Important words from a truly great man- Shimon Peres.

A meaningful life.

“Keep working. Keep reading. Keep learning. Keep your curiosity. Beengaged. Dream great.

Wars are not necessary.

If you want a better future for you, for your people, for your own children-go and change it. Nobody will do it instead of you.

Be a hopeful, powerful human being and serve your fellow man. It’s agreat pleasure to do it.

You can serve the people if you are trustful, if your word is good, if yourpromise is a promise, then you’ll find that your life is really meaningful.”

Shimon Peres was a great friend of Hadassah. He understood thatHadassah women have always known the power of Tikun Olam.Hadassah offers us the opportunity to act on our ideals, our hopes andour dreams.

There are many ways Hadassah can help you put your ideals to work.Your Chapters and Brooklyn Region need members to join our ExecutiveBoards and committees to help us plan and carry out our educationaland fundraising activities. There are volunteer opportunities at all levelsof experience and time commitment. My sincerest wishes to all of my Hadassah familyfor a Happy & Healthy Sweet New Year.We celebrated the culmination of a very

successful year of fundraising at the Major DonorEvent on Sunday, October 30th at the lovely homeof Adriane and George Adam. One of the featured guest speakers was Dr. David

Kaylie of Duke University. A main clinical interest ofhis is the treatment of acoustic neuromas. As a co-director of the Duke Skull Base Center, he isdeveloping novel ways to preserve and restorehearing after acoustic neuroma surgery usingcochlear implants. According to Dr. Kaylie, "hearingand balance are among the most fundamental wayspeople interact with the world. Whether it issurgery to remove a complex tumor at the base ofthe skull, placing a cochlear implant to restorehearing to the deaf or diagnosing a complexbalance issue, I am motivated to work with patientsand customize solutions to their personal problem."His presentation was followed by a Q&A. Dr. Kaylie'soverview of his work was fascinating and extremelyinteresting.Joyce Rabin, Hadassah International Chair, was

our second speaker of the afternoon. Joyce bringswith her a vast knowledge of many Hadassah

portfolios. Several of the positions that she has heldover the years were: past National Vice President,HMO Chair & Board of Directors, & HMO TowerCampaign Coordinator, just to list a few. Ms. Rabingave us an update on the latest happenings atHadassah Hospital. She is part of a four generationfamily of Life Members, bringing with themdedication, commitment and devotion to ourcommon goal.We hope that many more of you will become

members of our Chai Society for the upcoming year. The three levels of membership are: Chai-$360;Silver-$536; or as a Keeper-$1,000. Yourcontribution can be made in one payment or ininstallments. Coupons are available in the bulletin. Our latest member to join the Chai Society, Rachel

SHABBAT ZACHORSara Sloan

March 19, 2016 was observed as Hadassah Shabbatat Kensington’s fully egalitarian Flatbush JewishCenter. Rabbi Lev Meirowitz Nelson asked Sara Sloan, chair of Brooklyn Hadassah Archive Project, formerRegion Board member, life member and frequentdavener at FJC to serve as darshanit that Shabbat. The very well received drash focused on Hadassah’srole in empowering Jewish women in an era wherethere were fewer other options for women’sleadership. Mention was made of the fact that hadHenrietta Szold been living today she might well havebeen a professor at the Jewish Theological Seminary, not the secretary to a founder. Hadassah’slongstanding interest in women’s health wasmentioned as well as its pioneering work insupporting issues as diverse as abortion rights, medical testing on women and heart health.FJC is a lay led congregation. Many Hadassah

members were among those who read Torah, haftorahand served as baali Tefillah that Shabbat. It is a fittingtribute to Henrietta Szold who was denied an equalplace in Jewish life as a woman that on the Shabbathonoring her, women participated as equals in leadingand teaching during a Shabbat service.During Kiddush, congregant Eliana Meirowitz

Nelson, also the Coordinator of Every Step Counts forHadassah National, spoke with great passion aboutHadassah’s Every Step Counts. Many of those whowere at Kiddush are now counting their steps.

In June of 2007, the first of what wouldbecome an annual concert event for HadassahBrooklyn Region took place at the closingmeeting of the Naomi Hannah Yassky Chapterat the Jewish Center of Kings Highway. Enidand Jack Benezra, who were and still arementors to more than several HadarFoundation Scholarship winners, thought itwould be fun to make a shiddach between theHadar Foundation and, at first, Enid’s HadassahChapter. The following year theHadar/Hadassah concerts took off for BrooklynRegion, giving many Hadar Scholars anopportunity to perform for our “Circle of Life”Chapters, and for the past roughly six years orso, all of Brooklyn Region. This year’s concert began the way most have

in the past, with greetings from our President,Barbara Katz, and program Chair MarleneLempert, and singing of Hatikvah and The StarSpangled Banner by Enid and Jack Benezra. Amoving and informative talk by Barbara Katzon Hadassah’s research and service tohumanity brought us up to date on the latestHadassah accomplishments. Enid and RaffleChairs Eleene Schwartz and Myra Schwartz didthe lovely table decorations in red, white andblue. Our ears and eyes were tantalized by five

amazing performers, four of whom were newto us and one who is a special and dedicatedfavorite. Enid and Jack Benezra, who producedthe concert, emceed it with their usualprofessional flair. Mezzo Soprano, NatashaThweatt serenaded us with three classicBroadway tunes with her sweet voice andcharismatic delivery. Nineteen year old actor,Xavier Pacheco impressed us with his broadrange of talent with a Shakespeareanmonologue, a reading of Pablo Neruda’s poetryin English and Spanish, and a bravuraperformance of a Rap piece from the BroadwayBlockbuster “Hamilton.” Soprano, Stacey

Canterbury, a special guest artist fromBrooklyn’s Regina Opera, bowled us over withher big gorgeous voice in three selectionsranging from Broadway to Operetta to GrandOpera. Pianist, Rebecca Ehren, a recentgraduate of Indiana University did an incredibleperformance as both accompanist for our twobeautiful female singers and as soloist in herown right. Our perennial favorite, singer/actor,Edmerald Gan romanced us with two songs, one in Spanish, and one in Tagalog. Edmerald,as always, played his own accompaniments. Our Edmerald has performed in all tenHadar/Hadassah concerts with an incredibleamount of talent, dedication and devotion tothe members of Hadassah Brooklyn Region. Itshould be noted that he did this year’sperformance even though he was sufferingfrom a severe case of bronchitis. He is a realtrouper!Certificates were presented to all five

performers by Enid and Jack Benezra, with aspecial one to Edmerald Gan for his ten yearsof dedicated and talent-filled performances forHadassah Brooklyn Region. A wonderfulafternoon was had by all, topped off by ourraffle drawing.

Todah Rabah to all those listed below (in noparticular order) for making this a stellarafternoon:

JOURNEY OF AN ASSOCIATE IN ATLANTALyle Silversmith

I attended this convention with my wife Judi who is

a past President of Brooklyn Hadassah and went

with her to the plenary sessions.

The Associates held a meeting on Tuesday morning.

Besides the usual business, men's health issues were

discussed. We also heard from the HMO Director

General and Richard Waller. Waller spoke about the

current climate of BDS (divestment of investment

funds from Israel) on college campuses.

This issue was also addressed in a breakout session

by Janet Young, who pointed out that the history

textbooks that are used today are substantially

devoid of Jewish history and often portray the mid-

east crisis from a Palestinian point of view.

HADASSAH REVIEWS WHATEVER TEXTBOOKS THEY CAN

AND JANET URGED HADASSAH MEMBERS TO LOOK

THROUGH WHATEVER HISTORY BOOKS ARE USED TO TEACH

STUDENTS IN THEIR FAMILY FOR OMISSIONS ABOUT JEWISH

HISTORY AND OUTRIGHT DISTORTIONS. FOR INSTANCE,WHEN WRITING ABOUT WORLD WAR II, THE HOLOCAUST

IS EITHER OMITTED COMPLETELY OR MENTIONED IN LESS

THAN A FULL SENTENCE AS JUST ONE OF MANY

OCCURRENCES OF WW II. SOME MID-EAST MAPS SHOW

ONLY PALESTINE AS IF ISRAEL DOES NOT EXIST. JANET

SHOULD BE CONTACTED WHENEVER DISTORTIONS OR

OMISSIONS ARE SEEN IN A TEXTBOOK.Janet pointed out that the lack of Jewish identity of

many Jewish students is due in part to the fact that

they learn almost nothing or absolutely nothing in

their history courses about the participation of the

Jewish people. Beyond that, there are Jewish

students who participate in the anti-Israel

divestment movement (which in most cases turns

out to be anti-Semitic as well). Janet mentioned

that publishers are often very open to make

appropriate changes in their textbooks.

It was pleasant to be surrounded by a lot of

intelligent women and in addition to listen to a

presentation by Gwyneth Paltrow about her Jewish

identity and her descent from 33 Rabbis.

We then left to make a seven hour journey back to

New York, elongated by severe weather in New

York. Ironically, on our way home we noticed that

the current issue of Hadassah magazine had an

article about visiting Atlanta.

Brooklyn Region News 7 Fall 2016

There were over 900 participants in the 2016Hadassah Convention in Atlanta. The following aresome highlights: The “Iron Dome” has become a way to quickly

refer to the defense system deployed when Israel isunder attack. In fact, it is a multi-tiered system, whose components can be nested to interceptdifferent sizes/ranges of incoming missiles aimed atthe same area, or deployed alone. The “Iron Dome”is the name assigned to the original system.“David’s Sling” (as in David and Goliath) wasdeveloped next. The newest, “Arrow” system, hasthe highest interceptor range and its variousversions continue to be developed and tested.Myriad scenarios are programed into their systems,so reaction time to alerts of incoming missiles isshort. Even after launch, interception solutions arestill being sifted and selected by the operator. As ofthe presentation at the Hadassah Convention inJuly, there have been over 2,000 successfulinterceptions, with a success rate of 91%. EtanBarak, Founder and CEO of mPrest Systems, creatorof the cybersecurity software, believes thatmotivation to fire on Israel will eventually go downonce Israel reaches a 98% interception rate.Components of this system can be flexibly

adapted to civilian use, such as protecting a city’selectric grid against terrorist malware or systemwide failure. The Israel-US Binational IndustrialResearch and Development Foundation hasawarded a grant of $900,000 to the New YorkPower Authority and Israel’s mPrest, to developsoftware that will detect transformer failure. mPresthas also garnered $20 million in investments fromGE Ventures and OurCrowd for development ofcybersecurity software. In closing, Barak declared"Hadassah is the Iron Dome of Israel’s HealthSystem!"Until recently, women’s medical care was “bikini

medicine” according to cardiologist NanetteWenger, who presented during Advocating forGender Equity in Medical Research: Doctors onlytreated areas of a woman’s body that could becovered by a bikini. Although one in three womenwill develop heart disease, differences in aorticstructure and outward symptoms have only recentlybeen acknowledged. That, coupled with the statisticthat one in every four households has a member

with Alzheimers, two thirds of which are women, makes it surprising that, until recent legislationthanks to lobbying, heart disease and Alzheimersresearch was done on male mice. (One reason givenwas that female mice don’t like to be caged.)It is now a requirement to acknowledge the sex of

subjects in research studies, be it cells, tissues, animals or humans. Clinical trials must also state thesex of all subjects in reports. The presentersencourage women to sign up for clinical trials. Eventhe placebo groups do better, because theyroutinely meet with professionals and report ontheir health. Therefore, there is oversight even forthis group.Malia Litman, diagnosed with MS in 1999, spoke

after one of the dinners to thank Dr. DimitriosKarussis of Hadassah Hospital. Along with membersof my mission to Israel the following month, I hadthe opportunity to meet with Malia in her hospitalroom in Ein Kerem. She had received her third stemcell infusion the day before. The doctor hadharvested bone marrow from her hip late in 2015and injected her own stem stem cells directly intothe cerebro-spinal fluid of her damaged site. Usinga patient's own cells eliminates rejection. She hashad a marked improvement in energy, speech andmobility. Mass General conducted a two yearreplication study and confirmed his results in July.Dr. Sandra Alfonsi and Janet Young presented

Curriculum Watch: Fact, Fiction Innuendo or Bias? They explained that inaccuracies and omissions inschool textbooks, including maps, present a skewedview of history. For example, a McMillan textdescribed the six million lost in the Holocaust as"collateral damage." The contributions of Jews tothe Civil Rights Movement are frequently omitted.Twenty-two states are presently vetting theirtextbooks. Some publishers have corrected errors inlater editions, but purchasing of newer editions isoften too costly for the schools. We were urged toscan our family's school books for misinformationand to use the template, distributed by Janet andavailable on line, to alert Curriculum Watch. At theend of their presentation, Ellen Hershkin, NationalPresident of Hadassah, shared that she, herself, hadfound something in My Weekly Reader.

Hadassah Mission to IsraelCecelia Kramer

Real Men Don’t Buy Women; I am a Person, not an Object; I am not for Sale! Printed on theaprons, t shirts and fabric containers they have sewn, are these statements, chosen by thepresent and former prostitutes of Turning the Tables, an organization funded in part by TheHadassah Foundation, as well as the National Council of Jewish Women.

Up several flights in the nondescript building in Tel Aviv in which it is housed, visitors from arecent Hadassah Mission entered the single room of this workshop, which been subdivided intospaces for machine sewing, alterations, changing of clothes for fittings, and pattern cuttingaround a long communal table. A simple sink, small refrigerator and some appliances for heatingfood gleam near the door. Jars of buttons and pins are neatly placed on simple shelves. Acommunal bathroom is on the floor below. It is in this space that up to 50 women a year aregiven the means, economic and psychological, to break away from lifetimes of abuse.

Each woman has her own history here. Some are drop in’s who are not ready to leaveprostitution. For skill and ego building their first project is to machine stitch their own, simpledrawstring bag. Those of us who remember junior high sewing classes where the machineseemed to run away from us— can see what a sense of control these women achieve during thecourse of this project. It’s the first step, often leading to enrollment in classes meeting on setdays and times, leading to certification as seamstress or pattern maker, in the fashion industry.(Next year a course in marketing, via computer, will be added.) A culminating project for theworkshop is a fashion show mounted in a beautiful venue, with their pieces worn by actresses, and CEO’s. Material and time are donated by designers and fabric shops in Israel. The gowns aresold and some stores place orders.

For the past three years, Turning the Tables has been partly funded by The Hadassah Foundation. The Foundation was endowed with a ten million dollar grant to assist low income women toachieve economic independence. The twenty recipient organizations receive stipends from theinterest, not the principal of this grant. We can donate directly to the foundation, stipulatingwhich entity should receive our contribution.

Turning the Tables has received much recognition. It was featured in an NY Times article:Prostitutes in Israel are Finding New Lives in Training for the Fashion World (January 3, 2013).Itsmodel will be replicated in other Israeli cities, with the help of the Israel Social Security system. On June 29th its Founder and Executive Director, Lilach Tzur Ben-Moshe, was awardedHadassah’s 2016 Tannebaum Prize. In her honor the Hadassah Foundation has also released avideo highlighting Ben-Moshe and her work: https://youtu.be/X7zUs86BWmI

How It Works: TD Bank will make an annual contribution on the enrollment anniversary date to HADASSAH ROOKLYN REGION based on the activity of all participating TD Bank accounts. Eligible accounts include business and consumer checking, savings, money market, CDs and retirement.

Fundraising Potential

Kathleen Marcario, TD Bank Vice President proudly presents our first "TD Bank Affinity Program" check of $665.99 to our Immediate Past President Janet Young.

Checking Accounts: • $50 for each new checking account, opened and maintained at least 3 months prior to the enrollment anniversary date. After the year the checking account is opened, it is reclassified as existing. • $10 for every existing checking account Savings or CD deposits • 1/10 of 1% contribution based on upon average annual balances. To be included in the annual contribution calculation, the balance for any deposit account must be maintained or grown (ie, it cannot decrease) in the contribution year. In addition, please note that: • Existing accounts can be designated for inclusion in the program. • There is absolutely no cost to you. • Participation is completely voluntary. • TD Bank will keep all of your information strictly confidential.
