Care homes:Over 18,800 people have signed the petition to Jeremy Hunt calling on him to put an end to unfair charging of care homes, to sign the petition go to:-https://e-activist.com/ea-action/action?ea.client.id=153&ea.campaign.id=38760

Hospitals:Almost 9,500 people emailed Simon Stevens, the CEO of NHS England, calling on him to make sure all hospitals publish an annual dementia statement.

Simon’s response to Alzheimer’s Society was: ‘NHS England will be encouraging trusts to publish an annual dementia statement, to set out the quality of the care they provide. Additionally, we are exploring, with the Department of Health, ways in which we could require hospitals to publish an annual dementia statement.’

News from Alzheimer Café

We have seven café’s at various locations around the Island – please see the support groups calendar for full details, including the revised time and venue for our Ventnor Café.

Each café provides a space in which the issues surrounding dementia can be aired and problems voiced in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere.

Over the May-July period our cafés across the Island welcomed more than 700 guests, including 45 new faces. Their continued popularity is due to the good relationships built up with the volunteers and co-ordinators, as seen from some of the recent entries in our comments book:

• ‘Thank you for the lovely welcome on our first visit, I am glad I came – lifesaver!’• ‘This talk from Kate reinforces everything I have learned in the process of being a carer’

Our July social evening at the Newport café was a huge success. Guests enjoyed a buffet meal and the entertainment was a short play on a dementia related subject.

Our ACE7 sessions (for those under the age of 65 with early onset dementia) have included everything from Nordic Walking and a trip with Sailability to a visit from Independent Arts. We thank our co-ordinator, Maurice Dix, for all his efforts in setting up this café and wish him well as he leaves us to travel across Australia. Anna Roberts will be taking over and brings a wealth of experience of working with those people living with dementia to our team.

Alzheimer Café won two awards at the Community Action Awards evening - the ‘Older people’ category and ‘Overall winners’.

Pictured here are: Maggie Bennett, Marion Brettell and volunteers at the event.

Forthcoming training

Maggie Bennett (Executive of Alzheimer Café IW) along with support from the Ageing Better Lottery Fund has commissioned some one day training sessions on: 5th, 6th October, 10th, 23rd and 24th November and anyone is welcome to attend these.

The sessions - “Lighting DARC – Dementia Awareness Reaching Communities” presented by Dr Gemma Jones - provide accurate information about dementing illnesses to help reduce misunderstandings and fear about dementia so that people with dementia will be actively supported in their communities and their families.

For further information and a booking flyer on the sessions, please phone Ann on:(01983) 882236 ext 113 or email: [email protected]

Community Memory Groups

We have weekly groups offering memory therapy and social activity for people who have memory loss. The benefits include cognitive stimulation (working the mind), social activities, reminiscence and respite for carers. We currently have six groups that run across the Island. The cost of the group session, which runs from 10am to 3pm, is £23 for the day.

We currently have vacancies at all the groups, particularly Newport.

Homebased Memory Therapy Service

This provides weekly memory therapy and activities to allow someone who has memory loss, or mild to moderate dementia, the chance to ‘work’ their minds in their own homes on a one to one basis. We undertake an initial free assessment, and sessions are then charged at £15 per hour.

If you are interested in attending our Community Memory Groups or receiving Homebased Memory Therapy, or would like more information, please contact Jodi or Debbie on:Tel: (01983) 525282 or email: [email protected]
