3EXCITING NEW DEVELOPMENTS FOR REDOKER

RedOker has just launched a new range of products with positive response from consumers. This range will be easier to produce on a larger scale and we are hoping to introduce the brand in a few more stores this year.

Another exciting development is that RedOker was launched in Australia in July and the first consignment of products was shipped recently. We believe the key to success for any manufacturing business in South Africa is to secure sustainable international export markets.

ECO FRIENDLY BIO DIGESTER

1 Digging the hole to the correct size.

6 Burner in the kitchen running off methane gas from the bio-digester.

2 Sizing the hole to the drum. The drum will move up and down with the volume of gas.

3 Lining the hole with concrete.

4 Cutting a groove in the wall for the organic waste feeder.

5 Modifying the drum which will float on top of the organic material and capture the gas being emitted bio-digester.

Martin is a pastor/farmer who Farming God’s Way has been working with in Dar es Salaam. He runs his kitchen cooker, water geyser and generator off the methane gas that his digester produces. All his kitchen organic waste, chicken manure from the chickens he farms and green material from his vegetable garden go into the digester.

As it digests the waste, it emits methane gas, which is plumbed directly to his house. The left over material is a concentrated fertiliser he uses for the next crop of vegetables.

An excellent example of putting the project’s principles into action!

5LAUNCH OF EARLY DEVELOPMENT CENTRE

HOPE CENTRE

Project leader: Lyndia Moffett [email protected] 084 586 8908

THE LINK @ KLOPPER Klopper Park Primary School

The Link @ Klopper Park is a project which provides volunteers with an opportunity to come alongside the learners at the Klopper Park Primary School and to assist them with four essential skills - reading, writing, speaking and listening. Volunteers spend two to four hours per week strengthening the English literacy skills of grade 2 learners.

Volunteers draw children into the story: for example, by asking what they think might happen next, discussing the pictures or asking them to turn the pages. Using lots of expression in the voice creates the mood in the story! The aim of the project is to create a love of reading so that children are inspired to read on their own.

The Hope Centre recognizes the essential nature of early childhood development (ECD) and plans to launch the Hope Day Care Centre in 2015.

We hope to launch the centre by August/September 2015 and we aim to reach:• 40 children in 2015

• 80 children in 2016• 100 children in 2017

In order to launch the Centre we will need funds and we have a budget of R962 000 which needs to be raised.

HOW YOU CAN HELP:Our main needs are financial but any help with supplies and equipment for the Centre would be most helpful.Contact Project Manager, Lynor van Rooyen, to discuss how you can help. [email protected] / 0722563729

BUILDING FOUNDATIONSKlopper Park Primary School

GRADE R INITIATIVEIt is incredible to think that we are already halfway through 2015. We have had a great time playing and building relationships with the Grade R classes. We were fortunate to be able to give each child a blanket to keep at school, to keep them warm during the winter months.

Our highlight is to see the growth in the children, as they become more confident in their command of the English language and of their own abilities to join in the stories and games we share with them.

We look forward to the next six months with great anticipation and are so grateful that we have this opportunity to impact the lives of our young learners.

Paradigm Shift graduates proudly display their certificates

Paradigm Shift is in full swing for 2015. The Entrepreneurial Development programme was launched at the Cornerstone Yeoville venue with three one-day Business Experience Courses having been conducted during June and July.

An overwhelming response from both the entrepreneurs within the Yeoville regulars and the larger community in Yeoville was received. We trained 75 entrepreneurs over the three one-day courses.

The roll-out of the 18 Business Growth & Emmaus Road Courses has also started and

these will run from July to early November. We had a great response to this from the entrepreneurs with an average attendance of 32 entrepreneurs for the first three weeks of the courses.

During the third session of the programme, on 29 July, the entrepreneurs were introduced to their mentors. The mentor will be their guide through the balance 15 weeks.

How do we even begin to address the problem of begging in Johannesburg? We must begin by looking at the facts: - begging is an illegal offence in South Africa- begging is difficult to police- begging perpetuates the problem- begging is linked to drug and alcohol abuse- begging is to the detriment of the beggar’s quality of life and health- begging is not a solution to unemployment

The facts do not simplify the ominousness of begging. When we consider begging with our hearts and not only by looking at it with the facts, most people naturally want to respond to beggars by giving. However, our giving should never be an act of

pity. Our giving should empower the person receiving the gift – ‘Give a man a fish versus Teach a man to fish’. We are all faced with the inhumanity and shame of begging and we easily give in to this system, which, in turn encourages the problem to spiral.

What problems do we perpetuate by giving to beggars? For one thing, we keep the person on the street and for another, we might be supporting drug and alcohol dependency and possibly further crime.

Begging eats away at our community and we are required to be creative in finding a solution. There are many organisations serving the plight of the needy of Johannesburg so rather find an organisation that resonates with the impact you

would like to make. Greater Good South Africa have a wonderful website that can provide you with essential information to assist your community -http://www.greatergoodsa.co.za/. Alternatively, consider one of the different initiatives within the Ukwakha Isizwe Foundation www.uifoundation.co.za

The heart in giving should always be one of generosity and should be accompanied with/by purpose - empowering people has to be our goal in giving. Be involved in your neighbourhood and community by touching sides with organisations that work tirelessly to bring about change in South Africa. Spending time with these organisations will empower you to make decisions regarding the poor in your area.

BEGGING - MENACE OR OPPORTUNITY?
