LAST MEETING RECAP

The September meeting was held a week early in order to do last minute preparation for the show. Judging clinic was held by our head judge, Shane Curtis, with demonstrations and descriptions of the IPMS judging rules. Despite the contest prep, we still had time to show the various models that we had on our workbenches, but had to postpone this month’s demo to the October meeting.

Above: Shane Curtis offering the finer points of judging. He has to be serious— he has his glasses out.

Left: Tru-Color Paints, largest manufacture of railroads paint colors, is now offering line of military colors. The company sent us some paints for the raffle, as well as a few bottles for a demo as part of our contest. The photo at left was from the demo at our contest. The paints cover well and are easy to use without thinning for airbrushing. Clean-up is with acetone or their brand of cleaner, but overall they are low odor and easy to use.

Thanks to Tru-Color for the samples!

Right top and center: In the “no kidding, I didn’t know he still built” category, Mark Gerges bought the MBT-70 kit he had started in the summer of 2016. He added some photo etched parts from various left-overs, super detailed the 20mm gun and turret, and is painting a Bundeswehr crew for the hi-tech but over budget joint US-Germany vehicle from the late 1960s.

LAST MEETING RECAP PART 2

Below: Wayne Vornholt brought some really small, but highly detailed 1:72nd scale Star Wars figures from various Bandai kits. The astro-mech is made up of four parts and decals. The pilot is from a X Wing fighter. Right: If there is one thing you

can say about Larry Todd, it is that he’s persistent. He brought a Budweiser Clydes-dale wagon kit that he started over 35 years ago when he lived in Las Vegas and dis-cussed how after detailing one of the wagon bodies, he de-cides to built it all from scratch— in wood. Each of the eight horses is detailed, modi-fied, and has an unique pose.

Ron Denning brought a few “normal” models in September, or at least nor-mal for him. Below: The XB-70 is from the old Aurora kit from 1962, and he added a pitot tube, new decals and the rest from the box. Above: The A-7 is from 1967, and is brush painted. Left: His F-15B STOL, with added canards is finally finished. Above Left: And the final aircraft is Blue Angels tail number 9 with a F-15. Of course, there are only 8 Blue Angels, and they never flew this Air Force aircraft.

LAST MEETING RECAP 3

Right: Ed Burgess’s Hyster roller is all resin and photo-etched. He received the model in order to write a review. The model sells for 98 Euros from Plus Models. The engine itself has 39 pieces, and the coco fiber pads to cool the rollers were an especially difficult part of the model.

Bill Barker (above) continues to educate the club on automobiles, one or two models at a time. His left model won 1st place at the WCMO show in automotive; he also showed us a Ferreri 250 TR. Only 34 cars were built between ‘57-’61, and one sold in 2014 for $40,000,000. He added aftermarket wheels, a horn button insignia, shifter, seat belts, and painted it with Alclad metalizer finish in jet exhaust.

WASTING TIME ON THE WEB

Want to see some incredible models? Here is a report from an Hungarian model show. One of the things that struck me was the amazingly creative and unique display bases for many of the models.

What’s on Your Workbench

From Ed Burgess: Maschinen Krieger (Ma.K ZBV3000) is a science fiction universe created by Japanese artist and sculptor Kow Yokoya-ma in the 1980s. The franchise originally began as the science fiction series SF3D which ran as monthly installments in the Japanese hobby magazine Hobby Japan from 1982 to 1985. To develop the storyline, Kow Yokoyama collaborated with Hiroshi Ichimura as story editor and Kunitaka Imai as graphic designer. The three creators drew visu-al inspiration from their combined interest in World War I armor and aircraft, the American space program and films such as Star Wars, Blade Runner and The Road Warrior. Inspired by the ILM model builders who worked on Star Wars, Yokoyama built the original mod-els from numerous kits including armor, aircraft, and automobiles. He mostly concentrated on powered armor suits, but later included bipedal walking tanks and aircraft with anti-gravity systems. (courtesy of Wikipedia) There's complicated and not terribly coherent backstory in-volving conflict in the 29th Century, but never mind that. The Kratchenvogel is a 1985 kit by Nitto that is rather advanced for it's time. Photoetch, wire rods, and a grain-of-rice light are included. Instructions are in Japanese, which I'm not good at translating, but the drawings are pretty descriptive if you are careful. Very careful. There is a little corrosion on the metal radar screen. Quality of molding and engineering is first-rate, even for today. I'm replacing the lighting kit with an LED kit from Model-trainsoftware.com, since the original kit seems to require a Japanese battery I don't recognize. There are two rocket motors, but I ob-

tained a set of turned alu-minum verniers from USA Gundam which will im-prove them a bit. The model repre-sents an unmanned an-tigravity scouting vehicle armed with what looks suspiciously like a set of bazookas. It is scaled at 1/20, common in Ma.K, but has no figures. It's about a foot tall and will be rather top-heavy once mounted, so I'll have to devise both a mounting device and a way to integrate the light switch. I've replaced a few of the most fragile bits with brass rod and tube. Some Ma.K kits have been reissued by Hasegawa, and the Ma.K world has been expanded by Wave, Modelkasten, and some res-in producers. Prices and availability vary widely. There seems to be a pretty extensive fan base in Japan and America, with some overlap into Gundam. This my second Ma.K kit, the first being an armored fighting suit that I modified extensively several years ago.

From Timothy Moran: He is working on a Panzer II artil-lery observation vehicle, or in German the Panzer Beo-bachtungswagen II Ausf C from Dragon. The Panzer II was an early WWII tank that was obsolete by the time the war began. It had a 20mm main gun, and 7.62 coaxi-al machine gun, and the hull was modified for many uses throughout the war, including tank destroyers such as the Marder. One of the early was modifications was a artillery observation vehicle, with the most easily observed item being a frame antenna on the rear deck. The kit contains a full interior as well as sprues for two versions.
