A note from the Editors:

We have received some feed-back from our readers to say how much they miss the “A chat with......”segments. Whilst being very pleased to hear that they are missed, they are not something which cango on forever. Basically, we reached the stage where the people we wanted to chat with were eithernot willing, or were not able, to participate.Having compiled over 50 ‘chats’ we have some wonderful oral history which we are working onhaving published in a book which will be on sale in the future. At present the hold up is in finding a grant to cover publishing and printing costs. Whilst our work istotally voluntary, the professionals don’t work that way.To fill the gap for those who like to read of the “good old days” we will trial the printing of someexcerpts which Helen Storey has laboriously copied by hand from old copies of the Boort Standardand other local print. These in their entirety are available for the public to read at the Court House Museum any Friday from2:00 pm to 4:00 pm.Your feedback is always welcome.Jennie Weaver and Jean Henderson“About Boort” Community Newsletter.

LODDON VALLEY AREA (PYRAMID/BOORT) WATER SERVICES COMMITTEE

All the positions on the local Water Service Committee have been declared vacant and anelection for all nine positions will be held shortly.

This is a return to a full democratic situation for our area.Irrigators have the opportunity to vote for the members of their choice and should make the

most of this opportunity when they receive their ballot papers by mail.

Goulburn Murray Water, Water Services Committee members ensure the views andexperiences of irrigation and other rural water customers are conveyed to the Board andManagement of Goulburn Murray Water to inform policies and local operations in critical areas such aspricing, service standards and asset management. This must be done in a constructive manner toensure all sides of each issue are considered to achieve the best possible outcomes for irrigators.

It is critical for our district that we are a financially viable area to ensure the continuance of allour businesses. It is as critical for GMW that our businesses remain viable, as it is for us toensure the viability of GMW.

With all the difficulties we as a community have faced over the last decade, and thefrustrations and contentious issues arising from the many changes occurring, the importance ofupdating our irrigation system cannot be understated. To maximise our opportunities, ensure supplyand give us better service to achieve better returns for our dollar, we need a 21st century irrigationsystem.

This is the challenge that our irrigation community currently faces.

From the “BOORT STANDARD AND PYRAMID HILL GAZETTE”

11th January, 1889The effect of the flood in the Shire of Gordon has not as far as can be ascertained done muchdamage to the shire roads, the worst part being the main road from Durham Ox to Boort, where the approaches to two bridges were swept away and stopped all traffic from Friday tillMonday. The country from the other side of the bridge over the river Loddon was one sea ofwater as far as the eye could reach.

24th July, 1891Residents of the town have at last been relieved of the necessity of acquainting theirneighbours with the correct time as per their chronometers and can now refer them to thenew Post Office clock, the dial of which looked across Godfrey Street for the first time onWednesday evening last.

1st July, 1892THE HARE HUNT came off on Wednesday, those who went out from Boort being

Messrs Andrews, Cameron, Kiniry, W. Hine, Fosdick, Betts, Proctor, Harvey, Athorn, Peirce,Fanning, Suttie, Nixon, Martin and others. The residents of Yando also turned out andbetween them slaughtered some 150 of the rodents. Mr. T. Proctor won Mr Cameron’s prizefor the best tally with 14 hares. Messrs. Oliver and Son and R. Davey spent the day in cootshooting and succeeded in potting some 90 birds. These, with the hares, were forwarded toMelbourne on Thursday morning.

9th June, 1893It will be noticed in the report of the council meeting last issue that the night pan servicerecently adopted by the Council is now to be put in force. The rate is one pound, nineshillings and two pence for the first year, which includes the cost of the pan, but in ensuingyears it will be about one pound. The improved system is a step in the right direction, andwill tend to improve the township from a sanitary point of view.

25th August, 1893Parents should remember that the law of the colony is that their children must be vaccinatedbefore they reach the age of six years, otherwise they are liable to a fine of from ten shillingsto forty shillings for offending.

8th December, 1893PUBLIC NOTICE

On and after the 1st of December the priceof bread will be reduced to five pence per loaf.

William Shaw, Boort.

NOTICEWe beg to notify the public that we have reducedthe price of a four pound loaf from 6 pence to 5 pence.Thanking customers for past favors.

G. Wilson & Sons, Boort.

1st February, 1895Anglers are finding good sport in the Loddon and its tributaries just now, and some fine specimens ofcod, perch and bream have been landed by Messrs. Cameron, Kiniry, Collins, White, Suttie andothers. The fish are in splendid condition, and the sport is becoming very popular with thesuccessful ones.

22nd February, 1895CHEAP BREAD

G. Wilson and son beg to notify the public of Boort and district,That they have from this date reduced the price of their breadfrom 5d. to 4d. per 4 lb. loaf for Cash Only. (the price war continues!!) Ed.

24th January, 1896A local Vine and Fruit Growers Association meeting talked about the proposed fruit show. Samplesof the Golden Chasselas grape grown by Messrs. F. Phillips, W. Cameron and W. H. Smith were avery fair quality. Vignerons and Orchardists are complaining of the damage done by sparrows. The suitability of the district for the growth of wine grapes has been fully demonstrated by MessrsDelmenico and Poxon and others and it is probable that in time, wine making will be as valuable toVictoria as her mining.

On Saturday last, we were shown some amber cane about 8 feet in length, strong and succulent, which had been grown at North Boort by Mr. John Boyle. The owner has about 20 acres of thisfodder and he has proved its worth. The whole paddock looks remarkable well, and it has only hadone watering (when the seed was sown). Other farmers are also beginning to practically recognisethe advantages of fodder crops.

4th December, 1896The first run of the newly formed bicycle club took place on Wednesday when seven wheelmen(Messrs. Dunstan (cap.), D. J. Moroney (vice cap.), Andrews (2), Williamson, Buck and Walton)participated. The course was to Mysia and back. Sundry fixtures had to be made en route and closeto Boort on the return journey, a tire “blew out”. The pace was kept fairly slow by the skipper andthe etiquette of the road fully sustained.

26th February, 1897At a meeting of the Boort Rowing Club, Messrs. C. J. Moroney and Balding were appointed to see if itwere possible to fill the Little Lake from the Big Lake.

27th October, 1899NEWS FROM BORUNG

The bicycle road race from Korong Vale to Mysia and back took place last Saturday. Owing to theevent having been postponed from the previous Saturday, combined with the fact that several of theintending competitors were suffering from the epidemic of influenza, there was only a small field of 9starters. Soon after 4 o’clock the race started, but of the nine who competed, only 7 reached Mysia. Both at Korong Vale and Mysia there was a crowd of spectators. As each competitorarrived at Mysia, he received a sealed envelope and liquid refreshment. The winner wasP. Johnston with 5 minutes start. The whole distance covered was about 20 miles and the time taken63 minutes.

Our Thanks to Helen Storey for accumulating these ‘gems’. Hope you’ve enjoyed reading them. These and more are available for viewing at the Court House Museum, Boort Historical Society.

Hockey Club Shed Opening. An exciting day for the Hockey Club last Saturday as they opened their new shed. What a wonderful speechfrom NCHA life member Jenny Allison who reminisced about hockey in Boort since it began in 1965 and thenhad the honour of cutting the ribbon to open the shed. Boort District Health Raises $12,754 from Murray to Moyne Cycling Event

Boort District Health’s fundraising cycling event “The Murray to Moyne” which took place on the first weekend in April 2011 hasraised a total of $12,754. Funds were raised from donations, raffles and a spinning wheel conducted in Nolen’s Park at Boort bymembers of the Boort District Health Board of Management.

This initiative was months in the planning , with many people from the Community and the Health Service working together toensure the ride went off without a hitch. The planning team worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the event and should becommended for their efforts, said Boort District Health Chief Executive, Veronica Jamison.

A team of 13 riders and 10 Support crew participated in the event, with everyone completing without incident. Excellent feedbackwas received from those who participated with requests already being received from people interested in participating in nextyear’s event.

Funds raised from the event will be used to purchase equipment for the Health Service, with the final item of equipment to bepurchased still being decided by the Medical Services Executive Team.

The event would not have been possible without the generous donation of time and money from many people in the localcommunity and beyond. The names of those who helped are too numerous to mention, but grateful thanks are expressed toeveryone who had a hand in making the 2011 Murray to Moyne so successful.

FREE WHOOPING COUGH VACCINEParents can protect their newborn baby from whooping cough by protecting themselves with a free vaccine.

The number of babies under six months old catching whooping cough has increased dramatically in Victoria over the lastfive years.

Parents and family members are the main source of whooping cough infection in babies. Vaccination protects you fromcatching and passing on the infection to your baby.

If you were vaccinated as a child, you may no longer be protected; immunity provided by the vaccine fades after 6 to 10years.

The Pertussis (whooping cough) prevention program for parents of new babies has been extended to 30 June 2012.

The vaccine is available free to parents, adoptive parents and foster parents of newborn babies through council’simmunisation program.

For further information or to book into a council immunisation session, please contact the Serpentine Council Office on5437 7999

ROCK EISTEDDFOD

Any visitor to the Malone campus of the Boort District School at lunch time would be excused forthinking the old school was a ghost town. There is hardly a student to be seen, this is becauseover 90% of the students are in the Community Centre preparing for Boort District School’sperformance in the 2011 Rock Eisteddfod competition.A core committee of students have worked hard on the theme and choreography for Boort’s

performance overseen by producer Mr Grogan . There has also been a dedicated group workingon design with art teacher Mr Sims coming up with some powerful sets. Mrs Rees and Mrs Poxonare working on costumes and will soon be joined by a willing group of helpers to complete the task. But largely this is a student centred activity with the motivation, choreography and organisationcoming from students. Our entry this year follows the evolution of education from oral histories to the technology heavyfuture. In the beginning, the land is occupied by indigenous characters, who share their knowledgeand histories through spoken stories, through dance, through performance. New cultures arrive, changing the learning landscape with books, pens, ink, and the dominance of the written word.It is not all doom and gloom, though, as the next scene shows us that once upon a time for most ofus, learning was fun, and our pencils, pens and rulers were tools of imagination and wonder. Wedelve briefly into the other side of the coin, with a scene depicting experiences of strict rules androte learning. Here there are many lines; rows of students, lines of writing, lines of punishment. But our independence breaks through, as learners take back education from this dreary system. We receive a glimpse of the future, perhaps, with technology playing a large role, and learninghaving many facets and sources. Here, connection is shown to be important, whether it’s face toface or through a web of technological devices. There is symmetry between the theme and the ongoing construction of the new Boort DistrictSchool. Just as our performance is evolving, the new buildings are also taking shape around us.Over the past 18 months the Boort community have been reflecting on the past educationalfacilities and looking forward to the future and this has been one of the reasons for the choice oftheme. The school have been fortunate to receive sponsorship from a wide range of communityorganisations, businesses and individuals which will directly assist in transport and costumeexpenses, and we thank them sincerely. Students will be performing on the 18th of August inMelbourne but fortunately the community will be able to see a dress rehearsal of the performancein Boort prior to this date. Stay tuned for further updates.
