The standards are: 1.Facilitating the development, articulation, implementation, and stewardship of a vision of learning 2.Advocating, nurturing, and sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth 3.Ensuring management of the organization, operation, and resources for a safe, efficient, and effective learning environment 4.Collaborating with faculty and community members, responding to diverse community interests and needs, and mobilizing community resources 5.Acting with integrity, fairness, and in an ethical manner 6.Understanding, responding to, and influencing the political, social, economic, legal, and cultural context Sample Application Focus Application Focus At the conclusion of this module you will identify key concepts and plan your application focus In the column labeled Current Reality Rate yourself on a scale of 1-5 5 = Highly effective 3 = Satisfactorily Effective 1 = Ineffective Describe the evidence that supports your application of this concept Element 1: Understanding Educational Policy Guiding Questions: What is educational policy? What is the role of educational policy in improving education? What does educational policy have to do with me as an instructional leader? Talk with a partner about your thoughts. Share 1 thought from your partner. Educational Policy Defined Education policy refers to the collection of laws and rules that govern the operation of education systems. Current Reforms Article: Reflections on a Half-Century of School Reform: Why Have We Fallen Short and Where Do We Go From Here? by Jack Jennings Jigsaw - Form 3 groups: Group 1 - Equity Based Reform pp. 2-3 Group 2 - School Choice pp. 3-4 Group 3 - Standards Based Reform pp. 5-6 Be prepared to present at least 3 big ideas from your section and consider the following questions on the next slide. Instructional Leader Connections Group 1: Why are these 3 policy reform movements important to you as an instructional leader? Group 2: Who will make the decisions in these arenas? Group 3: How will we become involved in the conversation? Educational Policy Implications for Arizona Now all read pp 6-11 from same article Discuss the following implications as they relate to education in Arizona: Group 1 Quality of Curriculum (Common Core State Standards) Group 2 Effectiveness of the Teacher Group 3 - Educational Funding Be prepared to present implications for Arizona and next steps. Application Focus What is educational policy? What is the role of educational policy in improving education? Consider the guiding questions, and think about connects between the ISSLC Standard and workshops key concepts Use column labeled Strategies/Ideas List at least three ideas per box Pair share one idea you learned today and how your thinking has shifted about educational reform. 10 minute break Element 2: Responding to the Development and Impact of Educational Policy Guiding Question: What is the role of the instructional leader in responding to the development and impact of educational policy?
