SITUATION REPORT 1 HIGHLIGHTS Syria: IOM distributed 4,668 hygiene kits and 4,406 house cleaning kits to 35,466 beneficiaries in Damas- cus, Rural Damascus and Homs. Since January 2013, IOM has provided 222,224 IDPs with Non-food items (NFIs). Lebanon: IOM and the High Relief Commission (HRC) of Lebanon profiled 3,855 Lebanese returnees in the North, Bekaa, and Nabaye governorates. Iraq: IOM distributed NFI kits to 1,913 vulnerable Syrian refugees and Iraqi returnees in Dahuk and Basra. Identification and Assessment of Emergency Collective

Shelters for Rehabilitation On 17 July IOM identified

28 collective shelters in Aleppo Governorate in need of

repair and rehabilitation These shelterscenters host

3261 IDPs (622 families) According to UNOCHA there

are an estimated 500000 people in need of shelter in

the governorate which includes those displaced within

Aleppo and IDPs displaced from surrounding gover-

norates

On 17 July IOM technical experts completed a technical

assessment of a collective center in Hama which accom-

modates 120 IDPs (29 families) The assessment showed

that families are living in limited congested space with

serious lack of water and sanitation facilities that in-

crease the prevalence and transmission of poor-hygiene

related infections Priority interventions include con-

structing private washing facilitiesareas as due to over-

crowding many families are living within the same

space

From January to June 2013 IOM identified 245 collec-

tive shelters in need of repair in 7 governorates Damas-

cus Rural Damascus Homs Hama Latakia Hassakah

and Aleppo IOM submitted a call for contractual offers

to repair and rehabilitate these shelters in Damascus

Rural Damascus Homs Hama and Latakia The shelter

repairs will benefit a minimum of 2600 families (13000

individuals)

began to supervise 35 caregivers who

recently received training from the

SOS Childrenrsquos Home in Damascus

This technical supervision will last for

a period of six months The SOS care-

givers are responsible for the health

and well-being of a total of 180 chil-

dren living at the home

During an assessment in May 2013

IOM experts met with the Director

and staff of the SOS Childrenrsquos Home

in Damascus to determine what sup-

port was required SOS staff request-

ed training and technical support Since June

2013 IOM has provided training to 35 SOS

caregivers and on-the-job supervision began on

23 July Supervision includes on-the-job train-

ing and technical support IOM experts organ-

ize regular one-on-one meetings with the care-

givers and encourage SOS staff to provide feed-

back on the process

On 18 July IOM co-chaired the 4th meeting of

the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support

(MHPSS) Technical Reference Group The

group is in the process of mapping all MHPSS

services across the country in order to identify

gaps in services

From 21 ndash 23 July IOM in collaboration

with the Syrian Trust for Development

(STD) provided training to 30 shelter

managers in Damascus STD the trust

responsible for managing shelters in

Damascus identified the participants

for the training The next training

workshop is planned for the end of the

month for 30 shelter managers in Rural

Damascus Workshops are scheduled

across 2 governorates and by the end

of the project a total of 150 shelter

managers will have completed the

training course on how to streamline

psychosocial considerations into the

day-to-day management of collective

shelters

IRAQ OPERATIONS

Border Monitoring IOM staff report no new arri-

vals at Sehela Fyash Khabur and Rabiarsquoa Border

Crossing Points (BCPs) which remain closed The

following BCPs are closed Rabiarsquoa (closed since 3

March 2013) Al-Qaim (closed since 21 October

2012) Al-Waleed (closed since 2 March 2013)

and Fyash Khabur (closed since 15 July)

Building a new life in Iraq Ahmad is a 40-year-old Syrian refugee now living in

Domiz Camp with his wife two young sons and his

niece whose parents were killed in Syria For the

sake of the children Ahmad and his wife decided

to leave Syria in May 2012 to build a new safer life

in Iraq For the first few months in the camp Ah-

mad did not work however he decided in partner-

ship with his neighbor in the camp to establish a

small blacksmith workshop with the tools he had

carried with him from Syria Ahmad had fifteen

years of working as a blacksmith

In January 2013 IOM interviewed Ahmad and registered him for an In-Kind Grant program which included on-

the-job training and the allocation of some tools as part of IOM livelihood assistance support

His situation began to improve only a few days after the assistance begun and his business has been steadily

growing making windows doors roofs and medical compressors Ahmad is the only one making such com-

pressors in Kurdistan and he also recently won a contract to build 70 bathrooms Not only is he helping him-

self and his family but he is now able to provide a valuable service to the vulnerable Syrian refugees in Domiz

Camp and has hired two workers who receive a monthly salary His family is very excited about the changes

and is becoming more and more comfortable in Iraq Ahmad was very proud of what he has accomplished

and he said that his family was very grateful to IOM as the assistance has changed their lives He intends to

expand his business while in Iraq but if the situation in Syria improves he will return home with his family and

reopen his workshop there

Profiling of Lebanese Returnees On 15 July IOM and HRC staff initi-

ated the data collection phase of the joint project to register and pro-

file vulnerable Lebanese returnees from Syria Since 15 July IOM reg-

istered 771 Lebanese returnee households (3855 individuals) in Wadi

Khaled (North governorate) Hermel (Bekaa governorate) and Chebaa

(Nabatiye governorate) IOM plans to register and profile 25000 Leb-

anese returnees by December 2013

Non-Food Item Distribution On 18 July IOM distributed 200 NFI kits

to 200 vulnerable Syrian families (1000 beneficiaries) in Bablieh and

Ghansanieh South Lebanon Each kit contained hygiene dignity and

baby care items The distribution was coordinated at the Babliye New

Elementary School with the support of the local municipality Since

April 2012 IOM has provided 91343 beneficiaries with NFIs and shel-

ter support kits

Psychosocial Support to Affected Communities IOM provides ongoing technical support to DARI Recreational and

Counseling Center for families in Baalbeck DARI which was established by IOM in 2007 to serve returnee and war-

affected Lebanese populations after the 2006 war is currently serving a large number of Syrian refugees and hosting

UNICEF child friendly spaces and several psychosocial trainings provided by other agencies in the Bekaa region IOM is

building the capacities of the core team of the center to enhance direct counseling and psychotherapeutic services

offered by the center by staff from Association pour la Protection de LrsquoEnfant de la Guerre (APEG) and to refurbish the

new premises To date 3617 Syrian refugees Lebanese returnees and members of the host community in the Bekaa

Valley have benefited from services provided at the Center

In addition IOM is providing psychosocial support to affected communities in the South through the deployment of a

mobile multi-disciplinary team The team is made up of a psychologist a social worker an artistic animator and an

educator Staff has been recruited and will undergo training and orientation before deploying to the field in early Au-

gust Psychosocial support services will include recreational activities artistic mediation activities support groups

family support sessions to address the psychosocial consequences of displacement and facilitate referral to specialized

mental health services if necessary

Collective Shelter Assessments IOM continues to monitor the rehabilitation of a temporary collective center in Sara-

fand South Lebanon Work should be completed by mid-August and 180 beneficiaries will benefit from this renovated

building which was initially constructed as a school The owner has agreed to provide the property as a temporary col-

lective center for 12 months Rehabilitation of this center will improve the living conditions of the displaced families by

offering them more dignified and habitable accommodation

IOM is working with the local municipalities in South Lebanon to identify collective centers in need of repair or rehabil-

itation Rehabilitation work will inter alia focus on weatherproofing ensuring adequate water and hygiene facilities

lighting and providing a waste collection system

Transit and Resettlement Assistance During the reporting period IOM provided assistance to 87 refugees from Iraq

who were accepted for resettlement to transit through Lebanon The caseload includes 45 female and 42 male pas-

sengers (15 of whom were children) A land-bridge was set up between Damascus and Beirut in February 2013 after

frequent insecurity prevented convoys to reach Damascus international airport Since February 2013 IOM has provid-

ed transit assistance to 3491 refugees leaving Syria

Transportation services for residents of Adiyaman

camp IOM and partners are assisting Syrian nation-

als to travel to and from medical facilities and social

services through a pilot trans-

portation project which has

been running for three weeks

During the reporting period

712 beneficiaries were assist-

ed to reach medical facilities

and social service centers

Since the start of the project

IOM has provided 2318 bene-

ficiaries (1837 adults and 481 children under

18 years old) with this service The service is

essential for residents as the camp as is located

around 40 kilometers from the city center

Field mission to Kirikhan province IOM in

coordination with the Disaster and Emergency

Management Presidency of Turkey (AFAD)

conducted a field mission to Kirikhan province

in Hatay region According to AFAD there are

2350 Syrian families living in 16 districts in Kiri-

khan During the field mission it was deter-

mined that some districts require support in

terms of basic services The following needs

have been reported as requiring support NFI

provision healthcare and psychosocial sup-

port and education The medical center locat-

ed in Kirikhan which serves Syrian refugees

was prioritized for assistance as there is an ur-

gent need to air condition the general health

clinic the womenrsquos health clinic the pharmacy

and the tent used as a general purpose area

IOM has procured 4 air-conditioning units

which will be delivered to the medical center

by the end of the week

JORDAN OPERATIONS

Emergency Transportation of Refugees

706 Syrian refugees were transported

from the Rabaarsquo al Sarhan Screening

Center to Zarsquoatri camp which shows a

slight increase from the previous re-

porting week where 475 refugees were

transported Since transport operations

began in July 2012 IOM has transported

330788 Syrian refugees from border

areas to camps UNHCR report that in

the past two weeks an average of 500

people per day have left the camp and

voluntarily returned to Syria In mid-

August UNHCR will begin a verification

exercise of refugees living in Zarsquoatri camp

As new arrivals to Rabarsquoa al Sarhan remain low IOM

has diverted some buses to Zarsquoatri camp to assist WFP

to transport camp volunteers to a warehouse in

Mafraq town during Ramadan At the warehouse vol-

unteers package and sort food donations from the lo-

cal community The food is packaged for distribution to

Syrian refugees living in Zarsquoatri camp Food donations

from the local community are received on an ad-hoc

basis In the past week IOM assisted WFP to transport

volunteers to and from the warehouse on two occa-

sions

Health Assistance

Medical Screening 475 refugees were screened upon

arrival at Zarsquoatri camp 18 cases were referred for fol-

low-up treatment

Immunization of New Arrivals During the reporting

period IOM vaccinated 625 refugees (6 months to 30

years) against Measles 157 refugees (newborn to 5

years old) against Polio and 136 children (6 months to

5 years old) received Vitamin A supplements Since

March 2013 54641 Syrian refugees have been im-

munized against Polio and Measles in Zarsquoatri camp

Tuberculosis (TB) Screening and Awareness-Raising

Activities 763 Syrian refugees were screened in the

past week and 3 new cases were identified and all pa-

tients started treatment Active and early TB detection

is provided through a mobile unit (X-Ray vehicle) that

is staffed with a nurse and a doctor Since March 2012

IOM has confirmed 70 suspected cases and is providing

direct observation and follow-up of treatment for 68 of

these cases 14 beneficiaries (9 pulmonary infections

and 5 extrapulmonary infections) have completed their

treatment successfully IOM provides screening for

suspected cases direct observation of treatment and

awareness-raising through a team of 42 healthcare

community workers who work in the camps and urban

communities IOM community workers reached 7570

beneficiaries (4163 men and 3407 women) through

awareness-raising campaigns during the reporting peri-

od Since March 2012 135615 beneficiaries have par-

ticipated in information and awareness-raising ses-

sions IOM continues to work with partners and the

Ministry of Health to screen for and treat active case of

TB and since March 2012 IOM has screened 301997

Syrian refugees and members of the host community

Almost 50 of all beneficiaries screened since March

2012 are children under the age of 15 years old

Non-food Item Distribution In the past week 706

new arrivals received NFIs from IOM upon arrival at

EJC and Zarsquoatri camp While partners provide full NFI

kits duringafter registration IOM identified that new

arrivals were in need of shoes as many lost their shoes

during the border crossing IOM distributes shoes hy-

giene items and refreshments to all new arrivals to

the camps

Support to Camp Management at EJC Since the start

of Ramadan on 9 July IOM reported no new arrivals

to EJC Family reunification and transfers between

Zarsquoatri and EJC are ongoing as well as voluntary re-

turns to Syria from the camp IOM conducts full quali-

ty control of the travel manifests and ensures that

cases are referred to UNHCR before departure from

or entry to EJC At the request of the refugees living

in the camp IOM has organized a forum for refugees

to communicate with humanitarian partners and with

each other IOM staff encourages refugees to share

their experiences and IOM provides training on using

communication skills to resolve conflict through dia-

logue so tensions within the resident community can

be identified discussed and resolved before there is

recourse to violence or protest IOM is coordinating

with partners to provide capacity building sessions for

staff working at the camp in areas of protection re-

productive health gender equality and SPHERE

standards IOM continues to conduct capacity build-

ing and life-skills training which include sessions on

communication team building and leadership for

residents of the camp in cooperation and coordina-

tion with the UAE Red Crescent There is no expan-

sion plan for EJC at present as IOM and partners work

to finalize the construction of Azraq camp An open-

ing date for Azraq camp is yet to be announced

Repatriation Assistance to Stranded Migrants from

Syria On 22 July 2 stranded migrants were repatriat-

ed by IOM to Venezuela IOM is currently accommo-

dating one family (5 members) from Egypt within the

reception center at Zarsquoatri The family is provided

with medical assistance mattresses hygiene kits

NFIs and food until arrangements have been made

for their repatriation to Egypt Since the start of the

crisis IOM has assisted 17 stranded migrants dis-

placed from Syria to return to their countries of origin

from Jordan

In January 2013 IOM interviewed Ahmad and registered him for an In-Kind Grant program which included on-

the-job training and the allocation of some tools as part of IOM livelihood assistance support

His situation began to improve only a few days after the assistance begun and his business has been steadily

growing making windows doors roofs and medical compressors Ahmad is the only one making such com-

pressors in Kurdistan and he also recently won a contract to build 70 bathrooms Not only is he helping him-

self and his family but he is now able to provide a valuable service to the vulnerable Syrian refugees in Domiz

Camp and has hired two workers who receive a monthly salary His family is very excited about the changes

and is becoming more and more comfortable in Iraq Ahmad was very proud of what he has accomplished

and he said that his family was very grateful to IOM as the assistance has changed their lives He intends to

expand his business while in Iraq but if the situation in Syria improves he will return home with his family and

reopen his workshop there

Profiling of Lebanese Returnees On 15 July IOM and HRC staff initi-

ated the data collection phase of the joint project to register and pro-

file vulnerable Lebanese returnees from Syria Since 15 July IOM reg-

istered 771 Lebanese returnee households (3855 individuals) in Wadi

Khaled (North governorate) Hermel (Bekaa governorate) and Chebaa

(Nabatiye governorate) IOM plans to register and profile 25000 Leb-

anese returnees by December 2013

Non-Food Item Distribution On 18 July IOM distributed 200 NFI kits

to 200 vulnerable Syrian families (1000 beneficiaries) in Bablieh and

Ghansanieh South Lebanon Each kit contained hygiene dignity and

baby care items The distribution was coordinated at the Babliye New

Elementary School with the support of the local municipality Since

April 2012 IOM has provided 91343 beneficiaries with NFIs and shel-

Psychosocial Support to Affected Communities IOM provides ongoing technical support to DARI Recreational and

Counseling Center for families in Baalbeck DARI which was established by IOM in 2007 to serve returnee and war-

affected Lebanese populations after the 2006 war is currently serving a large number of Syrian refugees and hosting

UNICEF child friendly spaces and several psychosocial trainings provided by other agencies in the Bekaa region IOM is

building the capacities of the core team of the center to enhance direct counseling and psychotherapeutic services

offered by the center by staff from Association pour la Protection de LrsquoEnfant de la Guerre (APEG) and to refurbish the

new premises To date 3617 Syrian refugees Lebanese returnees and members of the host community in the Bekaa

Valley have benefited from services provided at the Center

In addition IOM is providing psychosocial support to affected communities in the South through the deployment of a

mobile multi-disciplinary team The team is made up of a psychologist a social worker an artistic animator and an

educator Staff has been recruited and will undergo training and orientation before deploying to the field in early Au-

gust Psychosocial support services will include recreational activities artistic mediation activities support groups

family support sessions to address the psychosocial consequences of displacement and facilitate referral to specialized

mental health services if necessary

Collective Shelter Assessments IOM continues to monitor the rehabilitation of a temporary collective center in Sara-

fand South Lebanon Work should be completed by mid-August and 180 beneficiaries will benefit from this renovated

building which was initially constructed as a school The owner has agreed to provide the property as a temporary col-

lective center for 12 months Rehabilitation of this center will improve the living conditions of the displaced families by

offering them more dignified and habitable accommodation

IOM is working with the local municipalities in South Lebanon to identify collective centers in need of repair or rehabil-

itation Rehabilitation work will inter alia focus on weatherproofing ensuring adequate water and hygiene facilities

lighting and providing a waste collection system

Transit and Resettlement Assistance During the reporting period IOM provided assistance to 87 refugees from Iraq

who were accepted for resettlement to transit through Lebanon The caseload includes 45 female and 42 male pas-

sengers (15 of whom were children) A land-bridge was set up between Damascus and Beirut in February 2013 after

frequent insecurity prevented convoys to reach Damascus international airport Since February 2013 IOM has provid-

ed transit assistance to 3491 refugees leaving Syria

Transportation services for residents of Adiyaman

camp IOM and partners are assisting Syrian nation-

als to travel to and from medical facilities and social

services through a pilot trans-

portation project which has

been running for three weeks

During the reporting period

712 beneficiaries were assist-

ed to reach medical facilities

and social service centers

Since the start of the project

IOM has provided 2318 bene-

ficiaries (1837 adults and 481 children under

18 years old) with this service The service is

essential for residents as the camp as is located

around 40 kilometers from the city center

Field mission to Kirikhan province IOM in

coordination with the Disaster and Emergency

Management Presidency of Turkey (AFAD)

conducted a field mission to Kirikhan province

in Hatay region According to AFAD there are

2350 Syrian families living in 16 districts in Kiri-

khan During the field mission it was deter-

mined that some districts require support in

terms of basic services The following needs

have been reported as requiring support NFI

provision healthcare and psychosocial sup-

port and education The medical center locat-

ed in Kirikhan which serves Syrian refugees

was prioritized for assistance as there is an ur-

gent need to air condition the general health

clinic the womenrsquos health clinic the pharmacy

and the tent used as a general purpose area

IOM has procured 4 air-conditioning units

which will be delivered to the medical center

by the end of the week

people per day have left the camp and

voluntarily returned to Syria In mid-

exercise of refugees living in Zarsquoatri camp

As new arrivals to Rabarsquoa al Sarhan remain low IOM

has diverted some buses to Zarsquoatri camp to assist WFP

to transport camp volunteers to a warehouse in

Mafraq town during Ramadan At the warehouse vol-

unteers package and sort food donations from the lo-

cal community The food is packaged for distribution to

Syrian refugees living in Zarsquoatri camp Food donations

from the local community are received on an ad-hoc

basis In the past week IOM assisted WFP to transport

volunteers to and from the warehouse on two occa-

Medical Screening 475 refugees were screened upon

arrival at Zarsquoatri camp 18 cases were referred for fol-

low-up treatment

Immunization of New Arrivals During the reporting

period IOM vaccinated 625 refugees (6 months to 30

years) against Measles 157 refugees (newborn to 5

years old) against Polio and 136 children (6 months to

5 years old) received Vitamin A supplements Since

March 2013 54641 Syrian refugees have been im-

munized against Polio and Measles in Zarsquoatri camp

Tuberculosis (TB) Screening and Awareness-Raising

Activities 763 Syrian refugees were screened in the

past week and 3 new cases were identified and all pa-

tients started treatment Active and early TB detection

is provided through a mobile unit (X-Ray vehicle) that

is staffed with a nurse and a doctor Since March 2012

IOM has confirmed 70 suspected cases and is providing

direct observation and follow-up of treatment for 68 of

these cases 14 beneficiaries (9 pulmonary infections

and 5 extrapulmonary infections) have completed their

treatment successfully IOM provides screening for

suspected cases direct observation of treatment and

awareness-raising through a team of 42 healthcare

community workers who work in the camps and urban

communities IOM community workers reached 7570

beneficiaries (4163 men and 3407 women) through

awareness-raising campaigns during the reporting peri-

od Since March 2012 135615 beneficiaries have par-

ticipated in information and awareness-raising ses-

sions IOM continues to work with partners and the

Ministry of Health to screen for and treat active case of

TB and since March 2012 IOM has screened 301997

Syrian refugees and members of the host community

Almost 50 of all beneficiaries screened since March

ty control of the travel manifests and ensures that

cases are referred to UNHCR before departure from

in the camp IOM has organized a forum for refugees

to communicate with humanitarian partners and with

each other IOM staff encourages refugees to share

their experiences and IOM provides training on using

communication skills to resolve conflict through dia-

logue so tensions within the resident community can

recourse to violence or protest IOM is coordinating

with partners to provide capacity building sessions for

staff working at the camp in areas of protection re-

productive health gender equality and SPHERE

standards IOM continues to conduct capacity build-

ing and life-skills training which include sessions on

residents of the camp in cooperation and coordina-

tion with the UAE Red Crescent There is no expan-

sion plan for EJC at present as IOM and partners work

to finalize the construction of Azraq camp An open-

ing date for Azraq camp is yet to be announced

Repatriation Assistance to Stranded Migrants from

Syria On 22 July 2 stranded migrants were repatriat-

ed by IOM to Venezuela IOM is currently accommo-

dating one family (5 members) from Egypt within the

reception center at Zarsquoatri The family is provided

with medical assistance mattresses hygiene kits

NFIs and food until arrangements have been made

for their repatriation to Egypt Since the start of the

crisis IOM has assisted 17 stranded migrants dis-

placed from Syria to return to their countries of origin

from Jordan

Communities On 23 July IOM staff

began to supervise 35 caregivers who

recently received training from the

SOS Childrenrsquos Home in Damascus

This technical supervision will last for

a period of six months The SOS care-

givers are responsible for the health

and well-being of a total of 180 chil-

dren living at the home

During an assessment in May 2013

IOM experts met with the Director

and staff of the SOS Childrenrsquos Home

in Damascus to determine what sup-

port was required SOS staff request-

ed training and technical support Since June

2013 IOM has provided training to 35 SOS

caregivers and on-the-job supervision began on

23 July Supervision includes on-the-job train-

ing and technical support IOM experts organ-

ize regular one-on-one meetings with the care-

givers and encourage SOS staff to provide feed-

back on the process

On 18 July IOM co-chaired the 4th meeting of

the Mental Health and Psychosocial Support

(MHPSS) Technical Reference Group The

group is in the process of mapping all MHPSS

services across the country in order to identify

gaps in services

From 21 ndash 23 July IOM in collaboration

with the Syrian Trust for Development

(STD) provided training to 30 shelter

managers in Damascus STD the trust

responsible for managing shelters in

Damascus identified the participants

for the training The next training

workshop is planned for the end of the

month for 30 shelter managers in Rural

Damascus Workshops are scheduled

across 2 governorates and by the end

of the project a total of 150 shelter

managers will have completed the

training course on how to streamline

psychosocial considerations into the

day-to-day management of collective

Building a new life in Iraq Ahmad is a 40-year-old Syrian refugee now living in

Domiz Camp with his wife two young sons and his

niece whose parents were killed in Syria For the

sake of the children Ahmad and his wife decided

to leave Syria in May 2012 to build a new safer life

in Iraq For the first few months in the camp Ah-

mad did not work however he decided in partner-

ship with his neighbor in the camp to establish a

small blacksmith workshop with the tools he had

carried with him from Syria Ahmad had fifteen

Building a new life in Iraq Ahmad is a 40-year-old Syrian refugee now living in

Domiz Camp with his wife two young sons and his

niece whose parents were killed in Syria For the

sake of the children Ahmad and his wife decided

to leave Syria in May 2012 to build a new safer life

in Iraq For the first few months in the camp Ah-

mad did not work however he decided in partner-

ship with his neighbor in the camp to establish a

small blacksmith workshop with the tools he had

carried with him from Syria Ahmad had fifteen

years of working as a blacksmith

In January 2013 IOM interviewed Ahmad and registered him for an In-Kind Grant program which included on-

the-job training and the allocation of some tools as part of IOM livelihood assistance support

His situation began to improve only a few days after the assistance begun and his business has been steadily

growing making windows doors roofs and medical compressors Ahmad is the only one making such com-

pressors in Kurdistan and he also recently won a contract to build 70 bathrooms Not only is he helping him-

self and his family but he is now able to provide a valuable service to the vulnerable Syrian refugees in Domiz

Camp and has hired two workers who receive a monthly salary His family is very excited about the changes

and is becoming more and more comfortable in Iraq Ahmad was very proud of what he has accomplished

and he said that his family was very grateful to IOM as the assistance has changed their lives He intends to

expand his business while in Iraq but if the situation in Syria improves he will return home with his family and

reopen his workshop there

ated the data collection phase of the joint project to register and pro-

file vulnerable Lebanese returnees from Syria Since 15 July IOM reg-

istered 771 Lebanese returnee households (3855 individuals) in Wadi

Khaled (North governorate) Hermel (Bekaa governorate) and Chebaa

(Nabatiye governorate) IOM plans to register and profile 25000 Leb-

anese returnees by December 2013

Non-Food Item Distribution On 18 July IOM distributed 200 NFI kits

to 200 vulnerable Syrian families (1000 beneficiaries) in Bablieh and

Ghansanieh South Lebanon Each kit contained hygiene dignity and

baby care items The distribution was coordinated at the Babliye New

Elementary School with the support of the local municipality Since

April 2012 IOM has provided 91343 beneficiaries with NFIs and shel-

ter support kits

Psychosocial Support to Affected Communities IOM provides ongoing technical support to DARI Recreational and

Counseling Center for families in Baalbeck DARI which was established by IOM in 2007 to serve returnee and war-

affected Lebanese populations after the 2006 war is currently serving a large number of Syrian refugees and hosting

UNICEF child friendly spaces and several psychosocial trainings provided by other agencies in the Bekaa region IOM is

building the capacities of the core team of the center to enhance direct counseling and psychotherapeutic services

offered by the center by staff from Association pour la Protection de LrsquoEnfant de la Guerre (APEG) and to refurbish the

new premises To date 3617 Syrian refugees Lebanese returnees and members of the host community in the Bekaa

Valley have benefited from services provided at the Center

In addition IOM is providing psychosocial support to affected communities in the South through the deployment of a

mobile multi-disciplinary team The team is made up of a psychologist a social worker an artistic animator and an

educator Staff has been recruited and will undergo training and orientation before deploying to the field in early Au-

gust Psychosocial support services will include recreational activities artistic mediation activities support groups

family support sessions to address the psychosocial consequences of displacement and facilitate referral to specialized

mental health services if necessary

Collective Shelter Assessments IOM continues to monitor the rehabilitation of a temporary collective center in Sara-

fand South Lebanon Work should be completed by mid-August and 180 beneficiaries will benefit from this renovated

building which was initially constructed as a school The owner has agreed to provide the property as a temporary col-

lective center for 12 months Rehabilitation of this center will improve the living conditions of the displaced families by

offering them more dignified and habitable accommodation

IOM is working with the local municipalities in South Lebanon to identify collective centers in need of repair or rehabil-

itation Rehabilitation work will inter alia focus on weatherproofing ensuring adequate water and hygiene facilities

lighting and providing a waste collection system

Transit and Resettlement Assistance During the reporting period IOM provided assistance to 87 refugees from Iraq

who were accepted for resettlement to transit through Lebanon The caseload includes 45 female and 42 male pas-

sengers (15 of whom were children) A land-bridge was set up between Damascus and Beirut in February 2013 after

frequent insecurity prevented convoys to reach Damascus international airport Since February 2013 IOM has provid-

ed transit assistance to 3491 refugees leaving Syria

Transportation services for residents of Adiyaman

camp IOM and partners are assisting Syrian nation-

als to travel to and from medical facilities and social

services through a pilot trans-

portation project which has

been running for three weeks

During the reporting period

712 beneficiaries were assist-

ed to reach medical facilities

and social service centers

Since the start of the project

IOM has provided 2318 bene-

ficiaries (1837 adults and 481 children under

18 years old) with this service The service is

essential for residents as the camp as is located

around 40 kilometers from the city center

Field mission to Kirikhan province IOM in

coordination with the Disaster and Emergency

Management Presidency of Turkey (AFAD)

conducted a field mission to Kirikhan province

in Hatay region According to AFAD there are

2350 Syrian families living in 16 districts in Kiri-

khan During the field mission it was deter-

mined that some districts require support in

terms of basic services The following needs

have been reported as requiring support NFI

provision healthcare and psychosocial sup-

port and education The medical center locat-

ed in Kirikhan which serves Syrian refugees

was prioritized for assistance as there is an ur-

gent need to air condition the general health

clinic the womenrsquos health clinic the pharmacy

and the tent used as a general purpose area

IOM has procured 4 air-conditioning units

which will be delivered to the medical center

by the end of the week

706 Syrian refugees were transported

Center to Zarsquoatri camp which shows a

slight increase from the previous re-

porting week where 475 refugees were

transported Since transport operations

began in July 2012 IOM has transported

330788 Syrian refugees from border

areas to camps UNHCR report that in

the past two weeks an average of 500

people per day have left the camp and

voluntarily returned to Syria In mid-

August UNHCR will begin a verification

exercise of refugees living in Zarsquoatri camp

As new arrivals to Rabarsquoa al Sarhan remain low IOM

has diverted some buses to Zarsquoatri camp to assist WFP

to transport camp volunteers to a warehouse in

Mafraq town during Ramadan At the warehouse vol-

unteers package and sort food donations from the lo-

cal community The food is packaged for distribution to

Syrian refugees living in Zarsquoatri camp Food donations

from the local community are received on an ad-hoc

basis In the past week IOM assisted WFP to transport

volunteers to and from the warehouse on two occa-

sions

Health Assistance

Medical Screening 475 refugees were screened upon

arrival at Zarsquoatri camp 18 cases were referred for fol-

low-up treatment

Immunization of New Arrivals During the reporting

period IOM vaccinated 625 refugees (6 months to 30

years) against Measles 157 refugees (newborn to 5

years old) against Polio and 136 children (6 months to

5 years old) received Vitamin A supplements Since

March 2013 54641 Syrian refugees have been im-

munized against Polio and Measles in Zarsquoatri camp

Tuberculosis (TB) Screening and Awareness-Raising

Activities 763 Syrian refugees were screened in the

past week and 3 new cases were identified and all pa-

tients started treatment Active and early TB detection

is provided through a mobile unit (X-Ray vehicle) that

is staffed with a nurse and a doctor Since March 2012

IOM has confirmed 70 suspected cases and is providing

direct observation and follow-up of treatment for 68 of

these cases 14 beneficiaries (9 pulmonary infections

and 5 extrapulmonary infections) have completed their

treatment successfully IOM provides screening for

suspected cases direct observation of treatment and

awareness-raising through a team of 42 healthcare

community workers who work in the camps and urban

communities IOM community workers reached 7570

beneficiaries (4163 men and 3407 women) through

awareness-raising campaigns during the reporting peri-

od Since March 2012 135615 beneficiaries have par-

ticipated in information and awareness-raising ses-

sions IOM continues to work with partners and the

Ministry of Health to screen for and treat active case of

TB and since March 2012 IOM has screened 301997

Syrian refugees and members of the host community

Almost 50 of all beneficiaries screened since March

Transportation services for residents of Adiyaman

camp IOM and partners are assisting Syrian nation-

als to travel to and from medical facilities and social

services through a pilot trans-

portation project which has

been running for three weeks

During the reporting period

712 beneficiaries were assist-

ed to reach medical facilities

and social service centers

Since the start of the project

IOM has provided 2318 bene-

ficiaries (1837 adults and 481 children under

18 years old) with this service The service is

essential for residents as the camp as is located

around 40 kilometers from the city center

Field mission to Kirikhan province IOM in

coordination with the Disaster and Emergency

Management Presidency of Turkey (AFAD)

conducted a field mission to Kirikhan province

in Hatay region According to AFAD there are

2350 Syrian families living in 16 districts in Kiri-

khan During the field mission it was deter-

mined that some districts require support in

terms of basic services The following needs

have been reported as requiring support NFI

provision healthcare and psychosocial sup-

port and education The medical center locat-

ed in Kirikhan which serves Syrian refugees

was prioritized for assistance as there is an ur-

gent need to air condition the general health

clinic the womenrsquos health clinic the pharmacy

and the tent used as a general purpose area

IOM has procured 4 air-conditioning units

which will be delivered to the medical center

by the end of the week

JORDAN OPERATIONS

Emergency Transportation of Refugees

706 Syrian refugees were transported

from the Rabaarsquo al Sarhan Screening

Center to Zarsquoatri camp which shows a

slight increase from the previous re-

porting week where 475 refugees were

transported Since transport operations

began in July 2012 IOM has transported

330788 Syrian refugees from border

areas to camps UNHCR report that in

the past two weeks an average of 500

people per day have left the camp and

voluntarily returned to Syria In mid-

August UNHCR will begin a verification

exercise of refugees living in Zarsquoatri camp

As new arrivals to Rabarsquoa al Sarhan remain low IOM

has diverted some buses to Zarsquoatri camp to assist WFP

to transport camp volunteers to a warehouse in

Mafraq town during Ramadan At the warehouse vol-

unteers package and sort food donations from the lo-

cal community The food is packaged for distribution to

Syrian refugees living in Zarsquoatri camp Food donations

from the local community are received on an ad-hoc

basis In the past week IOM assisted WFP to transport

volunteers to and from the warehouse on two occa-

sions

Health Assistance

Medical Screening 475 refugees were screened upon

arrival at Zarsquoatri camp 18 cases were referred for fol-

low-up treatment

Immunization of New Arrivals During the reporting

period IOM vaccinated 625 refugees (6 months to 30

years) against Measles 157 refugees (newborn to 5

years old) against Polio and 136 children (6 months to

5 years old) received Vitamin A supplements Since

March 2013 54641 Syrian refugees have been im-

munized against Polio and Measles in Zarsquoatri camp

Tuberculosis (TB) Screening and Awareness-Raising

Activities 763 Syrian refugees were screened in the

past week and 3 new cases were identified and all pa-

tients started treatment Active and early TB detection

is provided through a mobile unit (X-Ray vehicle) that

is staffed with a nurse and a doctor Since March 2012

IOM has confirmed 70 suspected cases and is providing

direct observation and follow-up of treatment for 68 of

these cases 14 beneficiaries (9 pulmonary infections

and 5 extrapulmonary infections) have completed their

treatment successfully IOM provides screening for

suspected cases direct observation of treatment and

awareness-raising through a team of 42 healthcare

community workers who work in the camps and urban

communities IOM community workers reached 7570

beneficiaries (4163 men and 3407 women) through

awareness-raising campaigns during the reporting peri-

od Since March 2012 135615 beneficiaries have par-

ticipated in information and awareness-raising ses-

sions IOM continues to work with partners and the

Ministry of Health to screen for and treat active case of

TB and since March 2012 IOM has screened 301997

Syrian refugees and members of the host community

Almost 50 of all beneficiaries screened since March

2012 are children under the age of 15 years old

Non-food Item Distribution In the past week 706

new arrivals received NFIs from IOM upon arrival at

EJC and Zarsquoatri camp While partners provide full NFI

kits duringafter registration IOM identified that new

arrivals were in need of shoes as many lost their shoes

during the border crossing IOM distributes shoes hy-

giene items and refreshments to all new arrivals to

the camps

ty control of the travel manifests and ensures that

cases are referred to UNHCR before departure from

or entry to EJC At the request of the refugees living

in the camp IOM has organized a forum for refugees

to communicate with humanitarian partners and with

each other IOM staff encourages refugees to share

their experiences and IOM provides training on using

communication skills to resolve conflict through dia-

logue so tensions within the resident community can

be identified discussed and resolved before there is

recourse to violence or protest IOM is coordinating

with partners to provide capacity building sessions for

staff working at the camp in areas of protection re-

productive health gender equality and SPHERE

standards IOM continues to conduct capacity build-

ing and life-skills training which include sessions on

communication team building and leadership for

residents of the camp in cooperation and coordina-

tion with the UAE Red Crescent There is no expan-

sion plan for EJC at present as IOM and partners work

to finalize the construction of Azraq camp An open-

ing date for Azraq camp is yet to be announced

Repatriation Assistance to Stranded Migrants from

Syria On 22 July 2 stranded migrants were repatriat-

ed by IOM to Venezuela IOM is currently accommo-

dating one family (5 members) from Egypt within the

reception center at Zarsquoatri The family is provided

with medical assistance mattresses hygiene kits

NFIs and food until arrangements have been made

for their repatriation to Egypt Since the start of the

crisis IOM has assisted 17 stranded migrants dis-

placed from Syria to return to their countries of origin

from Jordan
