Comments from the Chair

Hi Troops!

Well, ISAP-VIII was, by all accounts, successful. If you weren't there, you missed a truly special get-together. Stellar performances by many outstanding guest speakers and a superb field trip day were a fine complement to the camaraderie, good food, and the numerous photo ops.

We had nearly 150 attendees this year - a near-record turn-out. There were more than a few new faces in the crowd and a big bunch of "old" faces to keep things familiar. A good time was had by all. Only complaint I heard was not enough time to do it all and meet everyone!

It's already time to start planning for ISAP-IX! As I write, your board and I are trying to firm up a

date and a venue. The location is Seattle, Washington, and it is likely that we'll set up shop somewhere near Paine Field (north of the city). We're currently accepting guest speaker suggestions, so if you have any, please pass 'em to Chad Slattery

([email protected]) or me as time permits. Lifetime Achievement Award nominees are also being considered at this time, so please let us hear from you on same when you have a few minutes. Do keep in mind, on the latter, that "lifetime" means what it implies; think in terms of aviation photographers who have been chasing airplanes and aviation subjects for a long, long time - and doing it professionally!

Field trip options are numerous, but we'll have to keep logistics in mind. Paine Field is probably where we'll spend most of our time. Among the options currently being considered are: Boeing plant tour; new Boeing Future of Flight Aviation Center; the Museum of Flight storage and restoration facility; the Me 262 Project hangar; the Paul Allen collection; and a ramp tour of Paine Field.

The Museum of Flight south of downtown Seattle is do-able, but the drive from Paine Field to the MoF is about an hour- and-a-half each way. Nothing chipped in stone, yet, but we're working on it. Check- in here at the ISAP web site for updates.

Foundation, and Bell Helicopter are our destinations for the Eighth annual gathering of the International Society for Aviation Photography - ISAP-VIII!

ISAP VIII - Speakers Scott Kelby - When you look up the word's "Photoshop Guru" in

the latest Websters, there's a photo of this guy right next to the definition. The author of numerous books, bazillions of articles, and tons of tips on literally every minute aspect of Photoshop, Kelby is world-renowned for his Photoshop expertise, his terrific and never-ending sense of humor, and the unavoidable fact he is the founder of the National Association of Photoshop Professionals. He's editor-in-chief of just about everything published with the word "Photoshop" in the masthead, and he serves as training director for the Photoshop Seminar Tour series. He is, quite simply, "Thuh Man" when it comes to the premier image manipulation software program in the world

today. Scott is being presented under the auspices of Nikon and the efforts of NPS honchos Bill Pekala and Bill Fortney.

Vince Laforet - A Pulitzer Prize winner, Canon Print Master, and Canon Explorer of Light, Vincent Laforet's approach to aerial photography has been singled out as one of the most unique and interpretive amongst photographers today. Long the go-to aerial shooter for the New York Times, he combines visual artistry and technical know-how to produce intimate aerial portraits of the city. As the Times's first national contract photographer, he continues to produce dazzling photo essays on a broad range of subjects, including a dramatic wartime series made on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Abraham Lincoln.

Carolyn Wright - Over the past seven years, we have had many requests for legal counsel and a lecture on same. At last we have found Carolyn Wright, a lady with the requisite expertise, and most importantly, the requisite interest, to provide us with a presentation and Q&A session that should finally fill the void. Specializing in the legal issues surrounding photographic copyright and related topics, Carolyn is - not too surprisingly - not only a full-time attorney, but also a part-time professional photographer (a damned good one, we might add!). Among her more notable clients is the North American Nature Photography Association - which is arguably the largest and most prestigious organization of its kind in the US. Get your questions ready, now!

David Carlson (Canon USA) -The ultimate Canon go-to guy, as always, has a few new toys for this year's Canon presentation. Dave - an all-around good guy who even talks to Nikon shooters(!) is promising to show us some new, high-end hardware that includes the awesome new EOS-1DS Mk.III, a new lens or two, and maybe even some odds and ends on the printer side of the business. As we've said many times before, Canon does an absolutely terrific job of working with ISAP at all levels, and 2008 is no exception. It's an honor to have Dave onboard - and we're betting his always-titillating show 'n tell will be as interesting as ever. Bring your Q's!

Bill Pekala and Bill Fortney (Nikon USA) - Our two stalwart Nikon go-to guys have a large number of new toys to complement this year's Nikon presentation. Bill and Bill - great supporters of our organization - have plenty to fill their time slot, with the release of the D3, the D300 and a busload of new high-end lenses since our last ISAP in Florida. Be prepared to see some hardware that will be announced during PMA - which occurs only two weeks before ISAP-VIII. As ever, bring your questions. These guys, like the FAA, are here to help!

Mike Collins - Photojournalist Mike Collins, a magazine editor for AOPA and superb aviation photographer, answers the question: Why should still photographers be concerned about audio? Mike has been dabbling in the world of multimedia--combining still photos and ambient audio to create engaging online presentations. These kinds of presentations are commonly created in Flash, but he's found an economical way to build Flash presentations without having to write code or master the Flash application itself. Magazines and Web sites are increasingly seeking this kind of content Ð learn what you need to know to get started.

Erik Hildebrandt - Erik Hildebrandt is a charter member of ISAP having been among those presenting at the first symposium in Ft. Worth in 2000. We have invited him back to Ft. Worth again to share some of his experiences since that first introduction. Erik will be discussing his self-published coffee table books (5 since ISAP-I) as well as the methods and processes that are involved in bringing a book from concept to market. In addition, he will touch on the various work-flow issues that are continuously evolving in our industry, some updated retouching examples of his work and most significantly, the


recent evolution and implementation of his proprietary MachPOD aerial remote imaging system. The latter has captured the imagination of such aircraft manufactures as Boeing, Cirrus Honda and Eclipse, and led to some extraordinary images.

Paul DiMare - Using dual-core Mac computers and 3-D modeling programs, illustrator Paul DiMare creates intricate renderings of aviation, space, military, and scientific subjects. Paul is particularly adept at depicting machines and space hardware that won't exist for another decade or more. He is a long-time contributor to, among others, Air & Space/Smithsonian and Popular Mechanics magazines.

Bobbie Kenyon - Yes, of the famous Kenlabs gyro company. Bobbie has agreed to spend some time with us and go over the many details of her noteworthy product line. From the KS-2 to the KS-8, she'll give us a brief on her gyros and what they do to improve photography, particularly from the perspective of aviation photographers. Be prepared with your questions - as we're sure there will be many. Bobbie, incidentally, has offered to sell gyros during the event at a fair discount off normal retail. If there are enough orders, she'll increase that discount accordingly.

Jay Miller ./ Chad Slattery / Denny Lombard - Special Plenary Session - Not yet sure how or where we're going to do it, but we may have to set aside an hour or so on Thursday or Friday evening for a business session. Might combine it with "Show 'n Tell", so we can start out on a serious vein and hopefully end up with a good laugh or two! More on this as ISAP-VII draws closer.

Richard Hallion, Ph.D. - One of the most accomplished aviation historians and aviation writers of our day, Dick is a mesmerizing speaker, an extraordinary intellect, and the recently retired Chief of History for the USAF. His final position with the AF before retiring was as Senior Adviser for Air and Space Issues, Directorate for Security, Counterintelligence, and Special Programs Oversight at the Pentagon. Prior to his work with the AF, Dick was a Curator of Science and Technology and Curator of Space Science and Exploration for the Smithsonian Institution's National Air & Space Museum. He was later Chief Historian for the Air Force Flight Test Center at Edwards AFB. Dick is the author and editor of numerous books relating to aerospace technology, history, and military operations, as well as articles and essays for a variety of professional journals. He also teaches and lectures widely. If you need some intellectual stimulation, this is an aviation guy who will have it for you in spades.

ISAP VIII - Field Trip

Field Trip Day: February 29th As in year's past we have a really full schedule. Current plans call

for us to depart the Marriott by bus no later than 7:00 a.m. At present (and this is very tentative!), we're planning to spend several hours at Lockheed Martin. Nothing chipped-in-stone yet, but we've requested a short tour of the F-35 production line and a photo op with the F-35A (currently undergoing flight testing) and possibly the F-35B (first STOVL version; just rolled out on December 17). We are also negotiating to get a P-38 onboard for a static shoot on shoot on the Lockheed Martin ramp. Security issues take precedent, however, and at this point everything is in discussion. We should know more by mid- January and will keep you posted on the ISAP web site accordingly.

From Lockheed Martin, we'll be heading over to the Vought Aircraft Heritage Foundation at the old Vought Plant in Grand Prairie.

There you will have a chance to see and photograph the one and only Vought V-173 ‘Flying Pancake’, a Vought F8U ‘Crusader’, the only known surviving Vought F6U ‘Pirate’, a rare Vought F7U ‘Cutlass’, a rare Vought F4U ‘Corsair’, and a full-scale replica of a Vought VE-7 (Vought's first production aircraft; no originals exist). The VAHS will also accommodate our lunch break - and you will be served barbecue from one of Jay's favorite BBQ joints, ‘David's Barbecue’. Be prepared to be hungry, as there will be plenty of food. If you like barbecue, this is some of the best.

From the VAHS, the current plan calls for us to bus over to the Bell Helicopter flight test facility at Arlington Municipal Airport. We are working with Bell on a plan that calls for a flight demonstration of the Agusta Bell Model 609 commercial tilt-rotor. If this comes to pass, you will have an opportunity for some outstanding photo ops. The Agusta Bell Model 609 is extraordinary to watch as it transitions from vertical to horizontal flight and back again. Chief test pilot Roy Hopkins almost certainly will be on hand to answer questions. Keep your fingers crossed.

Auxiliary Field Trip: Additionally, as in years past, Richard VanderMeulen is again trying to arrange an auxiliary tour of one or more of the other local major air bases including Fort Worth Joint Reserve Base.

Status of this tour is looking very good at this time, but Richard won't know for sure until mid-January. There is a chance for a second tour, as well, of Dallas / Fort Worth International Airport.

ISAP VIII - And there's more...

Photo Exhibit: Details will be presented at the beginning of ISAP-VIII. Not yet certain where we’re going to place the images, but bring ‘em with you ready to hang (or bring your own easel). We’ll accept any size, but would prefer 16”x 20”or larger. No image will be refused. If you would rather mail your image ahead, please contact the hotel desk and give ‘em a heads-up. We will have easels available as always, but bring your own if you can.

Auction: This has become one of the most popular of the many Banquet events.This year, as in year's past, we promise some extraordinary opportunities. There will be the ever-collectible desk model options, as always, but Chad is working hard to come up with some unusual collectibles that even the most reluctant bidders will find irresistable! So bring your cash, checks, or credit cards - and be prepared to bid!

And don't forget Nikon's Annual Paper Airplane Contest! Hit the drawing boards now! Think distance, range, hang time! Nikon, as usual, will have a nice door prize for the winner! Open Forums: Don’t forget that on Thursday and Friday nights, there will be a wide-open show ‘n tell without all the fuss of a formal presentation. Historically, these are a great time to be had by all. For those of you who don’t need an entire hour to make a quick presentation, please bring some imagery and be prepared to entertain for as long as common sense and the projector bulbs allow. ISAP Award of Excellence

Honoring a Lifetime of Outstanding Contributions to Aviation Photography Whether making, supporting, or publishing avia tion imagery, one individual can have a profound impact on the profession. The International Society for Aviation Photography Award Of Excellence recognizes outstanding individuals whose inventiveness and dedication to the field throughout their careers has improved our profession and positively influenced others. Eligibility Requirements - Candidates for this award are living or deceased professionals in the fields of photography, publishing, aviation, or space technology, whose life-long careers have had a significant impact on photography of aviation or space subjects. These individuals have proven to be role models and have inspired inventiveness in others. Selection Process - ISAP invites all members to nominate a candidate for the Award Of Excellence. Nominations open annually on July 1 and close on September 30 and should be directed to the Secretary electronically or by letter. Nominations should clearly describe the nominee’s positive contributions to aviation photography. A panel consisting of ISAP officers and the Board of Directors will review the nominations and submit three nominees to the general membership no later than October 31. Any ISAP officer or Director who is nominated will be recused from further participation. No campaign may be undertaken in support of any nominee. Members will submit votes electronically to the Secretary no later than November 30; if the Secretary has been nominated, a non-nominated Board member will be designated to receive ballots. The Board will ratify the winner, who will be notified by the Chairman by December 31 and honored at ISAP’s annual awards celebration the following spring. It is not mandated that this award be presented every year. The Award - The recipient shall receive an engraved award; lifetime membership in ISAP; and complimentary registration for the recipient and spouse or guest for the ISAP annual symposium at which the award is presented.

Since 2001, ISAP has grown to over 400 members representing some twenty countries. We have successfully filed and received a 501 (c) (3) as a tax-exempt status. Our new "official" name is now International Society for Aviation Photography, Inc.

The board also determined that ISAP membership will be viewed as a privilege. Accordingly, along with membership comes a responsibility to fellow members. The board has created three types of membership: Full- time professional, Part-time professional, and Associate. All member types will share, educate, and network with each other to continually improve the skills and knowledge base of ISAP as a whole. ISAP, it is hoped, will quickly become a professional organization held in high esteem by the aviation industry.
