ISO 28000:2007 is a management system specification developed specifically for companies and organizations that manage supply chain operations. This specification was first published by the International Standards Organization in 2005. It was revised and reissued in 2007. The standard specifies the requirements for a security management system, including those aspects critical to security assurance of the supply chain. These aspects include, but are not limited to, financing, manufacturing, information management and the facilities for packing, storing and transferring goods between modes of transport and locations. Security management is linked to many other aspects of business management. These other aspects should be considered directly, where and when they have an impact on security management, including transporting these goods along the supply chain. ISO 28000:2007 is applicable to all sizes of organizations, from small to multinational, in manufacturing, service, storage or transportation at any stage of the production or supply chain that wishes to: establish, implement, maintain and improve a security management system; assure compliance with stated security management policy; and demonstrate such compliance to others. ABS Quality Evaluations (ABS QE) has experience of security assessments gained from carrying out audits to vessels and port facility codes and is well prepared to provide services to this management systems specification. ISO 28000:2007 integrates the process-based approach of ISO’s management system standards—ISO 9001 and ISO 14001—including the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle and requirement for continual improvement as well as the risk management elements of ISO 14001. While ISO 28000:2007 may be implemented on its own, it is designed to be fully compatible with ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Companies already using these management system standards may be able to use them as a foundation for developing the security management system of ISO 28000:2007. To help users, ISO 28000:2007 includes a table showing the correspondence of its requirements with those of ISO 9001 and ISO 14001. Who should look for ISO 28000:2007? ISO 28000:2007 is suitable to all sizes and types of organization that are involved in: • Manufacturing • Service • Storage • Transportation For organizations working within, or relying on, the logistics industry, certification to the ISO 28000:2007 supply chain management standard provides a valuable framework. It will help minimize the risk of security incidents and so help provide problem free “just in time” delivery of goods and supplies. ISO 28000:2007 is a management system specificationdeveloped specifically for companies and organizations that manage supply chain operations.
