Investigative Journalism Western Literature Welcome to The SkyView Sentinel Reporting Team! Objectives Students will be able to investigate a Greek or Roman myth by evaluating their sources to determine the central idea or theme of the story.HOW? Investigative Reporting : Greek Mythology Edition Closed Case Files Each team will receive one copy of the case files for the myth. Each case file contains: SOURCE #1: Page numbers to refer to Edith Hamiltons Mythology SOURCE #2: An original version of the myth from Ovid in his famous poem Metamorphoses SOURCE #3: A famous painting featuring some of the characters of the myth SOURCE #4: A poem that takes a unique depiction of the myth that you must figure out tone, mood, and theme Ovids Metamorphoses Metamorphoses is a long narrative poem written in Latin by the famous Roman poet, Ovid around 8 A.D. You will read excerpts from a translation by Charles Martin. He stays true to the verse form of the poem. This is a challenging text. Collaborate and ask questions to understand the poem. Read The Painting In your case files, you will have a painting that you must read. Analyze what is in the foreground (the front of the painting) and what is in the background (the back of the painting). Analyze the use of color and symbolism. How are the characters portrayed in the paintings? Is it how you imagined the myth? What artistic interpretations exist in the painting? TO-DO LIST STEP ONE: Read and analyze the sources for your myth. STEP TWO: Complete your source evaluation (due Friday). STEP THREE: Prepare your story pitch and visual aid for class on Monday (after break). Homework Source evaluation chart is due on Friday!
