C& R ManufacturingHow they were doing the job on a 3‐axis VMC

• 5 separate operations – one of the 5 operations was using an indexer.• Running production quantities in the 300 – 400 piece range.• Used multiple vises or tooling plates to accommodate multiple parts.• Running only one operation per setup.• Total machining time to complete a part was 10 minutes.• Total setup time was 4 hours.

Challenges C&R experienced with previous process• Part quantities reduced from 300‐400 pieces per lot size to only 35‐200 pieces• The frequency of the smaller lot sizes were also increasing.• A “tribal knowledge” of the setups  was necessary and limited the pool of capable

employees available to run this particular job.• The multiple setups that were required created quality issues.• Setup times were too long, and multiple changeovers were necessary.

The solution C&R chose was the Hurco VMX30U• The trunnion table configuration appealed to the customer. • The correct machine size to accommodate most of the customer’s part sizes –

without being too large (Hurco VTXU), or too small (Hurco VM10U).• The acceptable “Z” axis table height accommodated the taller fixtures.• Large enough to place multiple parts on the fixture at one time.• 40‐tool magazine to accommodate the number of necessary tools per project.• The overall work envelope of the Hurco VMX30U fit the customer’s needs.
