SHORT SYNOPSIS LEILA & LENA tells the story of a young female Russian immigrant and a young female Bedouin l iving in Israel. The two women meet while studying at the Film High School and become friends – despite religious and polit ical barriers. They are constantly underway with their Digi-Cam and work together on a f i lm which wil l form the final thesis of their studies. While working on the fi lm they are constantly confronted with pictures from their own history. With their totally different views of the world, the two girlfr iends use settings in the Israeli Negev Desert, in Beer Sheva, on the West Bank as well as in Rahat and on the Dead Sea to show that there is another way of solving confl icts. LEILA & LENA’s naturalness presents a picture of self-confident youth capable of reaching consensus.

Page 5: ISRAEL – AUSTRIA - 2005 · that a meeting with „Russians“ would, quite literally, be the death of her. It does not take long for LENA to free LEILA of her ethnic prejudice

LEILA & LENA Jews and Moslems study together at the university in the desert city of Beer Sheva. LEILA & LENA also study there. They are exactly what one imagines a contrast to be: black and white; large and small; rel igious and secular; mischievous and calmly reserved. LEILA always thought that a meeting with „Russians“ would, quite l iterally, be the death of her. It does not take long for LENA to free LEILA of her ethnic prejudice. From that moment on they are inseparable and the best of friends. During the course of their work on the fi lm, LENA discovers that her older brother disappeared under mysterious circumstances a long time before and the family refuses to speak about it. ABI, an Israeli soldier and LENA’s boyfriend, is injured in a serious bomb attack. He survives through a twist of fate and l ies wounded in the mil itary hospital. LENA is as much in love as she is distraught and misses her lover very much. LEILA is also the complete opposite to LENA when it comes to affairs of the heart. She changes her male friends as often as nomads change their camp sites. She is a good counsellor for the young Jewish woman on the subject of love unti l she herself fal ls head over heels in love with a mysterious stranger who turns up at Beer Sheva railway-station when Leila is leaving for Germany. The mysterious stranger subsequently brings total confusion to the l ives of the protagonists.

LEILA Approx. 23 years old. She is not sure exactly how old she really is. Her family originally came from the Teneree` in the Negev (an old nomadic route) and, as a result of a government programme, they became “settled” on the outskirts of Beer Sheva. LEILA grew up with nature and learned to value the simple things in l i fe l ike water, for example. Leila is a practising Moslem and goes to the Mosque regularly where women discuss a „contemporary“ interpretation of the Koran. Her mother died at an bomb attack and she l ives alone with her father and grandfather. Leila is particularly proud of the fact that she has managed to study because in her cultural circle it was, or is, unthinkable that women should study. She enjoys being independent. Rather tongue-in-cheek, Lena calls Leila an "eco-kosher Moslem".

Page 7: ISRAEL – AUSTRIA - 2005 · that a meeting with „Russians“ would, quite literally, be the death of her. It does not take long for LENA to free LEILA of her ethnic prejudice

LENA 22 years old. Born in Minsk. She is the daughter of Russian immigrants. She is a l ively person and is against a new staging of the victim/perpetrator trauma. Lena campaigns for „Never Forget“ and for a respectful discussion of the past, the Shoa. Although Lena grew up in a religious family, she l ives her l i fe without religion. Nevertheless it is not unusual for her to fast on „Passover“. Their penchant for the Mysteries and their love for the medium of f i lm are just some of the things she has in common with Leila. Lena is an alert inhabitant of two worlds. "I l ive in two worlds, the difference is great. I love both".

DIRECTOR – STATEMENT LEILA & LENA is a f i lm about extraordinary women. Start ing as a documentary-l ike review of the fr iends´ everyday l i fe, i t gradual ly develops into a “parable on intercultural dialogue”. The emphasis and colour of the f i lm is “ inter”cultural not “mult i”cultural . The Negev. Every now and again one sees a tarpaul in camp when one crosses the Negev on Route Nr. 40. The reclamation of the desert has caused the nomads to l ive in monotonous stone sett lements although some Bedouins st i l l l ive a nomadic l i fe in the desert. I t is intended that the impressionist narrat ive sty le of the f i lm should br ing out coherent detai ls that demonstrate the possibi l i ty of a co-existence that goes beyond deadlocked di f ferences. LENA & LEILA have long since outgrown the generat ion that screams for revenge. The young men of the Israel i army are often portrayed in the media as aggressors and oppressors. As in any mi l i tary conf l ict , young people are misused for propaganda purposes. By al l s ides. On another level the f i lm is also intended to promote a greater understanding for Israel ’s securi ty needs. The Middle East Conf l ict is extremely complex and in Europe i t is al l too often used to generate resentment against Semites. Robert Schindel on the subject in the Kurier Newspaper interview on 23. Nov.03: " . . . In addit ion i t is the case that ant i-Semit ism is becoming more audacious, part icular ly in Germany and Austr ia. . . .This ant i-Semit ism is the hatred of Israel and al l who support Israel – Jews in the Diaspora. A modern ant i-Semite can express just i f ied cr i t ic ism of Israel and has the feel ing nothing wi l l happen to him, because i t has nothing to do with Auschwitz. . . .Conversely al l ies of Israel must be careful not to demonise just i f ied cr i t ic ism of Israel i pol i t ics." The story of LEILA & LENA is an unsent imental one. The f i lm goes beyond a documentary- l ike review. It a lso goes beyond the so-cal led “Middle East Conf l ict”. LEILA & LENA gives the situat ion a human and metaphorical perspect ive.

Cinecraft Gmbh

Die Fackel (The Torch), founded on 1. 4. 1899 by Karl Kraus, became and important forum for a cr i t ical approach to culture, ideology and language. The newspaper fought against the brutal isation of language through journal ism and campaigned for puri ty and clar i ty in al l forms of art .

C inecraft Fi lm, TV & Video Product ion was founded on 1.4.1998 by Fel ix R. Giul iani and Christ ian Giesser, exact ly 101 years later. Through certain af f in i t ies, and the approach to puri ty and clar i ty, C inecraft has made, and cont inues to make, interest ing documentaries: Warst du Axel Cort i , Die Steinspur - Karl Prant l , Wolfgang Hol legha - Der Komponist der Bewegung . . . . . . . The intent ion to establ ish a platform for creat ive f i lm making began to broaden more and more. The part ic ipat ion in ideas and a large amount of ideal ism, seduced us into the passion for feature f i lms. In the same way Cinecraft ’s spectrum has been supplemented by televis ion product ions, which have attained an equal s igni f icance in company pol icy. In the future, short f i lms and experimental f i lms wi l l be integrated as a sel f-contained project. This wi l l chal lenge al l contr ibutors to real ise an idea spontaneously using the avai lable resources. The long standing fr iendship and col laborat ion with the director, Michael Pfei fenberger is a symbiosis, out of which came Lei la and Lena – a made for c inema movie completed in 2005. Lei la and Lena is a further step in independence for cultural Israel as wel l as for Cinecraft . A further c inema project is in the pipel ine: „Häuptl ing der Alpen“ by Wolfgang Bauer.
