GREETINGS FAMILIES AND FRIENDS!Author Neil Gaiman wrote in The Graveyard Book ?If you dare nothing, then when the day is over, nothing is all you will have gained.? His sentiments are at the center of our Learner Profile focus for this month - being Risk Takers.

Taking risks can be scary; however, it we are able to calculate the pros and cons of a risk, we may find that we can push our boundaries and come out on the other side better for it. Now, these risks don?t have to be extravagant like jumping out of a plane or eating the ever dangerous fugu pufferfish. Every day we make choices and some of those choices do involve a fair level of risk - the trick is managing the worries and fear that come along with these choices.

So how do we become better risk takers? Here are some sure fire ways to try out!

- Sit next t o som eone new We can easily fall into the same routines and find security in the same group of friends. One way to push our boundaries is to find a new group of people to interact with. Share your stories and listen to theirs - who knows, you may end up with a new best friend.

- Raise your hand in classWe get it. You don?t want to be wrong. But as Wayne Gretzky once said, ?You miss one hundred percent of the shots you don?t take.? The Great One?s words ring true on the ice and in the classroom. Share those awesome ideas in your head - your classmates will definitely benefit from all that you have to bring to the table.

- Say yesThese three letters can be some of the most empowering to use in the English language. So many times we find ourselves saying ?no? to something new or strange. Try saying yes and going with the flow - you may find a new favorite food in the lunchroom or a new after school class that you love.

Happy holidays!

6TH GRADE - HAPPY NEW YEAR FROM AVID

7TH GRADE - WORDS IN MATH?! WE GOT THIS!

We are looking forward to a great second have of the year. With the end of second quarter fast approaching, we are busy refining our notes and staying organized. The 6th grade students will be working on some creative writing using VTS (Visual Thinking Strategies) in the next few weeks and the 7th and 8th grade students will be

looking at and writing some spoken word using the critical response protocol.

We still have room in our 6th grade 2nd hour and 8th grade 6th hour if you are interested in taking AVID. Please let Ms. Gustafson or Mr. Sanders know if you are interested.

8TH GRADE - MAKE YOUR HIGH SCHOOL CHOICEAttention ALL 8th grade families who live in Minneapolis: Minneapolis High School requests are due for priority placement by February 8t h. Families can complete the High School request form online at: http://schoolrequest.mpls.k12.mn.us/onlinerequest

* Ms. Gustafson is requiring ALL 8th graders who are Minneapolis residents to request a Minneapolis High School for next year, even if they currently are not planning to attend one. Feel free to reach out to Ms. Gustafson with questions at [email protected].

Room 208 wrapped up lessons on adding and subtracting integers right before Winter Break. Now we are heading into multiplying and dividing integers! Positive and negative numbers are no match for our strong thinking skills! Our goal is to be masters of word problems that involve positives and negatives. I challenge you to be a risk taker and attempt to solve one of our word problems! Check in with Ms. Axness in room 208 when you think you've figured it out!

The pr ice of one share of Acm e Com pany declined $5 per day for 4 days in a row. How m uch did t he pr ice of one share change in t ot al af t er t he 4 days?

Sorry friends. Overall be sure to follow the dress code. In the morning during everyone?s advisory you will be having silent reading time. Be sure you wear your comfy clothes on January 23rd! HA LLWA YS & STA IRSTo ensure a smooth flow of traffic in the hallway and stairs during passing time, we put yellow and red tape down the middle of the hallway and stairs throughout the building. The tape will serve as a visual cue to help students remember to walk and stay on the right as they walk from class to class. We'll be spending time reviewing hallway and stair etiquettes to ensure a safe flow of movement.
