Year 9 Update

Term 3 is has come to an end. Well done to all Year 9’s for all your hard work this term.

Students are doing well in their DOJO points, with 9.3 taking the lead as a home group. Students with the highest dojo points for Term 3 will be invited to attend a rewards lunch early next term.

Congratulations to Charlotte Pickering for winning the Year 9 Camp Coin Competition. Charlotte was able to find her birth year on each coin. Charlotte will be attending a ‘Champions Lunch’ along with the top DoJo points scorers of Term 3 and the winning team of the ‘Katherine High School Amazing Race’ in week 4 of Term 4.

As Term 4 approaches, plans for the Year 9 end of year student dinner are beginning to take place. Students wishing to attend need to ensure they have good attendance and behaviour.

Have a safe week Year 9. See you all in Term 4.

Lawn Bowl Championships

Lauren Kingsley (Year 11) is currently in Adelaide representing the Northern Territory at the U18s Lawn Bowls Championships. Out of a squad of 5, she is the only girl chosen from NT, with the other places being filled by Western Australian and South Australian players. This is Lauren’s fifth year at the Championships where she hopes to achieve a personal best. If you are interested in playing Lawn Bowls, you can contact Bronwyn Chandler (0439 823 369), or the Katherine Country Club for details.

RoboCup Junior

Competition

On the September 2 the Year 7 STEM class travelled to Darwin to attend the first RoboCup Junior competition for the NT. We had teams entered in both the Dance and the Rescue Challenges. Our dance teams competed well and received good feedback from the judges, while our rescue teams participated in a workshop and learnt a lot about the different ways they can program their robots. It was a long but very worthwhile day and it was great to see what other schools and students are doing with robotics. We have already started talking about how we can make our robots bigger and better for next year! Zaiga Thomann Maths Faculty [email protected]

Tournament of the Minds

In Term 3 a group of 12 students prepared for and competed in the Tournament of the Minds

competition. The students met once a week for six weeks to prepare entries for both the Science

and Technology, and Language and Literature competitions.

Science and Technology Team

The Science team had to come up with a scenario in which a terrible catastrophe had befallen them

and they needed to receive and send a coded message. Their entry involved a coded message in the

form of flags and a location given by latitude and longitude. Their message was delivered by a drone

which they amazingly managed to make fly!

Language and Literature Team

The Language and Literature team were given the task of ‘Guest Who’. Incorporating particular food

and guests from a range of poems, novels, short stories or picture books. The team came up with a

play exploring the complex nature of humanity, and how something as simple as food can tell a lot

about who a person is. The students also then competed in a Spontaneous Challenge, and received

some excellent feedback regarding their teamwork, as well as their ability to think outside the box.

The competition

We drove up to Darwin on September 16 and stayed at Casuarina Senior College. That night

students practiced their performances and made last minute prop adjustments to ensure they were

ready. The next day their performances were first up. They got great feedback from the judges, with

the Language and Literature team excelling in the Spontaneous Challenge, and the Science team

getting great feedback for their performance and drone. Once the performances ended the rest of

the morning was spent observing other teams and exploring the university campus. Some of the

performances were absolutely amazing and students got a lot of ideas for next year!!

A big thanks to Mr Strachan, Ms Gill and Ms Witte for all the time and effort they put into supporting

our teams.

Stars Foundation Updates

On September 26 Darwin-based singer/

songwriter Tracey Bunn came to deliver a

workshop to a small group of aspiring Stars

singers. The girls learnt about song structure

and performance techniques. With

encouragement, the girls performed a song

for Tracey, and are now in the process of

writing a song as a collective to perform for us

in the near future! It was amazing to see the

girls respond, build their confidence, and

show off their natural talent and ability.

Stage 1 Outdoor Education

During week 9, Stage 1 Outdoor Education students undertook their

first practical experience. Developing skills in bushwalking, lightweight

travel and minimal impact principles, the Katherine High School

students walked a portion of the Table Top Track in Litchfield National

Park. While ending the first leg of the journey drenched, nothing could

dampen the spirits of the students who collaborated, supported and

worked incredibly well together to complete the 3 day walk which

incorporated swimming, camping and off-track navigation activities.

Thankyou to all of the students and staff involved in making this

experience possible.
