How did FFA help you get to where you are today?

FFA has granted me many opportu-nities to become a personable and

outgoing individual. I believe these skills have allowed me to excel in many other areas, including becoming the Iowa State Fair Queen.

Where are you from?

I am from Readlyn, Iowa and attend Wapsie Valley

High School.

When did you get involved in FFA?

I got involved in FFA my freshman year after en-

rolling in an Ag Ed class.

Why/How did you get involved?

My brother participated before me and had suc-

What skills attained from FFA do you think will help

you the most in the future?

Some of the skills that will help me the most include my outgoing nature, my

determination to better myself and my love to advocate for agriculture in the great state of Iowa.

What advice has had a major impact on your life?

Mrs. Doese, my AgInstructor, has taught me and the rest of her students

to always go after your goals. This motivation has encouraged me to further my potential.

If you were asked to give one piece of advice, what would you share?

If I were to give anyone ad-vice, I would tell them to be yourself because you can’t

be anyone better than yourself.

“We had a lot of new members this year, but for not having many experienced\ ushers, we did very well. The first few concerts were fairly easy crowds, so

the new kids got acclimated to the job easily and the returning ushers were very cooperative where experience was needed.“

Boy’s Head Usher

ANDREA KUFFEL CHAPTER: Mount Ayr FFA

“As a Head Usher this year, I was able to experience the complete ushering experience. Every year the FFA mem- bers get to discover Iowa FFA’s “best

kept secret.” I love watching the shy people break out of their shell by meeting new friends through card games, swimming, swing dancing and working at the concerts. Usher friendships never die and the experi-ences last a lifetime!”

Girl’s Head Usher

Head Ushers

In the game of life, there are some things we can ALWAYS count on. Friday night football, Grandma’s homemade apple pie and the endless opportunities that both the blue corduroy jacket and the good Lord Himself provide us with each and every single day, are just a few examples of those things we can count on.

Although these all ring true, there is one that is most definitely missing from this list, and I believe y’all

would agree - The GREAT Iowa State Fair! Each year, visitors from all over the country trav-el to the Iowa State Fairgrounds in Des Moines, Iowa to experience all that the eleven day event has to offer. From anything and everything on a stick to some very impressive concert lineups, the State Fair never seems to disappoint.

One thing that doesn’t always come to mind right away when talking about this experience is the amount of opportunity presented to FFA mem-bers throughout the fair. Whether that is showing livestock, restoring a tractor or getting selected to be a Grandstand Usher or Free Stage Attendant, there are definitely ways to get involved. With 99 Ushers and 25 Stage Attendants, great stories and lasting memories were plentiful. Derick Perkins, senior at Starmont High School had this to say when asked about his time spent as an Usher, “First off, it was amazing. I had a good time and a lot of fun meeting people that I will keep in contact with in the future.”

Witnessing friendships develop amongst these young men and women and taking part in creat-ing memories that will last a lifetime will top my

list of experiences this year. These are just a few things that came about from the unique experi-ence serving both as an usher and state officer. After a long night’s work of showing concert goers to their seats and maintaining a safe envi-ronment, as well as ensuring a fun and enjoyable show for Grandstand attendees, it is always nice to have something to look forward to close things out.

~Marshall Dolch

For years, Liemon’s Pizzeria has been doing just that. Jay Spitler, a sophomore at Belmond-Kl-emme agreed, saying, “Chillin’ and hanging out with the other Ushers was a great time.” With school back in session and an eleven month wait until another “Fairlicious” time, these FFA members will be enjoying numerous other activi-ties available in this organization. Violet R. of Des Moines Roosevelt had this to say about the FFA, “It’s very rewarding working together as a team and meeting new people.”

Ms. Melanie Bloom, Sioux Central FFA Advi-sor says, “Having District and State leaders visit your classroom makes your students contemplate the possibilities associated with serving as a chapter/district/state officer themselves - makes it seem more tangible. They also enjoy going to State Leadership Conference and seeing state officers that they’ve been able to interact with personally. The connections are real!”

Chapter Visits

A Chapter Visit is an educational experience that takes place during the regular school day. It’s an opportunity for several state and district of-ficers to come to your school to host interactive workshops during your Ag classes. It can also be a viable experience for officers to meet with your school administration, chapter officers and middle school students. To line one up, have your advisor contact your district president today! For more details, go to www.iowaffa.com.

11 FAIRLICIOUS DAYS OF SERVICE

It’s 8 o’clock in the morning, we finally found a place to park and walked the two blocks it took to get to the gate; while having our tickets scanned a voice says good morning and passes over a pamphlet. Looking up I noticed they had yellow shirts on and made a mental note to ask about who they were later, but right now the first thing on my mind is to find the butter cow! Looking at the map there are a few building that really stick out like the Grandstand and the Varied Industries building, but there are some others that aren’t marked. Turning back to the yellow shirt that gave me the pamphlet, I ask him and with a little laugh he points out the Agricultural Building.

If a person would go up to an Usher, the teens in the yellow shirts, and ask what the most frequent question for them is; they would probably say directions to the butter cow or at night, where section DE or OP are at the Grand-stand! The Usher program with the State Fair is just one way that you can play a role in what makes the fair run smoothly. FFA members also

long as it’s ok with their parents) and bring it to the fair to enter it into one of the many classes in Ag Mechanics. Do you have your own custom bailing company as a SAE project? Do you love to help with the crops on the farm? Do you have some quality row crops? Many types of projects can be brought to the fair!

Speaking of crops, harvest-time is here! Which leads us into photography; the theme of this year’s photography is “Harvest” and there is a class for every picture you could possibly think of! Are you the one in your group of friends that might as well be a paparazzi? The building all these pictures are kept in is called the FFA Foun-dation Building. If you can’t find the building, just look for the surrounding 70+ tractors that were refurbished and entered by members.

Remember how the Usher said the Butter

Cow is in the Agricultural Building? Well there is a lot more than just butter there! The FFA Display in the Ag Building might have your chapter’s jacket displayed, but if it’s not there, get after your Advi-sor to give the State Association an old one!

I’m sure that when you see “FFA Head Quarters” that you’re wondering why we call it that. Unfor-tunately, we don’t have spy gear and repel from the ceiling even though none of the state officers would be against that! HQ is where FFA has its offices at the fair. We compile results, have team meetings, hand out the show t-shirts and numbers, distribute ribbons and get awesome surprise visits from advisors and members just like you!

A few other activities you can be involved in are showing livestock. You can show a variety of animals, such as sheep, goats, rabbits, poultry, beef, dairy cattle and hogs. All FFA livestock, except goats, are shown in the first week of fair, so stu-dents won’t have to miss much school!

In the hog barn there is something called the

Avenue of Breeds, which is ran by the North Polk FFA Chapter. After going through the Avenue of Breeds you can walk down the road to the Animal Birthing Barn which is run by the Southeast Polk FFA Chapter. Both places are great to go to if you have a little cousin, brother, or sister that you want to keep entertained for a while!

While you are walking from one to the other don’t forget to stop by the giant slide, sky glider, chocolate chip cookie stand or the super corn dog stand!

There are so many opportunities to get involved at the Iowa State Fair as an FFA member! You will have to come next year to see all the fair has to offer. Go to www.iowaffa.com to see how to get in-volved! Hope to see you there and, as always, have a Fairlicious day!

This year the North Central District held their District Leadership Confer-ence for Chapter Leaders on June 1st at the North Iowa Area Community College.

In attendance were 70 members and more than15 chapters this year. We also had a great amount of help from the state officers. The state of-ficers that attended included; North Central State Vice President, Theresa Fitzgerald, State President, Steven Brockshus, State Reporter, Cassie Galm, Southwest State Vice President, Marshall Dolch, and South Central Vice President, Michael Knight.

Everyone had a great time going through the workshops on Chapter

Improvement, Chapter Involve-ment and Communication Skills. We also got the chance to hear about the Iowa FFA Alumni from representatives Ann Bassett and Ashley Fitzgerald. They talked about starting an alumni for your chapter and if you already had one the benefits you could get from them.

Everybody had a great time and walked away with a t-shirt and great skills to bring back to their chapters.

District Leadership Conference for Chapter Leaders started off on June 6th at the Panora High School in Panora, Iowa. Members were greeted by the district officer team with a new district t-shirt. Then the excited members were split into groups to meet new people and to experience four different workshops that would improve themselves and their chapters. The four workshops consisted of Communication, Chapter Involve-ment, Chapter Improvement, and an Iowa FFA Foundation work-shop.

Workshops were led by the cur-rent Southwest District officer team with the help of Past District Officer, Matt Kerns, Southwest

State VP, Marshall Dolch, South Central State VP, Michael Knight and past Southwest State VP, Michael Mardsen.

The communication workshop was lead by Jared Calvert and Emily Seidl. Members learned the difference between Red Light & Green Light questions and the steps of the Con-versation Stack. Michael Wittrock and Matt Kerns lead Chapter Involvement. In this workshop members discussed what different activities the chapters participate in and how to improve the activities. Steps required for event planning and identifying strategies for application were discussed by Mikayla Dolch and Tyler Johansen in the Chapter Improvement workshop. Overall, the Southwest District had a very inspiring and memorable day at DLCCL.

Growing Northeast

The Northeast District held its District Leadership Conference for Chapter Leaders (DLCCL) on June 6th in Tama Hall on Hawkeye Community College Campus. Five different workshops were put on by district officers, state officers and Mr. Joshua Remington, executive director of the Iowa FFA Foundation. A total of 69 participants from 13 different chapters attended confer-ence, which was an increase from the previous years. Participants had the opportunity to pick up leader-ship skills, learn about FFA oppor-tunities, chapter involvement, and much more!As summer wrapped up and stu-dents headed back to school, the Northeast District Officer team be-

gan planning and preparing for Greenhand Fire Up (GHF). Prepa-ration began with fall SLCDO on September 23rd and 24th at the FFA Enrichment Center. While at SLCDO, district officers were taught how to facilitate the work-shops for GHF along with overall leadership skills. Greenhand Fire Up will be held on October 10th at Wapsie Valley High School for any new FFA members. Partici-pants at GHF will get the oppor-tunity to go through multiple workshops, put on by district and state officers that teach anything from FFA opportunities, leader-ship skills and world wide prob-lems related to agriculture.

FairSeason

The county fair is a chance for local 4-H and FFA members to exhibit all of the hard work they have accomplished throughout the past year. It brings out the best of those members and re-wards them for their dedication.

The county fair is a chance for students to set personal goals and push themselves to achieve them. Whether it is buying a calf and learning how to properly care for and feed it, or going out every day and hunting for the perfect photo to show at fair. There are so many ways for members to show off what they are proud of.

When I think of the fair I think of a place to create friendships that will last forever. A place to show off how hard you have worked with your animals or projects in the past year. It is also a learning experience that teaches you what you did well in and what you need to improve for the next year.

So 4-H and FFA members remember the advice your judges give you and utilize that to set your personal goals for the upcomming year. To every-one else be sure you don’t miss the chance to go out and support your local 4-H and FFA members at the county fair.

Sukup has created an extraordinary home design resembling a grain bin that can be used in countries raided by (stricken with) natural disaster. After the devastating earthquake that shook Port au Prince, Haiti, Su-kup began the development of their home, the Safe-T Home.

The Sioux Central FFA Chapter has become a part of the Safe-T Home as an extension of Global Compas-sion Network (GCN). In January, the chapter was approached by a local farm bureau representative who pro-posed the idea to have the chapter donate a home. After much thought and debate during meetings, Sioux Central decided to not only purchase the home, but send members to Haiti to construct the home.

Below are some remarks from a Sioux Central member who went to Haiti. “When we first saw the Safe-T Homes, we each had a different

reaction to it. I thought that the buildings couldn’t seem more out of place in the village. Brad Aronson thought that it almost seemed like a glimmer of hope for the Haitians. Jordan Bayliss and Carly Huber thought it seemed alien to the area. However as the week slowly progressed, the structures couldn’t seem to be more fit for the area. The Haitians were hesitant at first about accepting these homes. Their main reasoning, like most people, is the simple fact that the building is made of metal and as we all know, metal gets hot when the sun beats down on it.

What most people don’t realize is, the building was designed with a heat shield and a vent on the top which acts like a chimney. As we all learn in general science, heat rises, which in turn flows out the vent leaving the cooler air in the home Imagine living in a hut no larger than a garage car stall with any-where from 9-19 other people.”

Role Models: “My dad has been around agriculture all of his life. My mom also has been, growing up with a family who were outdoors all the time and planted their own gardens. I’ve learned all that I know from them. I would also include my stepdad. He constantly works on my gardens and has vast knowledge of agri-culture. And for that, he is also a role model of mine.”

Tri-County FFA Run

The History: There has tradition-ally been a ‘Fun Run’ of sorts during the Keokuk County Fair for decades. It has been called “The Roller Coaster Run” in the past, a name earned by the hilly course that participants must follow. In the past the run had been spon-sored by Rosie Phillips and Iowa Telecom. Two years ago, Iowa Telecom decided to drop corpo-rate sponsorship for the run and the Tri-County Community FFA Chapter became the sponsor for the 5K & 1 Mile Runs.

The Purpose: To encourage the local members of the Tri-County Community FFA Chapter and members of the community in promoting healthy choices, active lifestyles, and personal fitness.

Duties of Chapter Members: As a chapter we provide a local spon-sorship for the ‘Fun Run’, but our members have individual duties and responsibilities pertaining to the run. Our members work during the run at the check-in table, finish line, start line and throughout the course. Our chap-ter also provides plaques, medals and T-shirts for the run. We also encourage any members interested in participat-ing in the run to do so.

Benefits for the Chapter: This event provides a working environment for our chapter members to bond and work as a team, make group decisions and strengthen our relationship with community members.

Long-Term Results of the Run: The event is better publicized and is bring-ing in a slightly bigger crowd in each coming year. Our chapter has decided to continue sponsoring and improv-ing this event for many years to come.

The FFA Jokes of the Month

Washington Leadership Conference

WASHINGTON LEADERSHIP CONFERENCE

From June 11th to June 17th, Crystal Kleitsch, Makayla Dixon and Abrah Meyer attended the week-long Washington Leadership Conference in Washington D.C. The three Wapsie Valley FFA members zipped up their blue corduroy jackets, along with 300 other FFA members from around the country, to discover their purpose. Tour-ing the city marked a big part of the trip as the group attended the Arlington National Cemetery, the Newseum, Smithsonian Institutions, the Capitol, and many other monu-ments. These attendants engaged themselves in vulnerable group sessions, where they realized the need for action and the need for service from themselves and others. These sessions offered opportuni-ties of service, an advocacy panel with many of today’s agriculture leaders and inspired all 300 mem-bers to accept diversity. Round-

ing out each day, the attendees reflected back on the moments of impact that were made throughout the conference. Asking each of the Wapsie Valley FFA members about their outlook, Kleitsch said, “The friendships I developed, the sights I saw and most importantly, every-thing I learned about myself and the world, was life changing.” Dixon added that, “(Washington Leader-ship Conference) was an experi-ence of a lifetime. It really changed my life! I learned that if I won’t do it, who will?” Completing their experi-ence, the 300 FFA members teamed up with ‘Kids Against Hunger’ by packing meals to send to the strug-gling country of Nicaragua. In less than two hours, the team packed over 41,000 meals. Meyer ex-pressed her excitement by stating, “It was amazing to make such an outstanding impact in so little time. I found that there is always a need

for service and it starts with yourself.” As the members returned home, they kept one thing in mind: Everyone has a purpose.

Beginning in 1996, Titan Tire In-ternational has had a very special relationship with the Iowa FFA Foundation. Since that time, each year the Farm Progress Show has been in Iowa, Titan Tire has donated tires and hosted an auction with all proceeds going to support the Iowa FFA Foundation! The 2012 Farm Progress Show was the tenth occurrence of the auction in Iowa and more than 30 generous bidders celebrated by repeatedly raising their paddles to donate more than $56,000! This far exceeded the pre-vious bidding record for the event, which was $43,000 raised during the 2010 show, also held in Boone.

tion program. Locally, through this program, Titan Tire sends tires free of charge to students who are restor-ing a tractor to compete in the Iowa FFA Agricultural Mechanics Show held annually during the Iowa State Fair! Linda Adamson with Titan Tire says, “We love helping the kids! Through this program students have an opportunity to receive quality-built Titan and Goodyear Farm tires, allowing many students to participate who may otherwise not be able to afford it.”

Linda Adamson’s passion for agri-cultural education doesn’t end at the tire factory’s door; through the great support of Titan, she has served the Iowa FFA Foundation as an integral member of the campaign and spon-soring committees and on the Board of Directors. “The Iowa FFA Founda-tion is honored to partner with Titan Tire and appreciates the opportunity for their employees to engage with our programs and students,” says Joshua Remington, Iowa FFA Foun-dation executive director.

“The Iowa FFA Foundation cel-ebrates the immense generosity and supporting partnership we have with Titan Tire, makers of ‘Made in Amer-ica’ Goodyear and Titan agricultural tires,” said Remington. “From the first time I visited their plant on the east side of Des Moines, I knew there was something special about this company and the products they build; the care, the passion and the quality put into each individual tire is unmatched. Titan isn’t just another business, they are a family, sharing

One specific tire turning heads at this year’s auction was the new Titan WHO-FFA Tractor Ride Tire. The prototype for this tire was first introduced at the WHO Tractor Ride announcement party in January and the first official tire rolled off the factory line in April! In addition to a center rib locking the tire lugs together for a higher quality ride on paved surfaces, this tire features the first ever FFA emblem embossed on the sidewall of a tire! Titan has generously pledged to donate the proceeds from the sale of these tires to the Iowa FFA Foundation.
