Dear Parents & Friends, We have almost come towards the end of a yet another busy term—perhaps the most busiest term 3 to date! I am sure that some of us may have felt the pressures of juggling the curricu- lar and extra curricular demands. I’d like to extend sincere thanks to all the stu- dents, staff and families who have worked to- gether to present our annual Performance Nights. I must proudly admit that I thoroughly enjoyed watching and applauding each class performance. I have also received some posi- tive and constructive feedback from families. One of our aims is to ensure the quality and satisfaction of all our programs. Finally, for those of us who are fortunate and healthy, we have once again the opportunity to make the most of the beauty and blessings of the holly month of Ramadan. I hope this period in time will provide us time to self reflect and please the Almighty. Wishing all the Isik Col- lege family a special Ramadan and safe holidays. Sincerely, Mr. Omer Ayvaz Primary Values To address the growing needs of our communi- ties today the Framework for Values Educa- tion in Australia, is a program funded and pro- moted by the Federal Government. Preps to Grade 6 students celebrated National Numeracy Week with a lot of enthusiasm. Students’ participation rate with the many special activities and competitions planned, was pleasingly high! Thank you to all students, teachers and fami-lies who helped to promote numeracy at our school.

Here is a snap shot of our week of numeracy activities and results of competitions undertaken:

Maths Mastermind Tournament:

A big congratulations to students from grades 3 – 6 who rep-resented their grade in a thrilling maths tournament held in the library on Friday the 31st of August.

Congratulations to the following teams for their winning per-formance in a nail-biting round of mathematical problem solv-ing!

• Mathematical Morning Tea: Students were invited to bring something healthy from home, accompanied with a mathematical statement about what they had brought in to share eg. “I have 10 apples, when they are cut in halves/quarters there is enough for everyone in my grade.”

• Guess How many Smarties in the Jar: For a charge of 50 cents, students estimated the number of smarties/jelly beans that were in the jar. The winner keeps the jar, (and hopefully shares with others!)

ACTIVITIES FOR GRADES 3-6 ONLY:

• Daily problem solving challenge: A new problem was posted each day. Students were encouraged to attempt the given problems and submit their answers. At the end of each day, the first correct drawn entry won a prize.

• Project Competition: Students were encouraged to inves-tigate a fa-mous mathe-matician and submit a research project. First, sec-ond, third prizes were awarded. All projects were judged by classroom teachers.

Thank you for your support and encouragement is much appre-ciated. We are now looking forward to an exciting, mathemati-cally-powered week next year.

Ms Demet Latifoglu, Numeracy Coordinator

On Wednesday the 22nd of August, the grade 6 stu-dents had the opportunity to share their scientific experiments with their peers as part of our Science Week celebrations at our Upfield campus. The stu-dents had the chance to demonstrate their experi-ments and discuss their findings with the grade 3, 4 and 5 students and teachers. It was a fun and engag-ing afternoon enjoyed by all.

The grade 1 students at the Eastmeadows campus had the opportunity to engage in experiments suited to their level such as making spaghetti dance, blowing up a balloon using vinegar, lemon and baking soda and mak-ing an egg float in water. Students got a chance to discover what scientists do if the experiments don’t work the first time… They persevere until they get it right!

Literacy Week was celebrated during week 7 this term. Students had a great time as they dressed in the very colourful and creative cos-tumes. We like to encourage creativity and originality. This year we were able to see some very distinctive costumes. We would like to thank all our parents for their support and assistance. Our story teller this year was Matteo, whom entertained our students with his artistic expression and rich stories. The Spelling Bee competition continued successfully this year too, I’d like to congratulate all the participants and Spelling Masters!
