to be considered in the context of their individual experiences. With this in mind we are presenting a set of symptoms to help parents determine if their child may have a language disorder. Parents may become concerned if their child:

• Doesn’t smile/ interact with others (birth–3 months)• Doesn’t babble (4–7 months)• Makes few sounds (by 12 months)• Does not use gestures (waving, pointing) (by 12 months)• Doesn’t understand what others say (by 2 years)• Says only a few words (12-18 months)• Doesn’t put words together to make sentences (by 3 years). Expect

2-words sentences like “drink gone” by 2years • Has trouble playing and talking with other children (2–3 years)• Has problems with early reading and writing skills—for example, may

not show an interest in books or drawing (2½–3 years)

(The above set was developed by the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association).

TheIMPORTANCE OF EMOTIONAL HEALTHFrom when we are very little, we learn how to look after our physical health. We are taught to brush our teeth, eat our vegetables, wash and keep ourselves clean. When we fall and scrape our elbow, we put antiseptic and a band-aid on it. When we have an infection, we treat it with antibiotics. If we break a leg, we go to hospital. We are not afraid to look after ourselves and seek help with physical ailments – everybody knows how important it is to take care of your health, right?

Yet somehow, we don’t take the same care of our emotional and psychological health. It’s understandable in some ways. Very often, the effects of emotional ill-health are not as visible as those of physical ill-health, and are easier to ignore. Nobody can see if you are feeling lonely, or depressed, or anxious, in part because we become quite good at hiding those things. However, these feelings have such an effect on our lives, as much as physical illnesses. A very high proportion of prescriptions written by doctors are for anti-depressants, anxiety regulators or mood moderators. Learning to take care of our emotional health makes good sense, and many of the strategies for this having the added

benefit of helping our physical health as well. Things such as exercise, diet, mindfulness, breathing techniques, relaxation and a work-life balance are good for us in every way. In addition, talking things over with friends, finding ways to express our feelings appropriately and learning how to problem-solve and resolve conflict, all help us to deal with life. It also helps to be aware of when you are facing stress in your life, and your responses to it. Do you have difficulty in sleeping? Are you over- or under-eating? Do you find yourself becoming short-tempered and irritable? These are often signs that you need to step back and look at how you handle stress. Of course, sometimes there are deeper issues that need further intervention. The effects of difficult experiences or circumstances can have long lasting effects, and you may need help to deal with those in a safe and controlled way. In the long-term, it pays to look after your emotional and psychological health.

STRENGTH & CONDITIONING

We are all very much aware that exercise is important and should be part of our daily life, but to know the correct one for you we went along to Catriona at the Harmony Leisure Centre in Manor West Hotel to get her tips and advice on exercise. She gives us the following guidelines on strength training. “Must Public health guidelines promote aerobic exercise such as running, walking or cycling. All of these cardiovascular activities are very beneficial to our health. However strength training is a component of fitness that is often forgotten in our exercise routine. Benefits of strength training

STRENGTHIt may seem obvious but increase in strength, power and endurance is not only for the elite athlete it will help everyone with their performance in everyday tasks like lifting, gardening, walking up stairs, hanging up the clothes on the line etc.No matter what sport or activity you are into, strength training will help you excel. It is a fantastic supplement to someone that is already physically active and would like to take their sport/ activity to the next level.

INJURY PREVENTIONStrong muscles, tendons and ligaments are less likely to become injured. A large amount of sports-related and life related injuries can be prevented by a proper strength training routine. Make sure your programme takes in every muscle group to avoid imbalance. Always seek advice from one of the Fitness team if coming back from injury to ensure a safe recovery.

INCREASE BONE DENSITYOver time as you age, inactivity can lead to bones becoming more brittle and decreasing in density, leading to diseases like osteoporosis. By doing regular strength training, research has shown that you can not only maintain bone density but you can also build on it.

BODY COMPOSITIONStrength training is a great way to increase you metabolic rate (the rate in which you burn calories at rest). It will also increase your lean muscle mass and overall strength helping you work out for longer and have more energy. This combination will help you achieve and maintain your goal weight.

POSTURE The way you sit and stand is influenced by the health of a network of neck, shoulder, back, hip and abdominal muscles. Stronger muscles will help you sit straighter and more comfortable. Maintain muscle balance and stability.

LOOK GOOD, FEEL GREATAll of the above combined, as well as better muscle tone will help increase confidence and self-esteem. Strength training can help you age more gracefully and feel more alive and vibrant. A good exercise programme will help reduce stress and anxiety and help you cope better with day to day life. Examples of muscle strengthening activities:Exercises using hand held weights, weight machines and resistance bands.Fitness Classes including TRX Kettlebells, Dumbells.Digging, lifting and carrying while gardening.Carrying groceries & general housework.

Sensible resistance/strength training involves controlled movements of each muscle group. It does not require you to lift heavy weights. Along with your cardio-vascular activity, strength training should be a central component of your training routine.”

We love to meet new talent in CONNECT so this month we are delighted to introduce you to Artist Maureen O Mahony, Maureen is a largely self-taught artist from Dublin now living in Kerry. I came across her through the now very famous painting ‘Birthright’ we hear all about Birthright in our interview I think you will enjoy it...

Where did you love of Art come from? I have always loved colour and tone on tone, how light falls, how colour mixes blends and clashes. Patterns textures have great appeal for me.

Were you always into art even as a young child or was it something you developed over the years? For me it developed over time I always love photography especially black and white and always with people in them

Art is not a job really it’s a way of life and normally something the artist loves to do, what inspires you to do it all the time?Usually from children, their freedom joy and innocence. How they can be so totally caught up in a moment in time. What they are wearing. There is so much about them that inspires me

Would you do a special commission for someone if requested? Absolutely my work is mainly of children in informal settings, reading a book to teddy, playing in the sand, kicking a football wearing their favourite jersey. Each child is so special in their own way and that has to be conveyed in the painting and it always is.It is all about them so that’s why informal works best. Their favourite clothes, toy, book etc. I usually take the photos in their own home where they are most relaxed.

What is your favourite piece of art from all the world renowned artists? I don’t have one particular piece. I love Rembrandt’s self-portraits and how he conveys the passage of time using himself I also love John Singer Sargent’s paintings of children how he captures their spirit and innocence.

What is your advice to anybody interested in art and thinking of making a career out of it? It’s very simple if you want to paint paint. Desire is the most important thing to have. Just begin the process and trust. Study from the best. What artist or style do you resonate with? Study their technique. If there is a voice in your head telling you that you can’t do this silence it by painting?

So tell us about Birthright...I wanted to create a Kerry/GAA painting which would emulate the strength and depth of the green and gold of Kerry GAA for a long time. This special painting needed a “raison d’etre”,

my inspiration came from Witnessing the ravages of Motor Neurone Disease This painting with a Kerry Jersey and an O’Neill’s football has been my most popular in any exhibition.

“Birthright” was auctioned at the Primrose Ball in aid of Motor Neuron Disease, in honour of the late Tommy Brosnan who suffered from and died from the disease. Similarly, my brother-in-law Stocky O’Mahony was also very ill with the Motor Neurone Disease and has since passed I asked Kate Brosnan to tell me little about her father, I wanted to formulate an image in my mind that would gain attention. As the painting progressed I began to see its potential to grasp the essence of Kerry in a picture. This happened very quickly. The painting was still wet going to Dublin. “Birthright” was finished, printed and auctioned within five days. I wanted advice about how to sell this special Kerry print. On the day of the Primrose Ball I met Niall O Loinsigh for coffee and a chat in Kerins O’Rahillys GAA Clubhouse and by pure coincidence met Eoin “Bomber” Liston. Bomber arranged a meeting with the Kerry county board Chairman, Peter Twiss who thought it would be a great way for all the Loyal supporters throughout the world to support the future of Kerry Football!! Niall asked The Bomber what he thought of “Birthright”. He absolutely loved it and bought the “Birthright” on behalf of the county board at the Primrose Ball auction at Ballygarry House Hotel. “Birthright” then travelled from Kerry to a GAA fundraiser in The Plaza Hotel, New York in May 2015, “Birthright” sold again at auction. In June a print of “Birthright” travelled to London was auctioned for a substantial amount at the Grange Hotel, St Paul’s, on Friday, Marty Morrissey, Dara O’Cinneide, and Weeshie Fogarty co-hosted the fundraising evening. It is now available from the GAA shop in Killarney, and other outlets. I also have it for sale. The reaction has been huge. Thanks to everyone for their kind words of support and to all who have purchased the print.

The distinction between an employee and an independent contractor is of critical importance for both the person providing the services and the company/person using the services. If the services are provided by an independent contractor then the relationship is purely commercial and any termination of the contract can only be disputed as breach of a commercial agreement. There is a key distinction in employment law between a “contract for services” and an employment contract. The employee works under a contract of services or an employment contract, whereas an independent contractor provides services under a contract for services.Irish law offers robust protection for the employee. For example, the rights and remedies provided for under the Unfair Dismissals Acts only apply to employees. It follows that independent contractors cannot avail of these statutory rights. Likewise employers are only vicariously liable for torts or ‘wrongs’ committed by employees. Independent contractors under a contract for services are responsible for their own torts.

How to tell if you are an employee or a contractor? An individual would normally be self-employed if he or she:

• Owns his or her own business• Is exposed to financial risk• Has control over what is done, how it is done, when and

where it is done and whether he or she does it personally• Is free to hire other people, on his or her terms, to do the work

which has been agreed to be undertaken• Can provide the same services to more than one person or

business at the same time• Provides the materials for the job Provides equipment and

machinery necessary for the job, other than the small tools of the trade or equipment which in an overall context would not be an indicator of a person in business on their own account

• Costs and agrees a price for the job• Provides his or her own insurance cover e.g. public liability

cover, etc.• Controls the hours of work in fulfilling the job obligations.

If you have any queries regarding this issue or any other employment related queries please contact Una the head of the Employment Law department at the HR Suite.

Understanding the difference between being an employee or a contractor

It’s that time of year where one must retrieve the books and records and make some attempt to put them together. The deadline is approaching so allocate the time.

Rather than tearing your hair out and losing countless night’s sleep, take a deep breath and bite the bullet. The thought is usually far worse than the length of time it actually takes.

Income Tax 2014As the economy recovers unfortunately Income Tax normally increases which can lead to cash flow difficulties. Firstly find out your tax liability rather than guessing. Where full payment is not possible come up with a structured plan to deal with it. NB: Don’t file your return late and ignore letter requesting payment. This will usually cost you more and cause a lot more stress.

Preliminary Tax for 2015Preliminary Tax also becomes due on the 31st October. This is normally calculated based on 100% of the 2014 Tax liability. It can also be based on 90% of the liability for 2015 provided an accurate calculation can be made.

Late FilingThe deadline is the 31st October unless you are using ROS. There is an immediate 5% Penalty for failure to file your income tax return on time. This increases to 10% if your return is filed later than 2 months. In addition interest for late payment may also be charged by the Revenue.

Revenue on Line (ROS)As is the norm now there is an extension until Thursday 12th November for anyone who is paying and filing online using ROS.

NB: Extension only applies if full payment is made online when filing return.
