Your challenge is to be the fastest in your class to fly to each state and territory capital city using a commercial airline.

InquiryChoose an airline that fl ies from Sydney to Perth. Compare the fl ight durations for fl ying Sydney to Perth, and Perth to Sydney. Is there any di! erence? Why?

Using maths 2 Complete the map.

In groups, use Tear-out 1 Grid map of Australia (p167), and the coordinates in the table on the right of this page to mark the location of each capital city. Draw a compass on your map showing the four major and four intermediate compass points.

Draw and label the Tropic of Capricorn.

3 Predict the best route. Start your journey at your nearest capital city. Predict the

best route around Australia. Make sure you include every capital city.

4 Find flights and make a table. Consult the flight schedules of various airlines to plan

your route.

On a table or spreadsheet, record the departure times and arrival times in 24-hour time, and the flight duration for each stage of your journey.

5 Which direction are you going? Refer to your table and draw arrows on your map showing

the start and finishing points of each leg of your journey. Use compass points to work out the direction of each leg.

Label the arrows.

Reasoning and reporting6 Who finished fastest? Compare your maps and tables with those of another

group. Check the accuracy of their flight directions and their coordinates for each capital city.

Did anyone take off from a city before their previous flight arrived?

Who finished flying in the quickest time? How did they achieve this?

Can this trip be done in less than 24-hours?

Justify the flight path you chose.
