Community SpotlightThis month’s Community Connection shines the spotlight on Pies for Peace.
The local group, created in 2016, “seeks to bring the citizens of our community together to promote peace and a meaningful future for us and for our children.” Pies for Peace does this through events, where the community is invited to come together in peace, over a piece of American pie.
The group hopes to “foster understanding and acceptance of all people regardless of their countries of origin, color of skin, choice of politics and religion, young or old, male or female, sexual orientation or diverse world views.”
Learn more about Pies for Peace, and a big event they have planned for September, on Community Connection, airing the first and third Monday of the month at 8:45 am, during Morning Edition; the second and fourth Saturday of the month at 9:35 am, during Weekend Edition, and Sundays at 5:35 pm during All Things Considered.
Upcoming programs will feature Muncie OUTreach and Muncie Soup Kitchen.
Community Connection is an IPR original program that tells the story of nonprofit organizations in our region. Each month we focus on one organization and what its volunteers and staff are doing to make east central Indiana a better place to live and work. We’re here to tell their story: what impact they have on our community, how they do what they do, and how you can help.
Community Connection is collaborative partnership with Shafer Leadership Academy. This program is made possible by the support of The Community Foundation of Muncie & Delaware County and The Ball State Federal Credit Union.
For information about Community Connection, contact Community Engagement Coordinator Michelle Kinsey at [email protected] or (765) 285-5887.

Sundays at 6 p.m.6 The East Chicago Lead Contamination: A One Year Look BackThis one-hour special from Indiana Public Broadcasting will look back on the East Chicago, Indiana lead crisis after its first year. Reporters will talk with East Chicago residents forced out of a contaminated public housing complex and government officials about what the city, state, and Environmental Protec-tion Agency are doing to help.
13 Intelligence Squared U. S.“Is Universal Basic Income the safety net of the future?” Imagine getting a check from the government every month. $600 guaranteed. It’s happening in Finland, where a pilot program is being launched to test what’s known as a “universal basic income.” Could this idea be the safety net of the future? 20 Music from the Library Steven Turpin hosts selections from the IPR classical music library.
27 Intelligence Squared U.S.“Are charter schools overrated?” In the last 25 years, charter schools have become a highly sought-after alternative to traditional public education. Be-tween 2004 and 2014 alone, enrollment increased from less than 1 million to 2.5 million students. Have charter schools lived up to their promise?
NPR’s National Desk “Going Home”To document the many ways that America is changing, NPR correspondents will travel back to the communities of their childhood this summer to explore their home towns as only a local can. They’ll reconnect with teachers, neighbors, employers, and childhood friends, visit favorite old haunts to see what’s changed and what remains the same, and look for places and things that have been torn down and see what’s replaced them:

Touring Public RadioStudents from The Muncie Unity Center’s Summer Camp toured the IPR studios in July. The students visited Steven Turpin’s music library (one student called the classical compact discs there “really, really old school”) and some even spent some time behind the mic. To see videos from their visit, go to the Indiana Public Radio Facebook page. To schedule a tour of our studios, contact Community Engagement Coordinator Michelle Kinsey at [email protected].
