At any one time, all schools, including GK, have quite a number of students that fit this disability definition. NATIONALLY CONSISTENT COLLECTION OF DATA ON

SCHOOL STUDENTS WITH DISABILITY

We are required to inform our GK community that in 2015, all schools in Australia, including Independent and Catholic schools, will participate in the Nationally Consistent Collection of Data on School Students with Disability.

The Data Collection is an annual count of the number of students receiving educational adjustments to support their participation in education. Adjustments might include any of the following across all educational settings such as the classroom and whole school settings as well as at the individual student level:-

• developing individual plans made for a student’s learning or behaviour • adapting teaching practices delivered to better engage a student • offering different curriculum options to better engage a student • modifying how a student is assessed • keeping reports or records of the teaching / learning adjustments being made • modifying environment and infrastructure including addressing physical barriers to ensure access to buildings and services.

According to the Disability and Discrimination Act 1992, the term disability refers to people who may have impaired functioning, but also those who may have full function with conditions such as mild allergies, physical sensitivities, temporary impaired hearing, wear glasses etc. which can affect learning at different periods of time. At any one time, all schools, including GK, have quite a number of students that fit this disability definition.

All education agencies are now required, under the Australian Education Regulation 2013, to provide information on a student’s level of education, disability and level of adjustment to the Australian Government Department of Education and Training.* Data from schools will continue to be de-identified prior to its transfer to the Australian Government. No GK student’s identity will be provided as a school is only obliged to report the number of students, not names of students, who have received some educational adjustments (as described above) this year.

The collection of this information from states and territories is intended to inform future policy and program planning in relation to students receiving educational adjustments to support their participation in education. For this reason, it is mandatory for all schools to report on the number of students who for one reason or another, require some type of adjustment to support their learning.

If you have any questions about the data collection, then please contact our Engagement/Wellbeing Coordinator Shirley O’Neill on 9431 1599 or the Victorian Department of Education and Training Data Collection Hotline on (03) 9651 3621. For questions after 7 August 2015, please call the Australian Government Department of Education and Training on 1300 566 046.

Community Garden – help yourself!! It has been lovely getting a stream of visitors com-

ing through the gates every morning and afternoon

to say hello to the chooks (and me)! I welcome eve-

ryone to come down and have a look at our commu-

nity garden area if you have the chance.

I have put up a new noticeboard on the side of the science room where

current news, events and announcements will be written.

Also, around the corner near our ‘Recycling Centre’ we have a plant sale

shelf. There is a plastic container there for any purchases you might

make. Money can also be placed here for any herbs you take from the

garden – remember it’s everyone’s garden!!

LOTS OF PARSLEY at the moment so please – come and take some for

tabbouli etc!! Just pick as much as you need and leave a gold coin dona-

tion in the container.

All proceeds are returned into the garden program. (Remember eggs are

in the staffroom for purchase too!)

Happy gardening – keep cosy! Mrs Webb

Coming to GK in June …

A MULTICULTURAL

CELEBRATION

Dear Parents,

The students at Glen Katherine Primary School are fortunate enough to attend a school that celebrates cultural diversity and en-courages students to be responsible global citizens.

In accordance with this, we will be having a “Multicultural Celebration” for all children from Prep to Year 6 on Thursday June 4th, 2015 (Week 8). This day’s main events are: Dress up Day: All children are to come dressed up on this day in a “Multicultural costume”. It may be from their own

heritage or a culture that they especially relate to. It may be simply a character / famous person linked to a spe-cific culture / heritage, heritage costume or flag colours!

Cultural Infusion Incursion: A former Chinese acrobat from the Nanjiing Acrobatic Troupe will be demonstrating her skills in acrobatics, plate spinning, balancing and ribbon dancing. Students from Prep to Year 6 will attend one of three performances. (… providing that incursion payment/s have been received on or before the due date.)

Bush Dancing: Conducted by David Blackburn.

Italian Folk Dancing: Conducted by Sandra Portaro.

Shared Multicultural Activities: Activities will be organised and implemented by the class and specialist teachers for their allocat-ed multi-age group (combination of students from Prep to Year 6).

Whole School Assembly: Costume parade at 2.15 pm to celebrate and reflect on GK’s cultural diversity. Parents are welcome to attend the Assembly.

NOTE: The canteen will provide a special lunch order menu for Thursday 4th June. A separate note for lunch orders

will follow.
