Issue 13 Update 2013
On Wednesday, March 13th, a Freshman Outreach Scavenger Hunt was held in McAllan Hall for all freshmen (rising sophomores) who have been declared as education majors. The event was coordinated by three of our SOE Undergraduate Advisory Council members: Meaghan Brandt, Kelly Coulson, and Sarah Meyer.
The program provided students with an opportunity to get to know the building, locations of classrooms, the different advisors, and staff as well as offices in the building. They achieved this within the first half of the program with a scavenger hunt designed to have the students find faculty members and ask questions about the SOE. The next part of the program split the students into two groups to have open discussion with professors and upperclassman in regards to topics they need to be aware of as an education major.
The event was a huge success and the students were able to gain insight while having an enjoyable time. Not only was valuable information learned, but students seemed much more comfortable and familiar with everyone in the building. They also became more conscious of who they could talk to if
Freshman Outreach Scavenger Hunt
On Wednesday, April 24th, the Undergraduate Advisory Council held a Celebration of Standard Based Projects throughout the hallways and classrooms of McAllan Hall. This event was held to celebrate the hard work of the education students and to inspire undergraduate students currently working on their projects. The Advisory Council put together an array of projects ranging from centers, webquests, Prezi presentations, Behavior Intervention Plans, Individualized Education Plans, lesson plans, thematic units, and SmartBoard activities. Projects from all contents and grade levels were on display. Students who attended had the ability to use the technology being showcased and manipulate the centers to gain a better understanding of the projects. There was also a raffle for gift certificates to the MU bookstore or Aramark.
The School of Education would like to thank the student volunteers who coordinated this event: Kelly Coulson, Meaghan Brandt, Alexandra McMahon, Billy Davison, and Sarah Meyer.

Mayors’ Book Club Inspires and Rewards Young Readers
The Central Jersey Consortium for Excellence and Equity (CJCEE), held their eighth workshop “Voices of our Diverse Student Leaders: Identifying Promising Strategies for Closing the Achievement Gap” at Monmouth University’s Rebecca Stafford Student Center in Anacon Hall. Dr. Tina Paone, chair of the School of Education’s Educational Leadership, School Counseling, and Special Education department and associate professor of counseling, coordinated the event in which 88 middle and high school students from local school districts participated. These districts included Asbury Park, Eatontown, Hazlet Township, Keansburg, Keyport, Long Branch, Matawan-Aberdeen Regional, Middletown Township, Red Bank Charter School, and Red Bank Regional High School.
The Central Jersey Consortium for Excellence
and Equity (CJCEE), entering its 2nd year, is an evolving collaboration of administrators,
teachers, support staff, parents, and elementary and secondary students that are collectively
committed to learning and working together to enhance the achievement and well-being of all
students, as well as increasing the academic per-formance, engagement, and future success of
traditionally underachieving students.
The Central Jersey Consortium for Excellence and Equity
Mount Arlington Mayor Art Ondish, President of the New Jersey League of Municipalities Educational Foundation, joined Host Mayor Gerry Tarantolo of Eatontown on May 30, to honor the accomplishments of the first grade students at the Margaret L. Vetters School. Celebrating months of learning and enjoyment, under the auspices of the Mayors’ Book Club, the Mayors were joined by Monmouth University School of Education Dean Lynn Romeo. Dean Romeo had guided faculty, administrators, and undergraduate teacher education candidates to promote engagement, interest, and wide reading and writing for first grade students in selected schools, sponsored by local Mayors.
The following schools were chosen and participated in the 2013 Mayors’ Book Club: James A. McDivitt Elementary School, Old Bridge Township; James J. Flynn School, Perth Amboy; Margaret L. Vetter Elementary School, Eatontown; Middle Road School, Hazlet Township; Drum Point Elementary School, Brick Township; and Nellie F. Bennett Elementary School, Point Pleasant. All of the participating first grades exceeded the 1,000 book goal and were awarded $1,000 each to be spent on books for their first-grade classroom libraries. The Mayor's Book Club is designed to support and enhance the literacy development of first graders. The students participating in the program must read a total of eight books over a four-month period starting in January and will have the opportunity to be read to by a special guest reader, their own Mayor. Each student who participates in the program will receive a book at the conclusion of the program. In addition, the participating first grades in each school that have read at least 1,000 books will be given $1,000 to be spent on books for their first-grade classroom libraries.
