===============================================

Regular readers of this Diary will know that Ealing Arts + Leisure has, for many years, championed the idea of an Arts Centre for the Borough. There is continuing discus-sion about the establishment of a “Cultural Quarter” in central Ealing. Meanwhile Land Securities, the Council’s ‘preferred developer’ for the area, is drawing up a scheme which will hopefully include not only a new cinema complex, but also a performance space for music, dance, film, comedy and other arts.

It is good to note that OPEN Ealing has now established itself in its new home at 13 Drayton Green Road where it will continue to offer classes and arts events.

The recent success of the Ealing Music and Film Festival also confirmed, and emphasised the importance of and support for the Arts in Ealing.

The establishment of a Campaign for an Ealing Performance and Arts Centre (CEPAC) also merits the support of readers who value and want to further develop the Arts in the Borough. Please email [email protected] for further information.

Spring sunshine – rather late and only just appearing as I write this – encourages action and thoughts of how to take advantage of what’s on offer over the summer months. I do hope you will come and enjoy many of the exciting events, classes, films, concerts and talks which are described in this issue.

June 27th - July 26thActon Arts ForumMAS TRANSFORMATIONLinked to carnival time in Acton on the 6th JulyThe Mas Transformation concept grew out of experimental and experiential work tak-ing Mas out of its usual context of carnival, and into different arenas. The idea of Mas as a ritualised form is embodied in this exhibition. The repetition of simple move-ments put together creates a ritual, whilst embedding symbolic representation. The exhibition examines Mas as an expression of identity that utilises performance as a means of re-possessing the self. These concepts underlie the audio, visual and per-forming expressions proposed here.Open Tuesday - Saturday 11am - 7 pm and Sunday 12 noon - 4 pm W3 gallery, 185 Acton High Street, W3 9DJ. Thursday June 13thUniversity of West London uwl.ac.uk/plsFROM RESERVOIR TO PETROL PUMP – FLOW MEASUREMENT CHALLENGES IN THE PETROLEUM INDUSTRYThe world’s relentless demand for oil and gas has been a motivation for petroleum companies to continually look for ways to advance oil and gas production techniques. Objectives have included making marginal fields more cost effective, establishing pro-duction facilities in increasingly difficult physical environments, reducing development costs and improving the energy efficiency of new fields. Flow measurement has had an important part to play in all of these. Whether it is measuring multiphase flow rates deep in the reservoir or measuring the flow of a separated gas stream for fiscal purposes, the petroleum sector presents a range of fascinating flow measurements problems. Professor Richard Thorn will discuss how techniques, ranging from those which have been in use since early in the last century to the latest tomographic imaging tech-niques, are being used to meet these challenges.5.30pm for 6pm start.
