Felicity, Kim and James Roberts The day before James Roberts’ third birthday, where all he asked for was two black googly eyed fish and a helicopter ride, he fell down a step. What should have been a normal scrape for a toddler, turned into a surreal nightmare for his mum Kim, her partner Matt & sister Felicity. Transferred from Eugowra hospital to Orange Base with quick response from the Child Flight helicopter, James underwent emergency surgery before being flown to Sydney Children’s Hospital, Randwick. On his arrival, the nurses said that the flight went well and that he was a little fighter, he had a long way to go but he was holding in. Two days after his fall, James was trying to breathe on his own so the doctors removed his breathing tube. After a large seizure, James had to have his breathing tube replaced and the doctors said if they had to put a time frame on James’ survival, it would be days not weeks. A couple of days after replacing the ventilator, James showed small signs of breathing himself. By the end of that week, he was showing all the signs of waking up again. James was moved out of ICU into a ward 14 days after admission where intense physiotherapy began, and he has since started occupational and speech therapy to learn all his basic skills again. After undergoing all of this, and multiple incidents of head surgery, James has remained a happy little boy with so much spirit and determination. James will be discharged from the Children’s Hospital by the end of this month and back home in Canowindra sometime in July. DAROO BUSINESS AWARD FINALISTS Canowindra business people have dominated the list of finalists for Cabonne Council’s Daroo Business Awards which will be announced this month. No fewer than 14 Canowindra businesses are among the 37 throughout Cabonne Shire who have been recognised for their business excellence, while half the six individual finalists come from Canowindra. Jackie Cramp from Falls Hair Beauty Spa, Alison Beasley, of the Old Vic Inn and the Age of Fishes Museum manager Fiona Ferguson are all vying for individual awards. And all three businesses are also finalists, joining the Canowindra Phoenix, Gaskill Greens, Balloon Joy Flights, Deli Lama, taste Canowindra, the Canowindra Trading Post, Tom’s Waterhole Wines, the Shearing Shed Hair and Beauty Salon, Comprinting, David Bigg Accountancy and Bendy Street Emporium. The finalists were selected from more than 240 nominations in what has been one of the most of the most competitive judging processes since the awards were established in 2000. Judges praised the quality of the entries and were highly impressed with the standard of the finalists in a variety of categories ranging from excellence in retail to community contributions and excellence in education and training. The awards will be announced at a gala dinner at Cumnock Showground on Friday 18 June. Cabonne Mayor Kevin Duffy said the exceptional support showed how highly-prized the Daroo Awards had become. ‘’The judging turned out to be a very long day both because of the number of entries and the high standard of the businesses involved,’’ Cr Duffy said. Former International Entrepreneur of the Year Justin Herald will be the guest speaker at the awards dinner. One of Australia’s best known business and personal development authors, Mr Herald has written seven best-selling books and has been named as one of the most influential leaders of Australia’s next generation. He started his business Attitude Inc. with only $50 and turned it into a multi-million dollar empire. Cr Duffy said the organising committee was delighted to secure such an inspirational and motivated speaker to address the cream of Cabonne’s business people.

PHYSIO STUDENTS ENJOYING COUNTRY LIFE Canowindra Health Service has recently welcomed two 4th year physiotherapy students, Mary Ann Tay and Vivien Koh. Both girls have completed three years of their physiotherapy training in Singapore, and are doing their final year at Sydney University to earn their Degree before returning to Singapore. The girls have enjoyed the wide variety of work Canowindra has to offer. They have been treating a variety of musculoskeletal problems like sore backs and sporting injuries, running some of the exercise groups, treating inpatients, and educating staff about manual handling. Both Mary and Vivien have embraced the social side of life too. They have been shearing where they actually had a go with help from the shearers, and plan to go to Pony Club this weekend. Both girls were very impressed with the Billican production and had a good laugh. They have also seen the horses and carts at Gooloogong on their way to the Henry Lawson Festival, and enjoyed dinners at restaurants and at locals’ homes. “They would like to ride in a tractor that has higher wheels than they stand, so we are working on that at the moment!” said Physiotherapist Ashley Wright “It’s great to see them having fun as well as working hard to improve their physio skills” Thank you to everyone who has made them feel welcome and helped them experience the many great things rural life has to offer.

POPULAR TIGER RETURNS After an eight year absence, one of Canowindra’s most popular and most talented sportsman has returned to the rugby league fold. It was with great delight to Tigers supporters, Tim Kennedy ran onto Tom Clyburn oval on Sunday in his favoured number six jersey against the Koorawatha Jets. Not since the Tigers played in the 2002 Grand final has Kennedy laced up his Rugby League boots. He ventured away for work at one stage, returned to be a major player in Canowindra Cricket Club’s first grade team, and had a stint with the Canowindra Pythons in their brief foray in Blowes Cup Rugby. Tim’s return on Sunday was low key and very conservative as he found his feet in the early stages, a couple of clean passes to his talented centres Butler and O’Malveney. The Tigers were away and so was Kennedy. Once again Canowindra raced out of the blocks to lead 28-0 at the half time break. When Rob Burn scored immediately after halftime the Tigers led 34-0 and it appeared it was going to be one way traf-fic in the second half. The Jets had other ideas and scored three long range tries in succession to close the gap to 34-16 before the Tigers kicked on wrapping up the match 46-16 and keeping their home record intact. All the players performed well, with Dan Walker and Kepu Nathan once again standouts. Canowindra 46 (Kepu Nathan 2, Rob Burn 2, Dave Bermingham, Sam O’Malveney, Brian Moss, Phil Butler tries Rob Burn 7 Goals) def Koorawatha 16. OPEN JUNIORS This top of the table clash did not disappoint. The Roosters dominated all the possession in the first half and went to the break leading 20-4. The Tigers tried hard but couldn’t click in the early stages. After a refreshing talk by Coach Andrew Whatman the Tigers found that extra gear in the second half. The Tigers clawed back the score to 20-18, and look like pulling off a remarkable comeback but the Roosters defence held till the fulltime siren with the score remaining Roosters 20 def Tigers 18 (Luke Watt, Josh Cooney, Aaron Earsman, Kain Earsman tries Stuart Scott 1 goal).

RUGBY PYTHONS The Canowindra Pythons travelled to Orange last Saturday to take on the Barbarians, wanting to win and also gain a bonus point by scoring 4 tries. This wasn’t to be an easy task as we had 9 out through injuries or personal commitments, it was going to be a test of our character and depth. We had a few of our stalwarts, the young brigade and two veterans whose combined age was 90 years. The boys came to the fore, performing as an unit, and led 28-0 at the break, before running away with the game winning 73-0. The forwards led by the veterans Peter Stacey and Rob Clulow, together with Jimmy Wythes laid the platform which enabled the loose forwards in Sam and Joe Wythes, Daniel Bowd, Brodie Friend, Nigel Knight, Clint Oborn and Matthew Farley to make many inroads up the middle. This gave the halves Lloyd Jackson and Aaron Wooley time to set the backs up for 8 out of 11 tries. Tries were scored by Luke Watt 3, and 1 each to Sam O’Malveney, Aaron Wooley, Lachlan Noble, Shaun Wyburn, Todd Wyburn, Daniel Bowd, Joe Wythes and Clint Oborn. Aaron had a successful day with the boot kicking 9 goals. Best and Fairest points went to: Lachlan Noble 3, Daniel Bowd 2, Clint Oborn and veteran Rob Clulow 1 each (Rob played for over 60 minutes straight) well done mate. Aaron Wooley had a great game and was voted Players Player. Next week is a much needed general bye.

CLASSIFIEDS
