Opening TurningPoint

A common mistake occurs when people open Powerpoint expecting the receivers to then work with their presentation. You must first of all invoke the TurningPoint plugin, by starting Powerpoint polling via the TurningPoint software.

1. Double click on the TurningPoint icon on your desktop or click Start → All Programs → Turning Technologies, LLC → TurningPoint. Note this should be installed on all Media Services installed PCs.

2. If using Windows 7 or 10, just type in “Turningpoint” into the search box after pressing the Start button.

3. In version 8 of the software you will be asked to login to an account. The screen will look like this screen below. Standard accounts will be included in the bags provided until such time as your own account is created.

4. If you have not an account to login with, you can create offline content. By clicking this button you will see the image below

5. If you login, the only difference is the addition of the options below.

6. Select PowerPoint Polling. PowerPoint Polling allows you to create content for the handsets and receivers. These can be booked via [email protected].

7. If using Office 2013 you may select Blank Presentation or open a previous presentation. Note that TurningPoint.

Creating an Interactive Slide

When TurningPoint is opened, a non-interactive PowerPoint slide is displayed. To begin, add a title and put your name as the subtitle for the presentation.

All functionality of TurningPoint is accessed through the TurningPoint tab, located on the main PowerPoint ribbon menu bar. See the image below in which TURNING POINT has been selected.

1. Click on the TurningPoint tab and then NEW option to access the drop down menu. See below for the icon.

2. Select the Multiple Choice slide type from the various question types.

3. Click in the Enter Question Text… section. Type your Question text. This is your chance to enter some questions around your subject area. In this example you can see I chose the question “What is the closest planet to the sun?”

4. Click in the “Enter Answer Text” section. This will allow you to type an answer. Type the first answer beside Number 1 (or the letter A, depending on the configuration).

5. See below in this example, I wrote the answer “Mercury”.

6. Press the Return key on your keyboard, type the second possible answer beside number 2 (or the letter B). Repeat this step until you have entered all the possible answers for your question.

7. Repeat steps 2 to 6 another three times (thereby creating more slides with different questions as you choose the New button ).

8. You will then now have four interactive slides.

Adding Additional Interactive Slide Objects

These elements can add some useful functionality to your presentation.Return to your first interactive slide. On the left side of the PowerPoint screen.

Click on the Objects option on the TurningPoint tab to access the drop down menu.

Select Prompt → Bevel. This will insert an Answer Now icon at the bottom of the slide. A prompt provides participants with a visual cue that the slide is a polling slide to which they can respond. A prompt can be made to appear on each polling slide that is created.

This will produce the bevel with the text “Answer Now”, you could however change this to be “Display Results” or alternative text.


Locate your second interactive slide.Click on the Objects option on the TurningPoint tab to access the drop down menu. Select Countdown → Square. This will insert a Square timer at the bottom right corner of the slide. The default time will be 30 seconds, but you can adjust this as you will see.

Click on the 30 in the center of the Square timer.

Type 20 into the Countdown Seconds field of the Slide Preferences options box, thus changing the countdown time to 20 seconds.

Locate your third interactive slide.Click on the Objects option on the TurningPoint tab to access the drop down menu. Select Response Counter. This will insert a Response Counter in the bottom left corner of the slide.

Countdown timers add a sense of urgency to the poll.

A Countdown timer provides participants with a visual cue that polling is about to close as it counts down to zero. When the countdown expires, the countdown timer disappears and polling is automatically closed. A countdown timer can be made to appear on each polling slide that is created.


Locate your fourth interactive slide.Click on the Object option on the TurningPoint tab to access the drop down menu. Select Grid → Table. This will insert a table onto the slide.

This Response Counter will display on screen the amount of received responses.During the Slide Show, the response counter displays the number of responses. For example, if there are 32 participants in the participant list, the response counter displays “0 of 32.” It continues to count as the responses are received and closes

This table will highlight when individual handsets have responded with the colour of the number box changing upon that particular handset registering its response.

There are 3 types of grid available.


Creating a Picture Slide

Instead of using textual answers in the answer region, you can use images.

Note: As you will be using images as answers you must use them with vertical, pie or doughnut slide options as the horizontal or the offset charts will not align properly.

1. Click on the New option on the TurningPoint tab to access the drop down menu.2. Select the Multiple Choice from the drop down menu.3. Click in the Enter Question Text… section. Type :

“Which of the following would you associate with “Gustave Eiffel”?

4. Click in the Enter Answer Text… section. Type “one” beside number the letter “A” (or number displayed number 1 if that is your configuration).

5. Press the Return key, type “two” beside number 2.6. Press the Return key, type “three” beside number 3. 7. Press the Return key, type “four” beside number 4.8. From the PowerPoint menu select Insert tab → Pictures. 9. Browse to the location of the images you wish to include.

10.From the Insert Picture dialogue, I am browsing to the Desktop in the image above where I have a folder containing the images. Open the TurningPoint folder.

11.Click on the first picture (Egypt), press and hold the Control key on your keyboard and click on the other three (England, France, Russia).

12.Click on insert.13.Resize and position the images the way you want them to appear on the slide, by

using the “grab handles” at the corners and sides of each image that appear once you select or highlight them.

14.Ensure no objects or images on the slide are selected by clicking outside the slide, or on an unoccupied area of the slide.

15.Select the image that corresponds to the first answer that will be represented by users selecting “1” or “A” on their keypad by clicking on it to select the image (for example choose Russia).

16.Select the image that corresponds to the second answer by holding the Control key and clicking it.

17.Repeat step 16 for the additional two images in the order you wish to relate to the choices.

18.Click on the TurningPoint Ribbon and Then Tools → convert to picture slide icon. The images on the slide should now appear beside the corresponding number.

Options during presentation (ShowBar - For Reference)The showbar appears when a polling slide is displayed during the Slide Show. The showbar is a toolbar that provides icons for polling, monitoring, viewing responses and other polling tools during the slide show. The showbar can be moved if necessary.

Below is a description for each icon on the showbar:When

minimized, the responses, polling status and maximize

The following table provides a description for each button on the showbar:

Minimize Showbar - When the showbar is minimized, the responses, polling status and maximize showbar button is displayed.Toggle Response Count - Toggle Response Count changes the values displayed on each chart. The values can be represented as response counts or percentage of votes.Repoll Question - Repoll Question clears the responses and accepts new responses from the participants for the currently displayed question. Both the original responses and the new responses are stored in the session file.Response Display - The Response Display button displays the participants and their responses to the question while polling is open. This information is displayed in real-time.Show/Hide Response Grid - The Show/Hide Response Grid toggles the display of a response grid on the screen to

indicate which participants have responded.

The visual display and contents of the response grid are controlled in the PowerPoint preferences.Countdown Timer - Insert a countdown timer on the current polling slide. Start or pause the countdown, as well as adjust the amount of time or position of the countdown. Polling must be open to use this feature.Insert New Question - Select a slide type from the drop-down menu to be inserted into the presentation.Attendance - Opens an attendance poll that allows the instructor to quickly determine if participants are present or absent. When the Attendance window is displayed, participants can press any button on their clickers/TurningPoint App to be counted as present. You can click the Present or Absent buttons to toggle which participants are displayed in the list. Click Close Polling to end the attendance poll.Set Anonymous - Makes the current slide anonymous. Participant information will not be associated with the results.Delete Last Question Polled - This option deletes the response data from the current question. This does not reset the chart, and the original results may be viewed in PowerPoint but the response data is not saved with the session.Data Slice - Data Slice allows the chart to display only the section of responses that correlate to chosen responses from previous slides.View Original Chart - Use this command after using the Toggle Response Count or Data Slice commands to return the chart to its original appearance.Display Participant Monitor - Display Participant Monitor opens the participant monitor.Show/Hide Connection Info - Show/Hide Connection Info displays the ResponseCard channel number. The TurningPoint App login information is also displayed if applicable.Display Messaging Window - Display Messaging Window opens the feedback monitor.Responses - Responses displays the number of participants that have responded to the current question.Polling Status - Polling Status displays the current polling status.

Saving Your Presentation and Session Data1. To save your presentation (PowerPoint), click the save icon on the PowerPoint

toolbar.

2. To save your session data after you have completed your presentation click on the save session icon in the TurningPoint tab.

3. The TurningPoint save session dialogue window opens; by default it will name the session file as “New Session date time.tpzx” in the Session folder. You can save this file wherever you like. By default, when you go to generate a report it will look for session data in the Session folder.

Generating and Reviewing Reports

You can create reports using the Report Tool from the Manage Tab in the TurningPoint Dashboard. Reports are generated from session data, so you must first have run a presentation before you can obtain session data and hence generate the report.

1. From the TurningPoint Dashboard, select the Manage tab.(You may have to close your PowerPoint presentation to get back to the Dashboard).

2. Select The Session drop-down option and then Import (This is where you import Session data from classes that you have given into the sessions folder in order to generate reports).

3. Select Move Session form the Session Import Window. This will help keep all your session files in one location for you to compare later.

4. Select the Session Data file from the TurningPoint folder on the desktop and select open.

5. Select the saved session (Session Data) file from the left panel(NOTE: Expand the associated participant list to view the session, or if a participant list was not used, locate the session below Auto or Anonymous)

6. Click Reports in the bottom right corner.7. Select a report from the drop-down menu.

(NOTE: you can export reports to Excel, CSV and HTM as well as being able to print reports from this window. Also please note the variables that you can apply to each report in the right hand pane.)

Setting Correct Answers and Adding Objects (Optional)

1. In the Slide Preferences Pane, click to expand Scoring Options and select the correct answer from the drop-down menu. Setting a correct answer automatically sets all other answer choices to incorrect.

2. Add a Correct Answer Indicator to give participants a visual confirmation of the correct answer after polling has closed.

3. Click the Objects icon from the TurningPoint ribbon/toolbar.4. Mouse over Correct Answer Indicator and select the indicator of your choice.

The Demographic Assignment slide assigns participants to demographic groups. Assigning participants to a demographic allows you to view how each demographic answered during the presentation.

1. From the TurningPoint ribbon/toolbar, click the New icon and select Demographic Assignment.

How do I reset a PowerPoint presentation?

The reset function in TurningPoint allows users to prepare the presentation for polling.

How to reset a PowerPoint Polling session...?

1. Click the Reset icon on the TurningPoint ribbon/toolbar.2. Select one of the following options:

Session - All of the results from the session file will be reset and all of the participant data will be removed.

Selected Charts (Slides) - Selected chart(s) will be reset but the session data and participant information will NOT be removed. When the presentation is run, the previous session data will also be stored in the session file.

If Session was selected in the previous step, click Save or don’t Save to save the current session data.
