Iowa CPA Education Foundation launched
During ISCPA’s May 9 Annual Meeting & Leadership Conference in Altoona, 100th Anniversary Task Force Chair Dave Farnsworth revealed an exciting new initia-
tive involving CPAs across the state—the launch of the Iowa CPA Education Foundation.
Support and sustain CPAsThe foundation will provide scholar-ships and financial assistance to Iowa college students who are pursuing a goal of becoming a certified public ac-countant. In addition to scholarships, a future objective of the foundation is to provide funding for financial literacy programs in Iowa.
“With recent reports showing that the average student loan debt for a graduating senior is almost $30,000, any help de-fraying the costs of college is welcome relief for Iowa families,” said ISCPA CEO Cindy Adams. “By creating this scholarship program to provide tuition assistance for Iowa accounting stu-
dents, we’re supporting the hard work of these future CPAs.”
Thank you, chaptersISCPA’s ten chapters were dissolved this year and reorga-nized into five regional alliances. Thank you to the members
who voted to approve the transfer of re-maining dollars in their chapter to provide start-up funding for the foundation.
100 in 100One hundred percent of ISCPA members are encouraged to make a contribution to the foundation by the ISCPA’s 100th anniversary celebration, May 7-8, during the 2015 Annual Meeting & Leadership Conference. Two $2,500 scholarships will be presented during the event.

Meet your new ISCPA president: Jim Smith
Jim Smith, a partner with McGowen Hurst Clark & Smith PC in Winterset, assumed his role as 2014-15 presi-
dent of ISCPA May 1. We had the oppor-tunity to visit with Jim about growing up in Iowa, his career as an Iowa CPA, his involvement in the profession and what he’d like to accomplish this year.
Where did you grow up?My parents grew up a quarter mile from each other near Winterset. When my dad came home from the war, they got married and bought 50 acres next to my grandfather’s farm. I grew up there with four sisters and one brother.
What was it like growing up on a farm?It was a good life other than fighting my four sisters for the one bathroom we all shared! It was a typical family farm, and we worked together to run it ourselves. We had crops, livestock and gardens. It was all done manually back then. My dad was a good carpenter and could weld, wire, or do pretty much anything else that needed to be done. He had a can-do attitude that influenced me a lot. You see something and figure out how to do it.
Tell us about your first job.I worked at the local meat processing locker for $1.25 an hour through high school and during college breaks. It was good training to get up in the morning, be on time and be accountable.
What first interested you in account-ing?The road to accounting wasn’t exactly a smooth trip. I started in engineering and
switched to math. I was still struggling with what to do. One of my friends said accounting was interesting. I tried it and it fit perfectly.
Tell us how your accounting career progressed.I started with Coopers & Lybrand out of college, when there was the Big 8 accounting firms, and worked there for nine years. Working for a large national firm was good for me, but it helped me realize what I wanted to do. My wife also grew up in Winterset, so we moved back to open an office of my own and help my dad with the family farm. Now it’s a century farm and my wife and I live there.
How did you transition to McGowen?Dave Hurst worked there and we had worked together at Coopers & Lybrand. We stayed in touch over the years, and he was always helpful with tax guid-ance and to bounce ideas off of. After three years on my own, the business got bigger and I needed more resources. It made sense for me to merge with McGowen. And Dave is still one of my primary go-to people.
What would you like to accomplish during your term as president?I’d like to see membership momentum continue since we just came off the
biggest year of growth since 2004; educate more people about what ISCPA does; have a collaborative, active and engaged board of directors and mem-
bership; and continue the conversation on how to engage younger people.
What inspired you to take a leadership role with ISCPA?About ten years ago, I woke up one day and realized I hadn’t given back to my pro-fession. I volunteered
for a committee, started going to ISCPA events and conferences and recon-nected with people I had known for a long time. Then, I was invited to be on the board. The passion for what I do is what’s in it for me, and I love being part of the board. It’s a wonderful opportu-nity to serve the profession.

Obama signs DATA Act into law
With a stroke of the pen, President Obama has paved the way for easier tracking
of federal spending data by residents of Iowa. The Digital Accountability and Transparency Act (DATA Act) was signed into law by the president, May 9, 2014, after being given final congressional ap-proval on April 28.
What is the DATA Act?The DATA Act will standardize the ways in which federal spending information is reported and call for the creation of a searchable online database that would let all Americans see how the govern-ment is spending their money.
Although the bill doesn’t mention it by name, extensible Business Reporting Language, or XBRL, will likely play a key role in the standardization of govern-ment data, and with good reason: XBRL works, it saves money, and it lets finance folks spend less time on data management and more time on data interpretation.

News you can use Educator’s insight on future CPAsEditor’s note: Our series of interviews with Iowa CPAs employed at Iowa col-leges across the state continues. This month we visited with Iowa State Uni-versity Lecturer of Accounting Michael Bootsma about his career and passion for the profession.
Who influenced you to study account-ing?The only business class my high school had was accounting. I was excited to learn more about business so I took the class and it made sense to me. As part of the class, an accountant came to my high school and discussed being a CPA. I still didn’t know exactly what I wanted to do when I went to college. I even asked an advisor about being a police officer!
Where did you go to school?I started at Iowa Lakes Community College. It was a fantastic value, and there was a great accounting instruc-tor named Lecia Berven who really encouraged me and helped me achieve success. I transferred to Iowa State and was interested in finance. I believed I could get good grades in accounting, so I double majored.
How did you decide to combine a law degree and CPA license?The only job I was excited about dur-ing my senior year was a job at Arthur Andersen. Luckily, that did not work out as the firm imploded a few months later. I had taken the LSAT and done well, so I decided that was a sign I should go to law school. After the first year of law classes, there were warnings that
it might be hard to find employment in the legal field. I decided to get my CPA license, which I thought would help me get interviews with law firms.
Tell us about your path from law school to teaching?I taught part time at Kirkwood Com-munity College in Iowa City during law school and really enjoyed it. After law school, I went to work for AEGON in their tax department. In 2009, a full-time job opened up teaching accounting at Kirkwood’s branch in Iowa City. I was hired and really enjoyed the atmosphere of Kirkwood. Later, after duping a young lady from Des Moines into agreeing to marry me, I was considering employ-ment in the Des Moines area. A job was open at Iowa State University, so I put in my application. I was hired and I have enjoyed being back at ISU immensely.
What will this generation bring to the workforce?An ability to quickly understand and adapt to technology and change. They use a new app every week on their phone, so they are flexible with change and seem to welcome it. Another inter-esting observation is that these students are used to, and understand, the pos-sibilities and value of marketing because of the digital and social media world.
What challenges might they have starting in the workforce?Their perception could be skewed on what they will be paid starting out and what their benefits will be. In the fast paced world of technology, some
students believe there lots of big-paying jobs just a click away. However, the job application process is still quite arduous and big salaries generally come after experience. In addition, new graduates are so savvy with technology, some may discount co-workers a bit if they don’t know what Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, Snapchat or Vine is.
Any advice for people who manage new CPAs?A lot of us were raised in a different time with a different parenting ap-proach. As a teacher I try to be as positive and motivational as I can. In addition, new graduates are used to solving problems quickly. I would spend some time explaining your expectations and reassuring new hires that things will be challenging at first, but with some ef-fort, efficiency and success will come.
Thank you for being an active member of ISCPA. What’s in it for you?Being part of ISCPA allows me to catch up with folks that I worked with in the past. I also get to meet new individu-als who are doing great things in the business community. I am always excited about who I have met when I leave an ISCPA event. Our Society also allows me find out about changes in the profession and obtain my continuing education. Finally, some people may not understand the public wouldn’t have the view of CPAs that they do without the IS-CPA. A lot of the high public perception has to do with the brand image that was created through our organization.
