INTRODUCTION TO THE SPORT MANAGEMENT INTERNSHIP

The sport management internship is the capstone course of the Lewis University Sport and Exercise Science Department’s Sport Management curriculum. The internship is a significant part of the student’s professional preparation. The internship is designed to provide the student with the opportunity to further integrate and apply knowledge and theory learned in academic coursework to actual sport management situations. The student is expected to perform responsibilities equivalent to those of a new staff member in the selected organization, under the close supervision of the cooperating field supervisor. It is expected that the student will become aware of and analyze his/her own work responsibilities, and that of colleagues in the department and organization.

SPORT MANAGEMANT INTERNSHIP PLAN AND OBJECTIVES

Regarding the knowledge of the organization, the student intern should be able to:

1. describe the organization and the client population served; 2. identify the mission statement of the organization; 3. demonstrate working knowledge of the organization’s policies and

procedures; 4. identify the services provided by the organization, as well as limitations

to service. Regarding the structure of the organization, the student intern should be able to:

1. identify the organizational goals, structures, technology and corporate environment;

2. identify both the formal and informal channels of communication within the organization;

3. identify the organizational structure and task distribution with the organization;

4. identify how the organization obtains its funding, and how those sources of revenue may influence policies and operations.

Representing the organization, the student intern should be able to:

1. represent the organization and its services positively; 2. give accurate information about the eligibility for and availability of

services to the public; 3. help the organization supply services to the public (as needed); 4. use policy and procedures without violating professional standards of

practice 5. demonstrate congruence between one’s own activities and overall

organization purpose and goals.

MUTUAL RESPONSIBILITIES FOR THE INTERNSHIP LEWIS UNIVERSITY SPORT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM DIRECTOR

1. Processes the student application for the sport management internship. 2. Provides consultation to sport organizations regarding the sport

management internship objectives.

3. Contact the internship site supervisor to confirm the participation, and the start date of the Lewis University Sport Management student as a student intern.

4. In conjunction with the course professor, conduct the Sport Management

oral/PowerPoint presentations. LEWIS UNIVERSITY INTERNSHIP COURSE PROFESSOR

1. Conducts the internship class, informing students of intern requirements, coordinating the intern experience, examining student-identified issues, and preparing students for the evaluation.

2. Schedules one conference during the internship semester with the

cooperating supervisor. 3. Initiates periodic phone and/or email contact with the cooperating

supervisor. 4. Reviews student journals weekly. 5. Is available as a resource person for the student.

INTERNSHIP SITE COOPERATING SUPERVISOR

1. Develops a learning climate and environment for the student in the organization through a workable learning/teaching plan or structure.

2. Gives assignments geared toward helping promote the student’s learning

and professional growth as a professional. 3. Meets weekly with the student to provide feedback and act as an educator

and model. 4. Serves as a role model. 5. Encourages innovative practice that is congruent with professional ethics

and values. 6. Develops with the student an individualized learning contract. 7. Evaluates the student’s progress in meeting learning goals on an ongoing

basis. 8. Prepares the mid-term and final evaluations of the student’s performance. 9. Informs the Lewis University internship course professor of any serious

blockages to learning, including unexcused absences from the worksite.

STUDENT INTERN

1. Becomes familiar with the goals, policies, structure, programming, and services of the organization in which placement occurs.

2. Participates in weekly conferences with his/her supervisor. 3. Prepares a daily journal of learning activities. The structure of the journal

should be developed according to the following format: (Specific journal

guidelines are provided in a handout at the end of this document) a. a brief summary of events, activities or experiences in which the student participated; b. an analysis of the student’s learning; c. an exploration of the student’s feelings and reactions during the experience. This should include impressions, attitudes, understanding self, and evaluation of what happened; d. the daily journals are compiled to format a weekly submission to the course professor, submitted via email; e. all email correspondence is to utilize one’s Lewis University email address. Personal email (example: hotmail, gmail) will NOT be recognized. (This course will follow the time-line that Lewis University establishes for the conversion of Lewis student email accounts to student gmail. accounts) F. the journal is to be sent as an attachment to any correspondence with the professor; G. the journal attachment is to be sent to the appropriate professor: Professor Karen K. Keeps a running count of clock hours on each journal submission. 5. Keeps a running count of clock hours which is to be signed weekly by the cooperating supervisor.

6. Takes the initiative in seeking advice, consultation, and help from the site coordinating supervisor, and from the professor of the course. 7. Is responsible for arranging his/her own transportation to and from the internship site. 8. Will act and dress in a manner of a professional, as defined by the current standard of his/her internship site. 9. Notifies the internship site coordinating supervisor of all unavoidable absences and tardiness in advance, as is expected in professional employment. 10. Completes work assigned by the internship site supervisor and is accountable for completing assigned duties and document preparation within specified deadlines. 11. Conducts oneself as a member of the profession and abides by the organization’s policies and procedures. 12. In cooperation with the on-site supervisor, the student will establish a learning contract/project. The learning contract/project maximizes the learning experience for the student. The nature of this project should be above and beyond the daily activities required of the internship. The project should reflect intellectual inquiry and critical thinking; integrating previously studied academic content with the capstone experience of the internship. The contract/project should address learning goals in three areas: internship site goals, personal goals, and professional goals. The goals should be individualized for the student and must be feasible in the specific internship site and attainable within the semester session. The student is expected to initiate working on the preparation of these goals and should have a preliminary working list of goals in place when one meets with the on-site supervisor.

This project and its written report should reflect an understanding or application of pertinent common professional components of sport management, i.e:

1. Social, psychological and international foundations of sport. 2. Sport management principles 3. Sport Leadership 4. Operations management, event and venue management 5. Sport Governance 6. Ethics 7. Sport Marketing 8. Sport Finance 9. Accounting 10. Economics of sport

The student will be required to submit a project proposal by the end of the 2nd week of one’s internship. The final written report must be submitted before a course grade is given. A summary of the learning goals and project will be included in the student’s final PowerPoint/oral presentation.

13.Prepares and makes an oral/PowerPoint presentation to faculty and students. Students completing Fall internships, but returning to campus in the fall will make his/her presentation at the start of the fall semester. A grade of “I” (Incomplete) will remain in place until one completes this assignment. The student must submit an electronic copy of the PowerPoint, saved on a CD, to remain in the files of the Sport and Exercise Science Department. The student is to print a “handout” copy of the slides for the department archives. This will remain the property of the Lewis University Sport and Exercise Science Department. The student’s written project will be kept as property of the department, and kept in a file with the CD.

Department of Sport and Exercise Science Internship Journal Format

The journal should be submitted weekly via email to the respective course professor and the SES department secretary. The journal should be submitted as an attachment. Each student should keep an electronic copy of each journal entry. The structure of each journal should be developed according to the following format: 1. Identifying Information Name of the student Name of the internship site Dates of activity covered by the log Date the log entry was made Total clock hours covered by the log 2. A brief summary of events, activities, or experiences in which the student participated.

The content of this section should be factual and the most concise of the log. The question to be answered is: “What happened?”

The type of activity The people involved Where and when it occurred A brief description of the activity, emphasizing the student’s role 3. An analysis of the student’s learning from empirical experiences. Learning and

instruction in the field is integrated with the theoretical and/or classroom learning. The student’s stance should be broad and comprehensive rather than only narrow and technical. The question to be answered in this part of the log is: “What did I learn?”

4. An exploration of the student’s feelings and reactions during and after his/her

experiences. This should include impressions, attitudes, understanding of self, and evaluation of what happened. This section will relate that student’s sensitivity to what is going on around him/her. Reactions may be positive or negative and may relate to peers, clients, professionals, college instructors, or to sport management in general. Questions regarding experiences or observations and their meaning may be included. In this section, the students’ stance should be introspective. The question to be answered is; “How did I feel about it?”

5. Evaluation and planning section. The student should evaluate the effectiveness of the

Internship experience, including one’s role in plans for future action. The student should also specify areas in which one would like to extend experiences or learning about professional practices. The question to be answered in this part of the log is: “What are my plans for next week?”

Written/Oral Report Requirements Fall, 2016

The student is to submit a written report at the conclusion of the internship experience. The report is designed to be an in-depth summary, review and reflection of the student’s internship experience and student internship project. The paper must be typed, be prepared with a cover page, pages numbered, and placed in an appropriate binder. The paper will remain the property of the Lewis University Sport and Exercise Science Department, and will not be returned. It is recommended that the student keep a personal copy of his/her written report. The report is not designed to be a description of daily activities (as indicated in weekly journals), but rather an in-depth review and discussion of the clinical site as a professional organization and its influence on one’s future professional goals; and an in-depth description, review, and analysis of one’s student internship project. Regarding the summary of the internship site, the report is to minimally include the following: 5. Description of the organization and the client population served 6. Identification of the mission statement of the organization 7. Identification of the services provided by the organization, as well as

the limitations to service.

Regarding the student internship project which was done in conjunction with one’s supervisor, the report is to minimally cover:

1. A description of the project, including goals and anticipated outcomes

2. A description, review, and reflection of the process and time-line of the

project

3. Final outcomes of the project

4. A review and reflection of the outcomes

5. Copies of any student created documents developed for the project

As a final summary in the paper, the student is to include a reflection of the overall internship experience. Included should be recommendations for future students who may elect to complete an internship at the same or comparable site.

The paper is due: Wednesday, August 3, 2016. The paper MUST be delivered in a printed hard copy, not electronically. The student must plan for the paper to arrive by the deadline. Students graduating at the end of the Fall will submit their PowerPoint on the disc and printed handouts at this time.

The student must be prepared to participate in a roundtable discussion on Monday, August 30 from 4:30-5:45pm. The class will meet in Sheil Hall room 045 Students are also required to present an oral/PowerPoint report to faculty and student members of the Sport and Exercise Science Department. Oral reports should be based on content from the paper. Oral reports have a maximum time limit of 8 minutes. NOTE: Both the written report and oral report will be evaluated on content as well as professional presentation.
