"O c o m e all ye faithful" ... Members of the Senior School Choir after their carol s inging at the Penitential Service in the Church on

December 17th

Most of us have a tendency to look back lovingly at the year that has just departed. I suppose it is a natural instinct to remember all the good things that have happened and to conveniently forget the unpleasant ones. Certainly, within the parish of Knocklyon, most of our memories are decid-edly good and that is due to the splendid community spirit that is alive and well. This situation is due mainly to the guidance and help given to us from our Carmelite priests and brothers, and the dedication of so many caring parish-ioners in the activities, spiritual, social and educational of our vast community.

It is impossible to mention all the good things that happened during 1996 but just some of them come to mind. Looking back, The Knocklyon Variety Group came into its own early in the year when they presented their first pantomime "Whose Panto Is It Anyway". The production took place in Sancta Maria College and was a great success. It is good to see young people giving such enjoyment to everyone, especially the children.

In February we learned (via this publication) a little more about the Carmelite Mission of Regina Coeli in Zimbabwe, a Mission which began in 1955, and is twinned with Knock-lyon Parish. In March a Fashion, Show was held in the Spa-well for this worthy cause. It was an extraordinary success socially and financially raising the huge amount of £6,600. It is hoped to organise a similar show in the future.

One of the biggest undertakings of the year was Parish Week. A tremendous amount of work was put into the planning of this project by a large number of people from all parts of the parish. The programme included a Pet Show, Tug-O-War, a Talent Competition, A Garden Fete and Fancy Dress Competi t ion, among the many events planned. Despite the inclement weather (in May!) and the fact that the

Bar-B-Q and Family Sports had to be postponed twice, everyone retained their good humour and a jolly time was had by all.

Many successes have been achieved by the Liturgy and Spirituality Group. The Sunday Club is certainly one of them. This club takes care of children aged between 2 and 7 in the Pastoral Centre during 1 1 o'clock Mass. The children learn about the Sunday gospel through stories and pictures while Mum, Dad and other parishioners can participate in the Mass, undisturbed.

One particularly memorable moment was the musical presentation of the Passion on Good Friday involving a variety of individuals in the Parish. Scripted and produced by Ruth Kelly, containing songs from the musical "Jesus Christ Superstar" and "Godspel", this proved to be a most moving occasion.

Another unforgettable memory was the Carol Service and Vigil Mass on Christmas Eve. A church packed to over-flowing, dimmed lighting, beautiful singing by the combined choirs, exquisite flower arrangements by Phil l ielly and friends, the glorious ceremony and the extraordinary feeling of belonging on that wonderful night.

"Belonging". This word evokes the essence of what com-munity strives to achieve. In the parish it is the business of the Church to promote all things relevant to the community which are "life giving". Collaboration between clergy and laity is at the core of successful community building. It is for priests to lead the laity while listening to discern the spirit at large and encourage participation in the service of the Church.

In the beginning, the Church was the people. It still is. Everyone has a gift or talent which can be used in everyday life and everyone has the freedom and opportunity to promote a community spirit, each in their own particular way. Community spirit is very evident in Knocklyon as one can see by the various activities undertaken by a vast number of people who give their time and talents to the building of a caring society within the area. In this Mews-letter you will once again find a detailed list of groups, all of whom are working in different ways to promote a better sense of community in the parish.

Perhaps sometime you may wish to jo in one of these groups in order to help, to serve, to play, to socialise, to learn, or to.enjoy and share your musical or histrionic talents. There may even be a time when you may feel the need to seek help or information from one of the many groups listed.

One thing is sure, the days of Knocklyon as a village community have long since gone. Even since the beginning of 1996 our population has grown to 16,000 approx. How wonderful that our community spirit is still with us. We are so fortunate to have as our leaders our Carmelite priests and brothers who have shown us the way to grow together in harmony and into what we hope will remain a sharing and caring society. CHILDREN'S CHOIR

I .C .A . Tteco* On December 3rd Mr. Bob Jones, Antique Dealer, paid a visit to the ICA to give a talk and value items for the Guild members and friends. Aside from any monetary considera-tions, it was satisfying to have it confirmed that the treasured dinner service really is early Victorian, or the well worn kitchen chair late Georgian. It all helps to keep our links with slower, quieter times in Knocklyon.

On the strength of the above valuations the Guild mem-bers took themselves off to their annual Christmas dinner, this year in the Orwell Lodge Hotel on Friday 6th Decem-ber, and on Tuesday 17th Kris Kindle made a guest appear-ance at our Christmas party in the Community Centre.

After all the fun and jollification of the holidays what better way to start the New Year than by losing those extra few pounds! And that is what Mary Loughrey from Weight Watchers very gently showed us how to do when she came to talk to the Guild on our first night back, 7th January. We continue to meet on the first and third Tuesday of each month in the Community Centre at 8.30 p.m.

Mi no No l lag was a hectic month for Gaelscoil Chnoc Liamhna. Che children were busy prepar ing for their Ceolchoirm na Nol lag/Christmas Concert, which they per formed to a packed aud ience of parents, g rand-parents, aunts and uncles. Che nativity play which the children per formed with great enthusiasm left tears of pride and joy in the eyes of many of those present. It was evident that in the short space of time since the com-mencement of the school in September, that the children had already acquired a good fluency and proficiency in the Irish language .

Che parents of the children also organised several fundra is ing events dur ing the fest ive season. Cheir enthusiasm and hard work in ensuring that Gaelscoil Chnoc L iamhna is a huge success is evident from their tireless efforts and the support they have shown.

On Sunday 8th of December a Margadh Cisli/Cake Sale was held in the Community Centre, Knocklvon. For days pr ior to this event the a r o m a of home bak ing waf ted through the local i ty. Che event was a g rea t success and many thanks to all the par ishioners of Knocklyon and to the fami l i es and fr iends of those involved in the school who supported this venture.

Che "Dublin Airport Singers" kindly donated their services for our school, and hosted a Carol Service in St. Anne's Church in Dawson Street. Aga in the parents of the school ra l l i ed round and the e ven ing was verv enjoyable, and financially a great help in the de-velop-ment of our school.

Now that we are embarking on a new year, Gaelscoil Chnoc Liamhna has everything to look forward to. We

K N O C K L Y O N PARISH FINANCIAL STATEMENT 1995/1996 At this time each year, it is our practice to provide a Statement of the financial affairs of the parish highlighting the areas of Receipts and Payments.

During the year under review, we have seen the completion of two major projects - erection of additional classrooms for the Junior School and the finalisation of much needed storage buildings for the Church. All of this work could not have been undertaken without the tremendous assistance given to the weekly envelope collection - our major source of income. We should like to acknowledge the support of all those parishioners who contribute on a regular basis and we should like to encourage those not yet contributing to start now.

The major area of activity over the next few years is likely to be the proposed development of a fully equipped Parish Pastoral Centre. While a great deal of exploratory work has been undertaken it will take a sustained effort to bring this project to a fruitful conclusion.

In presenting this Report, we wish to acknowledge the support of the priests of the parish and the assistance of all the other parish committees and groups.

On behalf of the Parish Finance Committee: Michael O'Brien (Chairman) Pat Mullins (O. Carm.)

Stntucye *7t*Pte<i! Before Christmas The Irish Times reminded those concerned to forward items for inclusion in the annual listings of church services which are a special feature in the paper. Accordingly, particulars of the Christmas services in St. Colm-cille's church were provided before the specified deadline. A telephone caller from the paper stated that the service(s) on each day should be set out on separate sheets. Information in this format was faxed to The Irish Times as soon as possible. When the listings were published in due course there was no mention of St. Colm-cille's or any other Catholic Parish Churches in South County Dublin.

Particulars of the church services in St. Colm-cille's were, of course, printed on the front cover of the KNOCKLYON NEWS.

The staff of the Senior School wish you all a happy New Year. The new year has got off to a wonderful start for Ms. O'Gara as she

celebrates the birth of her second daughter. Ruth was born just before Christmas and we send Ms. o 'Gara and her husband Ciaran our congratulations and very best wishes.

For a six week period before Christmas the school played host to two visiting teachers from the U.S.A. Miss Danielle Magliochetti and Miss Tracey Murphy are from Pennsylvania and they spent the six weeks working with Mr. P. O'Neill's and Ms. E. Kennedy's classes. Our two visitors were very impressed with the Irish educational system and were thrilled with the welcome they received from pupils and staff alike.

A special congratulations goes to the school choir for their hard work and dedication in 1996. They were very busy in the run up to Christmas practising their carols. They first sang at the parish carol service on 17th December (see page 2) and were joined by Mr. Ruddy's class with a dramatisation of the Nativity. Their singing was enhanced by the beautiful accompaniment provided by talented musicians from various classes in the school. The choir sang on 18th December at the school Mass and they added greatly to the liturgy. Finally, on Sunday 22nd December they performed in the Annual Carol Service in the Blessed Sacrament Chapel in town.

On 17th December the sixth classes attended an Irish Times/RTE production in the National Concert Hall called "Amahl and the Night Visitors,". The opera was enjoyed by all and afterwards some of the pupils visited the National Art Gallery while others paid a visit to the National Museum and the Natural History Museum.

We congratulate Aisling Corcoran from sixth class on her wonderful performance on the Late Late Toy Show. Aisling reviewed books on the show and her presentation was most impressive.

A number of pupils from the senior school assist greatly in delivering this Newsletter each month. In the deliverers' draw before Christmas, the following pupils each won a £10 book voucher: Tiaman O'Rourke, Nina Kapoor and Ciaran Quinn.

ENERGISED BY LOVE I have always thought of "energy " as a very physical thing. You got it in large quantities when atoms were split or the power of heat or water harnessed. On the personal level, / would feel energetic if I were healthy, ate right food and took the right amount of sleep and rest and exercise.

At least that's how I viewed it until last week. It was in Wellsprings, my favourite book of meditations that I read the words: "/ am energised by love

Energised by love! Straightaway I recognised love as afar more effective source of personal energy than heat or light, than food or diet, than rest or sleep. Love power-fully releasing energy as paralysing hurts are soothed by the understanding of a friend! -as the crippling effects of self-rejection fade in the warmth of acceptance from someone who loves me! - as guilts brought on by wrongs I have inflicted on others are banish-ed by their gentle, generous forgiveness. Love, too, is responsible for the uplift of spirit brought on by genuine affirmation - or that surge of vitality occasioned by the simple positive presence of someone I love. Divine or human ? Does it matter which ? Is there a difference?... "Oh, that towering feeling... 99!

So, once again, spirit triumphs over matter. The energy I most need in life is the fruit of love far more than of bodily condition. So it's love, above all, that I need to cultivate. And isn \ that what Jesus tells me?!!

UPDATE ON PARENT TO PARENT DRUG PREVENTION PROGRAMME

The second course in this series has already com-menced. A further course will begin on February 18th. Places on these two courses have been offered to those already on the waiting list. A limited number of places may still be available on the course starting February 18th. Enquiries to the Presbytery - 4941204.

It is hoped in the near future to train a number of people from the community to give these courses and, if there is sufficient demand, it may be possible to run another course after Easter.

The course comprises a two hour session one night per week for five weeks. Below we print one mother's reasons for signing up for this course, and her reactions to same.

My mother used often say as each one of us left the nest to wed, that although times were hard in her day she would not like to be rearing children in today's world. Now as the mother of a young family myself, I appreciate fully the meaning of her words.

All of us as parents want what's best for our children and are prepared to do whatever it takes to achieve that end. We also have fears for our children and one of mine was that they might fall victims to drug or alcohol abuse. I know that regardless of how responsible my parenting is, there will always be many outside influences and pressures on them for both good and evil.

My fear concerning drug abuse was largely based on ignorance and so when I heard of the Parent-to-Parent Drug Prevention Course starting in Knocklyon I immediately enrolled. I found the course extremely informative, thought provoking and well worth while, notwith-standing the fact that we were presented with some frightening statistics on the subject. A growing awareness dispelled any darkness we might have experienced con-cerning the statistics, as we were taken through five sessions based on wisdom, love, and courage with the overall emphasis on prevention. The structure of each session allowed plenty of time for discussion and quest-ions - all of which was extremely helpful.

On completing the course I didn't feel I now had all the answers, and thus no further cause for concern, but did feel very much more informed and confident in my own ability to deal with the influences of the drug age and with God's help feel I can guide my children safely through the turbulent waters of adolescence.

Brothers Pearse A.C. The athletic circus moved on in early December to County Down. The location was Rostrevor. Everything was idyllic, a beautiful day and a very picturesque course. A fitting stage for the All Ireland Cross Country Championships for children up to 16. Our athletes were not found want-ing. Claire Usher. Karen Tyson and Margaret Sadlier (Girl's U.10). Evelyn Sadlier. Cheryl Murphy (Girl's U.9), Clodagh Galloway (Girl's U.12). Aaron Murphy. Declan Flynn (Boy's U.l 1) all put in strong performances in very large fields in their respective events. Highly creditable top ten finishes were won by Mark Kiernan. Delaford Ave. (Boy's U. l l ) and James Duffy. Lansdowne Park (Boy's U.10). Colin Holmes. Coolamber Park (Boy's U. 13) ran the race of his life to take a silver medal only con-ceding the gold close to home. Great stuff! The star performer was Bronwyn Kiernan. Coolamber Park (Girl's U.l3). Bronwyn took national honours by annihilating a strong field to take gold in a truly impressive performance. Clearly coaches Matty Moloney (Ballyroan) and Bill Tyson. (Coolamber) have the right formula.
