As I move through my life and professional practice, I strive to build supportive,
meaningful relationships with others, and value learning and curiosity in all situations. I
aim to be a thoughtful and caring friend, colleague, and mentor, while also respecting and
utilizing the scholarship and knowledge that serves as the foundation for my professional
practice and personal approach to living in the world.
As an individual and professional, I endeavor to always show up as my authentic
self, and value compassion and empathy. Through utilizing the human resource frame, I
strive to always consider the individual impacts of my actions as a leader, and prioritize
the wellbeing of my students and colleagues throughout decision-making (Bolman &
Deal, 2013). The theories of Schlossberg (1984), Yosso (2005), and Pope, Reynolds, and
Mueller (2004) support my commitment to learning more about students’ specific needs,
identities, and experiences in order to best support them through their educational
journeys. Throughout all of my work with students I hope to increase their ownership and
awareness of their experiences, identities, and choices, and ultimately help students
increase their self-authorship (Baxter Magolda, 2001).
As a lifelong learner, I strive also to never forget the worth and life-giving spark
that learning and curiosity provides to my interactions with the world. As a professional, I
strive to appreciate and utilize the positive contributions that scholarship, continued
education, and critical analysis of programs and systems can provide to my work. As a
person, I feel most whole when I am engaging with the world through learning.
As I move forward I will approach my work and life with a balance of heart and
mind, letting my passions for both learning and building positive relationships support
and enhance each other.
