FROM THE PRINCIPAL Dear Parents, Friends, Staff and Students of Caroline Chisholm College,

This week we have entered the season of Advent which provides us with a wonderful opportunity to prepare for the birth of Jesus at Christmas. This preparation might include:

• creating some extra time each day to pray either individually or as a family

• looking for ways to reach out to others, for example, through our contributions to the St Vincent de Paul hampers or by spending some time with neighbours who may not have the support of family or friends

• becoming involved in Parish Advent activities • attending Mass more frequently during this time.

This season marks the beginning of our Church year and is thus a time for new resolutions - particularly in regard to what should be most important in our life - our relationships with God, our family and friends. In what ways will you mark this new beginning? St Vincent de Paul Hampers The response to this appeal has so far been quite slow. The local chapter of St Vincent de Paul are expecting many requests for help this year. Your support of this initiative can really make a difference to someone’s Christmas. Please give generously. May She Rest in Peace Mrs Debbie Gibson, wife of Wayne and mother of Caitlin (Year 10) and Dale, died last week in hospital and will be buried today. Our sincere sympathy and prayers are extended to the family.

May eternal rest be granted unto her, O Lord

May unending light shine upon her May she rest in peace. Amen

25 Years of Service to Catholic Education Last week Bishop Kevin Manning presided at a special ceremony designed to acknowledge teachers and support staff who had served the Diocese of Parramatta and Catholic education for at least 25 years. Three members of our staff and two members of our parent community received this prestigious award to recognise their commitment and dedication. Congratulations to Mr Greg King and Mrs Debbie Fanning for their ongoing service to our college community and to Mrs Clifton and Mrs Donna-Lee Hughes who are parent members of our community as well as belonging to the school communities where they serve. I was the other member of staff to also be presented with the 25 Year Service Award and was also very honoured to receive this award.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL CAROLINE CHISHOLM COLLEGE

Students’ Successes Over the last two weeks many students have been recognised in a variety of ways at various community functions for their individual and group achievements. These are reported in more detail later in this newsletter. Congratulations to:

• Jaclyn Baiada and Katherine Hyland (Year 11) who each received the prestigious Victor Chang Award for outstanding achievements in Science.

• The Year 11 Team of Stephanie Valle, Leanne Miller-Bassett, Alissa Morada, Samantha Evans, Ajita Joshi, Larissa Sawagid, Amanda Burton, Christine Looyschelder and Rachel Ellis who were the winning team in the Write-a-Book-in-a-Day Competition for their children’s story entitled The General Deception and were presented with their trophy by author, Mr John Larkin at a ceremony at Westmead Hospital.

• the History team of Samriddhi Joshi, Kiera Warda, Sylvia Quinlan, Bianca Azzopardi and Sarha Thornton who were coached by Ms Jacka. They were runners up in a competition organised by UWS and which will be televised early next year.

• our eight talented H.S.C. artists, Stevie-Lee Boardman, Christine Ghali, Ashley Blackburn, Hailey Morrison, Anne Cutajar, Rukshani Keenawinna, Amy Meekings and Kirsty Pascoe - whose work has been pre-selected for possible inclusion in Art Express. This is, once again, an outstanding achievement for our students and the Visual Arts teachers Mrs Woods, Mrs King, Ms Cusack and Ms Eyles.

• Lucy Palu, Paige Blake and Alix Roberts who are the Parramatta Diocese Age Champions in Swimming. • Emily Clifton, Jessica Hellyer, Brittany Bond, Natalie Hatchman, Kasey Pender, Candice Campbell, Gabrielle

Bartolo, Cassie Sciberras, Tamara Warwick, Emily Shepherd, Ashleigh Wall, Jessica Apap and Victoria Sua who were recognised at the Transition Awards ceremony.

• our Year 11 Hospitality students, Jacqui Chappell, Kayla Messina, Carlie Smith, Sarah Majdoub, Rebecca Lesch, Justine Colyer, Sheridan Merz, Cassie Masina, Natalie Pitkin, and Lauren Mayhew. who prepared the food and served it to the parent volunteers at Our Lady of the Way’s Thank You luncheon.

Pizzazz and all that Jazz Congratulations to the talented primary students from Mary MacKillop, Bethany, Our Lady of the Way, St Nicholas of Myra and St Joseph’s who participated last Thursday in workshops in dance, drama, music and photography. (Unfortunately due to other commitments, Holy Family and Corpus Christi were unable to participate this year.) Thankyou to Ms Claire O’Brien who coordinated this new initiative with the great support or our Creative Arts faculty including Mrs Tuting, Ms Latty, Ms Eyles, Mr Caws and Mrs King, the Creative Arts Coordinator. Much of the success of the day was due to the involvement of our own students who acted as tutors for the primary students. The culmination of the workshops was a concert to showcase the students’ work. It was great to have such an appreciative audience. Staff Development Day - 8 December On this day, staff will have the opportunity to evaluate some of the learning initiatives implemented this year and work on programs for 2009. Supervision will be available at the college for any student whose parent(s) is/are not able to make alternative arrangements. Please notify the college by Friday, 4 December if you will be requiring this supervision. Year 12 Formal Congratulations to our Year 12 graduates on the completion of their H.S.C. studies which they celebrated recently at their Formal at Oatlands House. As the photographs show, they were beautifully presented and their behaviour was exemplary. Thank you to Miss White the Year 12 Coordinator for all her work which included organising the Formal. All the students, their partners and the staff had an enjoyable and memorable night. Lifelong Learning A strong commitment to ongoing learning is a feature of the Caroline Chisholm College community. Last week three members of our office staff were presented with certificates to mark their successful completion of a two year program leading to the Certificate IV in Business (Frontline Management). Congratulations to Mrs Janene Clifton, Mrs Ruth Crilly and Mrs Kim Maxwell for their achievements.

FROM THE ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL FROM THE LEADER OF LEARNING &

TEACHING SUMMER READING CHALLENGE

CAROLINE CHISHOLM COLLEGE

From the Assistant Principal Uniform Just to highlight the critical uniform issues which need to be addressed by the start of next year:

• Skirts need to be at least to the middle of the knees.

If this is not the case, the hem needs to be taken down or a new skirt bought. When new skirts are bought, please do not cut off the hem when they are taken up. This happens frequently and, obviously, impacts on the capacity of the skirt to accommodate growth. Students who start next year with their skirts at the wrong length will be sent home and will not be permitted to attend classes until their uniform is in accordance with College requirements.

• Shoes need to be black leather, lace-up covered in, for all students.

This is both a uniform and an Occupational Health and Safety issue. If you cannot buy this type of shoe immediately, try a different store. We have faxed our requirements to every shoe store in Penrith. None have said they do not stock this type of shoe. Could I also ask parents to label clothing, particularly items likely to be removed, like jumpers, jackets and hats? We would be lucky if 1 in 10 items have names on them. Piercings The only pierced jewellery allowed in the college are earrings (up to 2 in each ear). Students who insist on having other parts of their face pierced will not be allowed to wear anything in the piercing. This has always been made clear to students. If students decide to go ahead with a piercing they need to know they run the risk of it closing up while they have nothing in it while they are at school. This includes clear sleepers. Mr Greg King - Assistant Principal From the Leader of Learning and Teaching Yr 12 assessment schedules have been published for the HSC 2009 and in many subjects the first task will be this term. Biology, Studies of Religion and Society and Culture have all had their first task and teachers have very pleased with the work that is being produced in class. If you have not already done so, please take the time to read through the assessment guidelines with your daughter, particularly the procedures relating to illness and misadventure for HSC tasks. Last week, Margot Braithwaite from the Board of Studies spoke to the students about the nature of the HSC and assessment. It was a very timely and informative session which the students appreciated. The new Learning and Resource Centre is now operational with the students very enthusiastic about the new open spaces, the Reading Room and the overall brightness of the space. Work has now begun on the Senior Learning Centre and the newly refurbished space incorporating a casual area will be a welcome addition to the senior learning facilities in 2009. Ms Lisa-Maree Browning Leader of Learning & Teaching

SUMMER READING CHALLENGE WIN ONE OF THREE iPod Nanos!

The Executive director of schools, Greg Whitby has announced a Summer Reading Challenge for all students in the Parramatta Diocese. Students

need to read 10 or more age-appropriate books in order to go into the draw to win one of three iPod Nanos.

Entries close at 5pm on Friday 6 February 2009. Full details, entry forms, log sheets and terms and conditions can be downloaded from the CE website: www.parra.catholic.edu.au

This is a great way to spend those quiet moments during the Christmas holidays, and maybe even win an iPod! Happy reading everyone! Mrs Janine Hanna - Teacher Librarian

Science On Thursday 20th November, three combined science classes from Year 10 had the opportunity to utilise the new Learning and Resource Centre. We were divided into groups in which we conducted research into our chosen topic relating to climate change. Some examples of the issues addressed include the enhanced greenhouse effect, melting of ice caps and water pollution. The groups are presenting their finished products to Year 7 classes and the best presentation will be sent to Penrith City Council. The Learning and Resource Centre has provided us with a suitable working environment. It has been through our teacher’s assistance, various technology aspects and our newly established library that we have been able to take advantage of this new room and way of learning. We look forward to seeing the renovated senior study area next year. Clare Decena, Vicki Stanojevic and Jessica Cheung - Year 10

OUR LADY OF THE WAY MORNING TEA

CREATIVE ARTS NEWS

CAROLINE CHISHOLM COLLEGE

Our Lady of the Way Morning Tea Our two Year 11 Hospitality classes have recently been involved in catering for the Parent Helper’s Morning Tea at Our Lady of the Way Primary School, Emu Plains. This catering opportunity involved a lengthy process of organisation and planning including discussing the requirements of the day with the Primary Co-ordinator, Mrs Ann Burke, planning the menu, finding suitable recipes, ordering the food items and making, plating and serving the foods to the crowd of hungry helpers! It started with a busy day of food preparation on Thursday 27th November. Both Mrs Larsen’s and Ms Blakers’ Hospitality classes joined together to prepare and pack all the food items ready for Friday’s morning tea. On Friday 28th November, Mrs McKee, Mrs Mills and 10 of the Year 11 Hospitality students travelled to Our Lady of the Way, Emu Plains to set up the hall, plate up the platters and serve the foods to the parent helpers. After a small detour on the way to get a camera to record our day, we arrived at the school and were greeted by Mrs Burke who briefed us on what we were required to do. Then it was time to serve all the delicious foods! Some of the food items served were Asparagus Tarts, Cherry Tomato and Bocconcini Tarts, Mini Bruschetta, Mini Cheesecakes and Banana Carmel Slice. After all the helpers had gone and all the cleaning was done, we had the opportunity to visit a Year 1 class. The students were completing a unit on writing procedures and were presenting many of the recipes they had researched and made to share with their classmates. They were very excited to see us in our uniforms and we answered many of their questions about hospitality and high school. Overall, it was a fantastic day with lots of laughs and fun memories. This day provided us with an excellent opportunity to experience aspects of the food service and catering industry. It was definitely worthwhile and allowed us to see how much time and effort is involved in planning an event!

We would like to particularly thank Ms Blakers for her correspondence with the primary school and for a lot of the ground work involved with organising the morning tea. Thank you to Mrs Stanley for ordering and shopping for such a big event. Thanks to Ms Blakers, Mrs Larsen and their classes who organised and helped with all the food preparation on Thursday; and to Mrs McKee and Mrs Mills for all their help on the day. We would also like to thank Mrs Maxwell for her assistance on Thursday. Special thanks is needed for the students who effectively worked as a team and demonstrated outstanding food preparation and service skills on the day: Jacqui Chappell, Kayla Messina, Carlie Smith, Sarah Majdoub, Rebecca Lesch, Justine Colyer, Sheridan Merz, Cassie Masina, Natalie Pitkin, and Lauren Mayhew. Thanks also to Mr Clerk for driving us there and back on the day. Teamwork was definitely the key to our success! Lauren Mayhew & Natalie Pitkin

CREATIVE ARTS NEWS

Visual Arts and Photography Exhibition Opening Night: Tuesday 2nd December at 6pm

Our annual Visual Arts exhibition is on this week and we hope that you will come and see your daughter’s work exhibited with the work of her peers in our exhibition. For the students it is the culmination of their work this year and it is important that their work is seen in this more professional context and not just when it makes it home to the fridge door. This year we are fortunate that the exhibition will be officially opened by Tristan Sharp from the Art Gallery of NSW. Tristan is the Senior Coordinator of all Secondary programs at the Art Gallery and has worked with teachers and students extensively and has supported our College at our visits to the Gallery. He has also coordinated ArtExpress at the Gallery and is highly respected in the field of Art Education. The opening night will be on Tuesday, 2nd December at 6pm and we would like you and your parents to come and see the amazing work that has been done by Visual Arts and Photography students this year. Highly commended exhibition prizes will be awarded on the evening. So be there and bring family and friends to this celebration of our Visual Arts and Photography students’ talents. The exhibition is open till 6pm prior to the Music Showcase on Wednesday and until 4pm on Thursday. Students can collect their work on Friday. Mrs Karen King, Creative Arts Coordinator

WRITE A BOOK IN A DAY VICTOR CHANG

HISTORY TV QUIZ SHOW

CAROLINE CHISHOLM COLLEGE

Write A Book In A Day On Tuesday 25th November three teams from Caroline Chisholm College travelled to Westmead Children’s Hospital for a presentation of awards for the Write A Book In A Day Competition. Our Year 11 team was awarded first place for their book entitled “ General Deception”. The judge, who was John Larkin ( author, screenwriter and comedian) said”that from the moment I opened the firstt page I knew straight away that it was very professional”. The excited members of the team were: Amanda Burton, Rachel Ellis, Samantha Evans, Ajita Joshi, Christine Looyschelder Leanne Miller-Basset, Alissa Morada, Larissa Sawagid, Stephanie Valle. The Write A Book In A Day Competition was a fund raiser for the Oncology Children’s Foundation. A Cheque for over $3,000,which was from all the participating schools was presented to Ross Lewis. He gave an enlightening talk about the developments in research, which will save more children, who have cancer. All students who attended the presentation ceremony received a participation certificate and a sumptuous morning tea. I would like to congratulate the members of all the teams who participated in the Write A Book In A Day Competition. It was a difficult task for a team of ten students to write and illustrate a high quality 4,000 word book. Mrs Rhonda Wickes Teacher Librarian Victor Chang Awards On Wednesday 19th September Caroline Chisholm College students Katherine Hyland and Jaclyn Baiada received the Victor Chang Research Institute award at Penrith Council Chambers. Both students will be visiting the institute to investigate first hand the ground breaking work of the Victor

Chang Scientists in their laboratories. Congratulations to both deserving students. Mrs Michelle Cook

History TV Quiz Show Eight students from Year 7 to Year 10 became minor celebrities with their involvement in the History Television Quiz Show entitled Histrionics in November; they had been meeting at lunch time since the beginning of Term to prepare themselves for this event. This Quiz Show was produced by the University of Western Sydney’s Communications department and involved eight schools competing in knock-out rounds. The Caroline Chisholm College team was successful in making it to the Semi Final round after defeating Greystanes High School in a nail biting tie-breaker. The team captains went head-to-head on a question about the Japanese invasion of Manchuria and Bianca Azzopardi’s cool head won the day for our College. The team went down in a close fight with Strathfield Girls’ High School in the semi finals but proved to be a team of expert historians with their knowledge of a variety of historical periods. Sami Joshi and Sarah Thornton in Year 7 looked the part in their Egyptian dress while Kiera Warda of Year 8 demonstrated her understanding of medieval history. Kiera was ably supported in her preparation by Caitlin Bailey, and Rebecca Plummer of Year 9 supported Sylvia Quinlan in her studies of twentieth century Australian history. Bianca’s support came from Clare Decena in Year 10 who helped her prepare for questions on post World War II Australian history. Congratulations to each of these girls on the way they represented the College in their presentation and very gracious manner. Thanks also to friends of these students who attended the filming over two days to provide the required enthusiastic audience support. Histrionics will be aired on TVS (community television) in February 2009.

PIZZAZZ AND ALL THAT JAZZ

YEAR 10 STUDY SKILLS DAY CAROLINE CHISHOLM

COLLEGE

“Pizzazz and All That Jazz” Creative Arts Day

On Thursday 20th November, students from Our Lady of the Way Primary School, St. Joseph’s Primary, St Nicholas of Myra School, Mary McKillop and Bethany Primary School, attended Creative Arts workshops here at the College. Students from years 4, 5 and 6 were nominated to be in either the Drama, Music, Dance or Photography workshop. At the Drama workshop, students explored the Elements of Drama through Circus Theatre and had a great time creating the characters for the animals on parade, kooky clowns, tight rope walkers and flexible acrobats! Dancers showed their multi-styled dancing skills in a Musical Theatre focused workshop. They tapped, break-danced and grooved their way through a High School Musical themed Performance. The Dance students showed enthusiasm and great skill on the day. Music students explored the style of Jazz and Swing on their chosen instruments of guitar, drum kit, keyboard and voice. They doo-wopped their way through the “Doo Doo Canon” and clicked and scatted in “It Don’t Mean A Thing (If It Ain’t Got That Swing). Students got dressed up in Circus attire and took creative photos in the Photography workshop. They used Photoshop to explore different techniques and used different tools to manipulate the photographs. Students created warped images of themselves and added in other circus images to create the final product. Students than used the Dark Room to learn the processes of Dark Room Photography creating a Photogram.

In the afternoon, students presented a Showcase for family and friends from each workshop. The standard was excellent and the performances were highly entertaining. The College would like to thank all students who assisted with the workshops on the day and the following teachers for running the engaging and professional sessions; Mrs Tuting for the Drama Workshop, Miss Latty for Dance, Ms Eyles for Photography with assistance from Mrs King and Ms O’Brien for Music with the assistance of Mr. Caws and Mr. Stevenson. We would also like to thank Ms. Howe, Mr. King and Ms Browning for their support for the day. We look forward to running the workshops again in 2009 which will be advertised through the local Primary Schools. Miss Claire O’Brien Performing Arts Coordinator

Year 10 Study Skills Day Thursday 27th November was one of Year 10's final steps in their transition into senior school. Study Skills Day was a workshop which was designed to prepare Year 10 for the hefty workload ahead and give them tips on goal setting and staying motivated. Rocky and Prue taught us about the effectiveness and importance of study and priority setting in regards to personal goals for the years to come. Prue's session focused on study techniques and what would best suit us as individuals whether it be visual, auditory and kinaesthetic. In this session we were also involved in self evaluation activities such as preparing a realistic study time table for next year and effective study approach. Rocky’s session was based around getting motivated for senior school and overall life success. He taught us about the ultimate success formula and how goal setting is crucial for success in life, he also taught us how to channel our emotions an how we can use negative things in our life as motivation to achieve our best. Year 10 were very privileged to have this Study Skills Day as we are much more prepared and have renewed excitement for next year. Thank you Rocky and Prue for a very beneficial work shop. VET in schools Program Child Care MEGT offers year 11 and 12 students the chance to start studying for a career in child care while still at school. This course is a Board of Studies endorsed program as well as a recognised qualification within the Australian Qualifications Framework. Unlike any other child care training provider, MEGT offer an intensive VET in Schools course during the holiday block period throughout year 11 and 12 which does not disturb the student’s regular curriculum activities. On completion of this course students will receive a Statement of Attainment which will provide an opportunity to continue studies or to work within the children’s services industry. MEGT is a not-for–profit training provider with many partnerships and a wide range of vocational courses and apprenticeships and traineeships on offer, MEGT ensures the transition from school to work is as smooth as possible and suited to individual students.
