Upcoming From our Principal… It’s the end of Semester One already and we have had a great first half of the year with many activities and highlights around the College. These included Cross Country, Swimming Carnival, Camps, Excursions, Gala Days, District Sports, HPV in Bundaberg, a visit from Lutheran Youth Queensland, a visit from our Mayor George Seymour and many more. Last week it was wonderful to see so many of our families gather to support their children in the Athletics Carnivals from Prep to Secondary. Congratulations to McKenzie for Secondary and Eli for Primary on their wins, and to all our students for their participation. Thank you to all our staff for making it an amazing three days of sporting fun for the students and all your hard work and effort running the events. The College met again recently with the Fraser Coast Regional Council, Local Council Representative and the Principal from Bayside College, Nola Ensby to discuss the future planning for Pantlins Lane and Urraween Road to relieve traffic congestion. In the short term there will be yellow lines marked on Pantlins Lane to stop parking on the side of the road and traffic build up. The College Chapel carpark will be restricted to left hand turn in and left hand turn out manoeuvres only. Please see the map below. The Council has provided a Fact Sheet outlining the short and long-term planning for Pantlins Lane and this will be shared with our community in the next week. Thank you for your patience and understanding, as the council works to alleviate some congestion and improve safety. I would like to wish all our students and families a safe and happy holiday and look forward to seeing you in Term 3. God Bless, Luke Schoff Principal Issue 10 – 25 th June 2021

Issue 10 – 25th June 2021

From our Head of Secondary School …

Student Reflection The end of Term 2 brings with it the end of Semester 1. Shortly you will receive your child’s report and for Years 7-9, this will include access to student learning portfolios. I would like to talk about how this information can be used to support your child’s future learning. Reports provide information of student progress and achievement up until a specified point in time, in this case the end of Semester 1. What they also provide is an opportunity for student reflection, a foundation of student growth. You can support your child to reflect on their learning by providing a safe space for open and honest conversations. Consider asking your child to talk you through their report one subject at a time, rather than simply addressing the grade. Encourage conversation through questioning. What did you find most interesting? Did you know anything about the topic before? What did you find challenging? Did you discover there was something you could do that you didn’t think you would be able to? When you feel they are comfortable, you can begin to help them to identify what they did well and areas they would like to grow. Again, questioning is the key. Ask them to identify what they did well and how and why they were able to enjoy this success. You can then ask an area they felt they could improve, or something they may not have been happy with – again, asking why and how. Is there a skill from what they did well they could apply to an area they would like to improve? By questioning rather than telling, you are allowing them to reflect on their learning and behaviours, taking ownership for how this relates to their achievement. You can further support your child’s learning by encouraging them to establish goals based on their reflections. By partnering with your child in this process you not only show that you are interested in their learning, but you have a prompt for check ins and future reflections. Please remember that if at any time you are concerned about your child’s learning to contact their teacher for further discussion and support.

God Bless,

Julie Higgins Head of Secondary

From our Head of Primary School …

Here we are at the end of Term Two and I find myself reflecting on a busy, wonderful term where we found ourselves back to almost ‘normality’. Holidays are a fabulous opportunity to re-connect as a family and to spend time together away from the routine of school and work! The disruption of life in 2020 saw many families unable to go about their normal activities, and for many, family rituals reclaimed their valuable position. For some, it was simply going for walks together, riding bikes together, baking, or watching movies together complete with home-made popcorn.

Some things to think about…… Bedtime routines that include such things as reading to your children, singing special bedtime songs or even just lying beside your child do far more than help them to fall asleep. When these routines are repeated, they create neural pathways which enhance loving connection. Family rituals are important for teenagers as they provide a sense of control at a time of change and challenge. Families who are struggling with any uncertainty and stress should regularly connect with a much-loved board game or family movie and dive into it with enthusiasm. Leave work and worry behind and spend a couple of hours with those you love the most. Greeting and goodbye rituals within families are also important. How you welcome and re-connect to children after a day away shows them that you have missed them and still love them. With little ones, some parents leave a kiss on their child’s palm. For others there are special handshakes. Happy holidays, stay safe and enjoy some downtime with your family – celebrate those moments together with some good old-fashioned fun – board games, walks on the beach, bike rides etc Never underestimate the importance or joy of connecting with family. Have a great weekend everyone! God’s Blessings Jane Campion Head of Primary

From our Chaplain … Dear families of St James, It is the last day of Term Two, 2021. We have completed half a year of education and achieved so many wondrous things. Our students and staff are about to embark on a mid-year holiday break. Here is a prayer for this past Semester. We thank you Lord, for Semester One. For the times that were challenging and when we experienced successes. You made mistakes yet learnt from them. Be with us all as a College community as we spend our time with family and friends, locally and further away. Keep us safe on the roads and be with us wherever we go. Give us patience and courage to try out new things. May we be kind to each other and be peacemakers. Give us strength and courage to do what is right. Bless us all with a restful holiday break that will bring us back refreshed and recharged for Term 3 and all the action-packed events that will take place. We thank you for our friends, classmates, learning assistants, teachers, the administration team and our parent and carer community. We thank you for your endless mercy and grace that flows new every morning. In Jesus name we pray, Amen

Peace and Grace, Ingeburg Dell’Antonio Chaplain

From our Kindergarten … The term has flown past so quickly over here in our Kindergarten. As a team we have reflected on how much progress has been made with children really feeling a sense of belonging to our community. Children are building their confidence with our “show n share” and learning how to ask and answer questions. We have also been learning about how to make our own books and the challenging ourselves with a 100-piece puzzle of the world. Next term we welcome our new Early Childhood Teacher to the Buthu room – Miss Kristy. Here are some of the highlights from this term:

Blessings, Jackie Heath Kindergarten Service Leader

From our Resource Centre …

Next term we are fortunate to have author and musician Deano Yipadee visit our Primary School students. Listen to his songs on YouTube or Spotify.

Athletics Carnivals … What an amazing week of Athletics we had across the College. The participation of our students was outstanding and College records were broken in multiple events. Well done to all our students on your efforts this week and congratulations to our Age Champions! Congratulations to the winning houses; Secondary School McKenzie and Primary School Eli.

St James Cup Winners Kellen McDonald & Chloe Haskew Georgia McCready & Kayden Ramsey

Wide Bay AFL State Championship… Congratulations to Kai Turpin, Deegan Payne and Shylah Thom for representing Wide Bay AFL in Cairns and to Alistair Heckels and Ella Parry for representing Wide Bay AFL in Mackay in their age groups. The students were up against extremely strong competition and played exceptionally well in all positions their coach put them in. The 9 - 12-year-old girls Wide Bay AFL team were undefeated in the lead up to the Grand Final where they played South Coast and finished State Silver Medallists. It was acknowledged that this is the first Wide Bay team to make a final in the history of the event. Well done to you all for an amazing effort!

Wide Bay Softball… Last Monday and Tuesday Rory Folker went to Maryborough for the Wide Bay trials. Rory was one of three boys from Hervey Bay selected in the Wide Bay softball team to compete in the state championships in Brisbane in August. Congratulations Rory!

Year 9 HASS Exhibit… Our Year 9 students have been learning about WW1 this term in HASS and created an amazing Museum Exhibit for staff and students to visit. So much hard work, thought and effort went into this wonderful informative and interactive display, well done everyone!

Michelle Mitchell… This week we were fortunate to have Michelle Mitchell, founder of YouthExcel, author and award-winning speaker and teenage expert, visit our College and deliver important presentations to our students relevant to their age groups. We thank Michelle for her time this week; her visit has been really rewarding for the students, staff and families who attended the Parent Information Night.
