IRON ORE
Da Hong Shan Iron Ore – Pre-Feasibility Study for2 mtpy Mine
CLIENT
S.P. Investment L td.
LOCATION
Kunming, Yunnan Province, China
YEAR
1994 – 1995
SCOPE
• Review mineralogical characteristic
• Flowsheets development for 2 mtpy plant
• Review cost estimate & financial analysis
SERVICES RENDERED
Included in the project were the review of theengineering work carried out by KISC regarding themineralogical analysis of the ore body, the miningmethod, the laboratory test work, the development ofthe flowsheet of the concentrator plant and the slurrypipeline transportation system of the concentrate to theconcentrate storage receiving tank.
The evaluation of all investment costs for the facilitiesand operation to deliver an iron concentrate to steelplant was based on the following technical aspects:
• Underground construction of all material handlingfacilities, ventilation doors and system, pumpingstation, compressed air and communications.
• All pre-production development activities.
• The review of the flowsheet design proposed byKISC and Met-Chem recommendations for furtherpilot plant testwork at the time of the completefeasibility study.
• The review of the design parameters of theconcentrate slurry pipeline transportation system.
• An estimate of the work forces necessary to operatethe mining equipment, concentrator plant andpipeline equipment.
TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS
The evaluation of all investment costs for the facilitiesand operating costs to deliver an iron concentrate to the
steel plant was based on the following technical
aspects:
• Determination of design parameters based on theVertical Crater Retreat (VCR) underground miningmethod: two 2,500 m access ramps (20% grade) toaccess the main core of the ore body, all the raisesnecessary for the ventilation and ore/waste passes
• systems, drifting to ore, haulage drifts, undergroundconveyors declines, and the necessary excavations
• for the crusher, garage, lunchroom, pump rooms, explosives and miscellaneous storage, refuges, etc.
• Underground construction of all material handlingfacilities, ventilation doors and system, pumpingstation, compressed air distribution andcommunications.
• All pre-production development activities.
• The review of the flowsheet design proposed byKISC and Met-Chem recommendations for furtherpilot plant testwork at the time of the completefeasibility study.
• The review of the design parameters of the
concentrate slurry pipeline transportation system.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
The Kunming Iron & Steel Company (KISC) is a stateowned corporation that operates an integrated steelmaking facility in Anning, approximately 50 km east ofKunming, Yunnan province, China.
KISC also intended to develop the Da Hong Shan ironore body to supply the 3,000,000 tonnes per year of ironore concentrate by year 2000.
SP Investment LTD and KISC intended to invest in thedevelopment of the DA Hong Shan mine and the
construction of the concentrator to upgrade the ore andthe slurry pipeline system to transport the concentrateore to Anning. SP retained the Services of Met-Chem tocarry out a pre-feasibility study.
