investigation-life cycle of birds

By: Teacher Madiha Learning all about birds. It was a magnificently warm day and together we decided to go on a walk to the An- Nur Academey ‘s shady grass area. It was there that Isa heard bird sounds and was very much intrigue d. He guided all of us to be quite and to listen to the majestic sounds of the bird and to spot the bird. Even the toddlers Khizer and Aisha were curious as to who was making the sounds and where it was coming from. This incident led us on the mission to find out about the types of birds and their life cycle. After our walk we used the computer to look up the birds we saw on our walk. The children were fascinated by the different types of birds Allah SWT has created. We discussed the colors, size, shapes patterns on their body and so forth. When I said asked the children where did the birds come from? Bilal quickly answered that “the birds come from the tree”. I said yes that is correct but from where do they come from to sit on the tree? Samera said “I know teacher Madiha, Allah created them”. I said Masha Allah, yes you are right too but I want to know where they come from. You came from your mother’s tummy and I want to know where the birds came from. To my surprise Isa snorted “they come from their mommy’s tummy too”. I asked “ do they really Isa? He laughed and said “no, they come from eggs”. “Yes yes” shouted Sarah and my “chickens came from eggs too and they were little and I bring them to kindy, you saw it Isa? You saw my chickens? Do you like me Isa” Isa noded and said “yes and I saw them on tv too”. Here the interesting conversation changed so I intervened and we had a look at some more pictures of bird nests with eggs inside. The next day we went outside to see if we can find bird nests but the subject soon changed to children being curios about the trees. Afifah and Athifa were intrigued by the roots of the tree above the grounds while Isa, Arrsalan and Bilal were more concerned about the tree sizes. Samera thought the trees were dirty and didn’t wanted to come around the corner. Out of our discussion about life cycl e of plants and trees, we decided to go bac k inside, and search the topic using th e laptop. At the end of our search we printed a sheet that demonstrate the life cycle of tree.

Same day after lunch the children and I painted a tree using recycled cardboard paper. We learnt how to

make the brown colour by mixing primary colours together. Once it was dry, we labeled the different

parts of the tree before hanging it up on our wall. Here we had to ‘problem-solve’ as the staple gun that

we used, wasn’t strong enough to hold the cardboard. T. Fatima suggested that we cut holes and use

string and we agreed with her and it worked.

On our last day of investigation we made birds using different color card paper and placed them on our

tree. After that we printed a time-line of bird life and together we placed them in order. We wrote

about each picture. We then went to uncle Dr Alayan office o show him our poster and to tell him all

about what we had learnt about birds. Isa,Bilal, Arrsalan were very confident but the girls felt rather shy

to speak and the toddlers were more interested in what was around uncle ’s office. Uncle Alayan then

gave us some food and took us outside to feed birds.

We concluded our investigation by going on a trip to the museum. At the museum the children loved

looking at the different mummified birds. Masha-allah some children were very observant and

remembered the birds that we have looked up on the computer.

Allhamdullillah the children loved this investigation and we will insha allah continue to provide them

with fun filled learning activities that derive from their interests.
