Ionic Compound Names and Formulas
Goal: to unambiguously ...
• go from a name to a formula
• go from a formula to a name

Remember, ionic compounds are always made of two ions, a positive cation and a negative anion.
I'm attracted to her negativity!

Remember, ionic compounds are always made of two ions, a positive cation and a negative anion.
This is a binary compound because it's made of two elements.

Li NO3
But one or both ions can be made of more than one atom.
This is a ternary compound because it's made of more than two elements.

Li NO3
This is a ternary compound because it's made of more than two elements.
This ion, that is made of multiple atoms is called a polyatomic ion!

Polyatomic IonsAs the name implies, polyatomic ions are made of several atoms.
• These atoms are joined by strong covalent bonds (which we'll study in another unit).
• For now, just think of them as a group of atoms glued together that, as a group, have a charge.

Polyatomic Ions
• Polyatomic ions are everywhere and are important.
• The sooner you learn to recognize them, the easier your understanding of chemistry will be.
• You will need to memorize 10 of the most common (there are MANY more).

The ten you need to know are:
Ammonium NH4 +1
Nitrate NO3 1
Chlorate ClO3 1
Permanganate MnO4 1
Acetate C2H3O2 1
Hydroxide OH 1
Sulfate SO4 2

Polyatomic ions act just like singleatom ions. They bond with ions of the opposite charge in the same way.

Ionic Compound Names and Formulas
ALL ionic compounds are made of two ions:
• a positive ion (cation)
• a negation ion (anion)
Nov 79:59 AM
To name a compound, simply list the cation name, then the anion name.
Naming compounds
Yes, it's that easy!

Cation (positive ion) can be:
• a metal: name is the same as the atom
• a polyatomic ion (NH4+1): NEVER change the name of a polyatomic ion.
Naming compounds+
Nov 79:59 AM
Cation (positive ion) can be:
• a metal: name is the same as the atom
[If the metal can have more than one charge (many transition metals) use Roman numerals in the name to indicate the charge.]
Naming compounds+
Nov 79:59 AM
Anion (negative ion) can be:
• a nonmetal: change the ending to ide
• a polyatomic ion: NEVER change the name of a polyatomic ion.
Naming compounds
(You never need Roman numerals for anions)
