BONDURANT FAMILY ASSOCIATION2016 MEETING MINUTES

Friday, October 21-Saturday, October 22, 2016Hampton Inn 1511 USAA Drive, Norfolk, VA

Friday night’s meeting which was to start at 7:00 pm actually started with an impromptu gathering in the breakfastreception area of the hotel. It was a warm area with chairs and tables in which several Bondurants sat down andtalked. By the time the actual Meet Your Kin started we all were familiar with the new attendees and hadsocialized with the prior members. The Meet Your Kin started by introductions from all. There were 16 present. We all introduced ourselves, wherewe are from, how and why we are all here. Kim and Ray Campbell were also at the meeting. Kim is a genealogistwho has completed several genealogy books and teaches classes in genealogy. She contributed to answering someresearch questions.

New members Annie Smith and her mother Gloria Smith came from Michigan to the meeting. She introducedherself and had many questions about the family and research. Kim being a genealogist teacher and researcherunderstands brick walls and listed all the other places that could be researched to complete information lost bythe “burned out” counties, such as church records, legal records in other counties. sales of land, special collectionsin libraries, Bibles, and many more places. Kim also suggested that Annie ask everywhere she goes if there areany “special collections” in their library. Annie asked who traveled the longest to the meeting, in which Davidsaid Colorado and I said California. She came from Michigan. Stan Bondurant brought some of his cousin’sBondurant Moonshine to see and taste. Bobby and Judy brought some of their delicious orchard apples to share. The meet and greet ended around 9:30.

Saturday’s business meeting started at 9:00 am and was called to order by Marcelle Hoffman. She introducedherself and other officers present: David Bondurant, web master. She explained that other board members, V. P.Michael Salzburg-Felts; Treasurer: Amy Warren Sanders; Secretary: Mary Bondurant Warren; newsletter editor:Eve B. Mayes were absent because of illness or new employment. There was a sigh of regret among the group. Marcelle Hoffman welcomed all those who came and reminded them to sign in and inscribe their badges. Lastyear (2105) meeting’s minutes were read by the president. Motion to approve was led by Judy Bondurant and allwere approved. The Treasurer’s report was read by the president. Tom Bondurant motioned to approve; the reportwas voted on and approved by the group. Projects: 1. DNA project reports were deferred until next year because Amy and Evewere not present.

2. The Jean Pierre Bondurant gravesite was discussed. It was mentioned byMarcelle Hoffman that Shalon Bondurant Jarrell used to care for the JPB site, but now no one is available to care for it. Bruce Ramsdell, MD, and MarvinWhite said they had just visited the site and found it in relatively goodcondition. There were magnolia leaves within the closure, but the vines werenot overgrown. They said they would be willing to approach the owners of thehouse to see if the occupants were interested in taking care of the site for us.They brought up the idea of giving a donation to the family for their work. Atone time there was a donation given to the prior family for the care of thegravesite. The group discussed that idea and asked that Bruce and Marvin seewhat they could do to include the family in the care of the gravesite.

1. Facebook: Marcelle Hoffman said there were two Bondurant/Bundurant sites on Facebook. The Bondurantsite grew from 378 to 414 members and the Bundurant site grew from 180 to 185 members. Marcelle Hoffmansaid she would investigate if there were any other family groups online that could provide a connection to theBondurants to increase the BFA membership and the Bondurant interest, such as Tanner, Moseley familyconnections.

2. Website report was given by David Bondurant. He has instituted bill pay with membership online. All thearchived letters are posted online on the site in which can be researched. David will look into the problems thatthe server or hosting site has with the BFA website and will report at the next meeting. Expenses:1. Referring to the prior reading of the treasurer’s report we voted and approved the costs for Eve Mayes tocontinue the newsletter and the same costs going to Eve that went to Mary Warren when she was writing andsending the newsletters.

2. Other expenses were the meeting room at this year’s event, which cost $250.00. It was noted by MarcelleHoffman that there were donations given to supplement the meeting cost and that the BFA was paying for thedifference. She also said that donations can continue to be given to BFA for memorials or birthdays that wouldkeep our costs down for these meetings. David Bondurant noted that the budget is finally in the black after manyyears losing money from mailings and other expenses. This is because of the electronic mailings and the fewerpostal mailings. We encouraged those donations. Elections: It was mentioned that our next meeting will bring on new officers. The officer positions were re-readand Marcelle said that in the next few newsletters there will be postings of any positions open for voting in 2017. Meetings: Marcelle Hoffman mentioned that there has been a suggestion to change the bylaws to have meetingsevery other year. There was little interest in that subject and it was tabled.

She also brought up a meeting space for next year 2017 which is to be held outside of Virginia. Somesuggested cities include Memphis, TN, Melbourne, FL, Denver, CO, St. Petersburg/Tampa, FL, Newnan, GA,and New Orleans, LA. The board will vote on the site for next year’s meeting which will be announced in a futurenewsletter. If you have a suggestion for a location, or would be interested in hosting or helping with a meeting, please email your editor [email protected].

Before David Bondurant’s talk on Norfolk, Marcelle Bondurant reminded the group of the dinner time change& reservations, membership payments and the other areas of the city to visit in the afternoon: Nauticus/Wisconsinship; Moses-Myers house; Willoughby House; Victorian Museum. Several of the group discussed meeting forlunch and then going out from there. Some also are visiting Yorktown. Marcelle Bondurant thanked Bobby andJudy again for the apples and Stan and Pete for the moonshine. Hampton Roads – Yesterday and Today: This year David W. Bondurant presented importance of the naval basein Norfolk, VA, during the WWII. He talked about the ships leaving the area and the different Bondurants thatwere in the city during the war. His presentation included photos of the port and his Bondurant family He alsospoke of his father William George Bondurant meeting Mary Warren Bondurant’s father, John Parnell BondurantII, who was on his way to Algeria; and of taking Joan Bondurant on a tour of Williamsburg before she embarkedfor India with the OSS. Richmond Times-Dispatch (VA) - Saturday, January 3, 2015

This more complete obituary gives us answers to some of our questions from the test case above, but we will haveto go to other online resources to get all of them!

1. Who were her parents? Russell Randolph and Elsie Leona Miller Bondurant. Her siblings were John,Elizabeth, Russell, David and Virginia Bondurant.

2. When was she born? Obit says she was 54 at the time of her death, so she was born about 1960. (Guesswe’ll have to keep looking for more definitive information! Where would YOU look?)

On Find-a-grave.com, her memorial (#140797171) only gives 1960 as the date of her birth. OnAncestry, in the VA Marriage Records 1936-2014, the license for her first marriage to David BruceCousins gives her birth date as 28 Nov 1960.

3. Where did she go to college? She graduated from Rappahannock Community College with an associate’sdegree in arts and sciences with a specialization in business administration in 2012. While in college, she was a proud member of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society.

4. When and where did she get married? Dennis E. Shiflett was her husband at the time of her death, butshe also had a son named Brandon Paul Cousins. Did she marry someone named Cousins first? We don’tknow when or where she married, either.

So ... on Ancestry, we find a marriage license for Martha Lee Bondurant and Dennis Edward Shiflett 23Sep 2006 in New Kent County, Virginia [VA Marriage Records 1936-2015]. Also from the same source,we find that she married David Bruce Cousins 20 Sep 1986 in Henrico County, Virginia. This licensegives her parents’ names and her full birth date, as well as for her husband. The VA Divorce Records1918-2014 says she and David Cousins were divorced 20 Dec. 1994 in Henrico County, Virginia.

5. Did she have any children? The only one who survived her is Brandon Paul Cousins. Did she haveothers? No other mention of children by either of her husbands has been found.

Eileen M. Bondurant Sept. 22, 1921 - Sept. 26, 2016

Eileen Bondurant died September 26, 2016, in Everett, WA, at age 95. She was bornin a log house on Big Mountain above Whitefish, MT, to parents Charles and HannahBengtson. Eileen was the youngest of ten children and a real country child, spendingher summers on a horse herding her father’s dairy cows as they grazed along theroads near their small ranch. Yet she participated in High School activities, went todances, performed in musicals and even took ballet lessons. She met a Kalispell, MT,boy, Frank Bondurant, called Bill in those days, and married him in 1938. Therefollowed two daughters, then Frank’s being drafted in 1944, a move to Everett whereshe worked briefly at Boeing, then his return from the Philippines in 1946. After thatthey settled in the Pinehurst neighborhood, had two sons, and were active in the

community and Roosevelt School PTA. In the early 1950’s Eileen and her husband began to study the Bible with Jehovah’s Witnesses and both were

baptized in 1954. Their faith-based activities became the center of their lives. Her children will always value herintegrity, her strong faith, her sense of humor and, of course, her loving care. That love led her to help othersoutside the family, teaching them in home Bible studies, visiting people in nursing homes, and sticking up for theunderdog. Once when her daughter told about the harassment of a girl in Junior High, she went to the school toinform the principal, and they took action to stop it. When neighbors were upset at the possibility of a blackfamily moving in, Eileen told them that she had black neighbors during the war and they were the nicest neighbors

Charlene Mize, ‘the face of The Beacon,’ dies at age 90Published Thursday, October 13, 2016, The Oxford Eagle

Oxford lost an icon when Charlene Mize, a longtime business owner of TheBeacon restaurant, passed away at the age of 90 on Wednesday.

Originally born in Taylor, Mize opened The Beacon at 1200 N. LamarBoulevard with her husband, James Flem Mize, in April 1959. After herhusband’s passing, Charlene remained a stalwart figure behind the restaurant’scash register. Flem and Charlene’s son, Tony Mize, is the current owner of theestablishment.

Tony Mize said in a message on The Beacon’s Facebook page that therestaurant, which has been open for 56 years, will be closed for the next fewdays.

“Mrs. Charlene Mize passed away early this morning,” Tony wrote onWednesday. “I will post more information as I know it. Please remember theMize Family in your prayers.”

Oxford Mayor Pat Patterson says he can’t remember being alive withoutMize being in his life. Tony and Patterson were friends growing up and

Patterson remembers running in out of Mize’s home and called the entire Mize family, “life-long friends.”“Oxford has lost an icon and one sweet lady,” Patterson said. “We shall all miss her greatly.” Her passing is

felt throughout the Oxford community.“She was basically the face of The Beacon,” Dick Marchbanks, a regular customer at the restaurant, said. “She

took care of business, was friendly to the customers and made you feel welcome. And that’s something that’sgoing to be missed.”

Ed Meek, the namesake of Ole Miss’ Meek School of Journalism and New Media, says that Charlene wasat The Beacon for as long as he can remember. “There’s no telling how many times she rang up that cashregister,” Meek said. “She was always there with a smile and she always knew who you were. She will long beremembered, there’s no doubt about that.”

The funeral service for Charlene Mize will be on Friday, at 11 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Oxford.
