Assemblywoman Melissa “Missy” Miller wants your family to be safe during a hurricane or weather emergency

WHAT TO KNOWAfter the devastating impact of Superstorm Sandy, from which many can still feel the after effects, it is important to practice preparedness in case similar situations arise. Hurricane season in the Atlantic starts in early June and ends in late November, with the season reaching its peak in mid-August to late October.

Be aware of the difference between Hurricane Watches and Hurricane Warnings• Hurricane Watch- Implies that a storm system is possible and is

issued 48 hours in advance.• Hurricane Warning- Implies that a storm system is imminent

and is issued 36 hours in advance.

HERE ARE SOME BASIC TIPS TO KEEP YOUR FAMILY SAFE

Know your evacuation routes and plan accordingly. If you do not know your evacuation routes, contact your local emergency services for this information.

Have an emergency survival kit prepared, which includes:• Flashlight • Batteries • Money• First Aid Supplies/Medication • Emergency Information

If you do not evacuate your home be prepared for an extended stay.

Don’t forget about keeping your pets safe too. Pack enough food for a week, any medication, copies of their medical and vaccination records, information on pet insurance policies, and have a picture of your pet on hand in case you get separated.

PROTECTING YOUR HOME: • Keep all trees close to your home free of damaged and low-lying

branches. • Secure all rain gutters, roofing, windows, doors, and garage

doors.• Have a generator in case of power outages.• Construct a safe room or storm shelter to protect your family

from high winds.

AFTER THE STORM• Listen to public officials, news reports, and radio for updates.• Go home only if the proper authorities deem it safe.• Stay clear of downed power lines and debris.• Avoid crossing flooded areas where moving water is present.• Document all damages to your property.

If you have questions on this or any other state issue, contact Assemblywoman Miller at:2001 Park Street, Atlantic Beach, NY 11509 • Phone: (516) 431-0500 • [email protected]
