PLANNED ACTIVITY GROUP news
.....spending 2 nights in Camperdown, where everyone had a great holiday. Bearing in mind “What happens on holidays, stays on holi-
days”. This year we discovered many new places of interest in the Colac and Camperdown area. After leaving Balmoral we headed to
Warrnambool to catch the train and travel to Colac by train, this was an experience that many have not enjoyed for years. After arriv-
ing in Colac, they was a short wait for the bus (As I got held up waiting for our lunch at the Bakery). Everyone enjoyed lunch and then
we had a tour of the Colac and Red Rock Volcanic Reserve. Then we headed to Camperdown to unpack at the Cascade Motel before
going to the Commercial Hotel for dinner that evening. We were met at the hotel by 10
local Rotary members, this proved an interesting night talking and learning about the area.
We met up with many of these members again during our stay in Camperdown in the dif-
ferent places we visited; they were either working or being tour guides.
After enjoying a great night’s sleep we were ready to attack the day at Camperdown.
Places we visited included the Heritage Centre, The Clock Tower, Robert Burns Statue,
Benedictine Abbey, Botanic Gardens, Mt Leura- Mt Sugarloaf Reserves. Then we returned
to the Motel for a much needed rest before heading out for dinner again, this time at the
Hampden Hotel, for another excellent meal.
Day 3, you would wonder what else could we fit into this holiday away, but there was
more! Packed and ready to go after a full cooked breakfast we travelled to a local farm
that had English Highland cattle. These cattle have very long hairy coats and the calves
look like teddy bears. Back on the road again, we headed to Glenormiston Estate. During
the tour of the Homestead we were able to admire the magnificent wood carvings by
Robert Prenzel (Robert also did wood carving work in the Anglican Church at Balmoral).
With the tour over, it was time for lunch before heading back to Balmoral, the end of a
very interesting and fun trip away, and everyone ready for a much needed rest.
“A friend is one who believes
in you when you have ceased
to believe in yourself”.
The RACV presentation, “Years ahead
driver safety for Seniors”, covered:
Road safety tips
Road rules
Passenger & Pedestrian
safety and lots more.......
It was a very informative day.

LIVE ACTIVE news SPRING INTO EXERCISE
After a long winter of reduced activity or inactivity you might be tempted to get outside and train as soon as the weather improves. You may also be tempted to exercise at the same level you did at the end of the last season. But such enthusiasm often leads to early season injuries. If you changed your routine for the winter, you need to get back into shape slowly. Here are some tips for avoiding sports injuries as you increase your exercise this spring.
1. Slow but steady: Don’t succumb to the weekend warrior syndrome. Try to get some exercise 3-4 times per
week on alternate days. One of the best ways to get injured or sore is to go hard all weekend and do nothing during the week.
2. Monitor your level of exertion: Use the perceived exertion scale, the talk test, or the heart rate range to help you determine an appropriate intensity level. Stay at the lower end of the scale (11-13) and build up over several weeks.
3. Increase your training slowly: Increasing training (mileage, time or amount of weight lifted) more than 10 percent per week increases your risk of injury. To avoid this, increase your training gradually over the weeks.
4. Don’t exercise in pain: As you get back to training in the spring, you may have some minor muscle aches and soreness. But if you have any sharp, unusual pain, or a soreness that doesn't go away, pay attention. You may be on the way to an injury. It's important to listen to the warning signs of an injury.
5. Cross Train: Varying your workouts can improve help you performance and reduce risk of overuse injuries. By participating in a variety of different activities, such as running, weight training, hiking, bootcamp classes or biking, you limit the stress on one specific muscle group because different activities use muscles in slightly
different ways.
6. Avoid all out efforts until you build a solid base of fitness: Depending upon how much inactivity you had over the winter, it could take as long as 6 weeks to re-establish a solid fitness base. Start your exercise program with slow, steady aerobic sessions. When you add intervals or all-out efforts, make sure you allow enough rest and recovery (at least 48 hours) between those hard effort training days.
7. Follow a training program and keep records: If you really want to build back up to optimal fitness, it
helps to establish a training plan and stick with it.
8. Cut yourself some slack: If you took the winter off, don't expect to be back to peak fitness in a week or two. It's ok to go slow and just enjoy being outside again. There's plenty of summer left, so don't worry about going a bit slower in the beginning.
9. Train with others at your fitness level: If you can find a few people with the same fitness level and goals as you, it can help kept you progressing at a good pace.
10. Create a support team: Having a strong support system, made up of friends, family, a coach or a strong
team is an important part of becoming a successful athlete. Spring training is an essential time to turn to your closest allies for motivation.
And Don't Forget to Have Fun! Keep in mind that Spring Training is a time for fun, light-hearted exercise. You aren't competing, and you aren't burnt out yet. So just relax and enjoy your activity.

news EARLY LEARNING CENTRE
This month at the Balmoral Early Learning Centre.... With the weather warming up we have been able to have some quality time outside.
The children have been busy helping to get our garden up and running again. We decided to revamp one of our garden beds with a new veggie garden in one-half
and a fairy garden in the other half.
In the veggie garden are planting snow peas, cherry tomatoes and carrots. In the fairy garden, we hope to create a magical play space
for the children to create, imagine and explore. Each day we will put out a box of special fairies and elves, miniature tables and chairs and any other little accessories
we can find for the children to create their own little magical world.
We have also planted sunflowers, and marigold plants in another bed. (However, to our surprise, the marigold plants looked oh so
tasty to some little creature and they gobbled them all up.)
I would like to send a big thank you out to all the people that have helped us out with
plants, manure and their hard work. It is greatly appreciated. (Learning: Uses senses to explore natural environments.)
(Community: Demonstrates knowledge and respect for natural and constructed environments.)
With the children’s continuing interest in cooking we decided bake some scones last week. The children really enjoyed getting right in amongst the flour to create some more delicious food.
(Learning: Experiences the benefits and pleasures of shared learning
exploration.)
If you are interested in booking your child into care on Mondays or
Fridays this year or in 2014, please give me a call on 0448 980 027 for
more information.
