Foreshadowing

To explore Steinbeck’s use of foreshadowing in

more detail

Foreshadowing is a technique used by the author to give hints

to the reader about what will happen later in the text. The author may use symbolism,

dialogue, metaphors, actions or other techniques to ‘tip the

reader off’.

Steinbeck uses foreshadowing in the novel to give the reader a hint as to what will happen. For example, at the beginning of the story George says to Lennie ‘if you jus’ happen to get in trouble like you always done before, I want you to come right here an’ hide in the brush.’ This suggests that Lennie has a habit of doing things wrong. This is implied by the use of the words ‘trouble’ and ‘always’ which have negative connotations and tell the reader that Lennie is a troublesome character. Here, it is suggested that George fully anticipates that Lennie will get himself into trouble again and is pre-empting what they should do if this occurs, suggested by his comforting yet commanding tone. The foreshadowing is made clear when Lennie kills CW and George goes on to say ‘I should of knew…maybe way back in my head I did.’ This suggests…
