How To Be The One Selected For The Job of Your Dreams

• If you want the job of your dreams you need to focus on two important sets of skills– First, the technical skills in your program of

study– Second, and equally important, you must

know and practice good WORK ETHICS

What Are Work Ethics?• A POSITIVE attitude toward your job, your

customers, your co-workers, and your employer• A POSITIVE and CONSISTENT set of behaviors

that indicate you want to exceed the expectations of customers, your co-workers, and your employer

MODULE ONE

Objectives• Understand the Importance of Attendance• Understand the Importance of Punctuality• Attend Class on Time• Leave Class on time• Notify Instructor IN ADVANCE Of Planned

Absence• Make Up Assignments Punctually

Activity• Discuss relevance of each objective in relation

to college classes and employment.• Ask for student input on each objective

TEAMWORK

MODULE TWO

Objectives• Maintain honest behavior in all situations• Be trustworthy, dependable, and reliable in

meeting all job responsibilities• Be willing to initiate projects and follow them

through to completion• Demonstrate self-discipline and self-

responsibility

Activity• Discuss relevance of each objective in relation

to college classes and employment.• Ask for student input on each objective

CHARACTER

MODULE THREE

Objectives• Maintain honest behavior in all situations• Be trustworthy, dependable, and reliable in

APPEARANCE

MODULE FOUR

Objectives• Understand the importance of appearance in

the classroom and work environment• Display appropriate dress according to chosen

career field• Have a groomed and neat appearance• Practice good personal hygiene• Use correct and polite behavior in all settings

Activity• Have students discuss appropriate dress as it

applies to their chosen career field• One day during the week have students dress

with what they consider to be appropriate dress for their career field

• Discuss correct and polite behavior in classes and on the job (See next slide)

Correct and Polite Behavior• Not interrupting others while they are talking• Not carrying on side conversations while

someone is talking• Considering other’s feeling and concerns when

making decisions or comments• Being respectful of instructors and classmates• Providing assistance when asked

Activities• Discuss how to demonstrate a positive attitude

MODULE SIX

Objective• Understand and follow safety practices in

classrooms and laboratories• Keep work area neat and clean• Follow directions and procedures• Conserve materials and resources

Activities• Discuss importance of following safety

procedures and the impact on a “lost-time accident” on corporate profitability

• Discuss impact of material or resource waste on the bottom-line

• Discuss good housekeeping and its relationship to safety and productivity

• Relate following directions to safety and productivity

ORGANIZATION

MODULE SEVEN

Objectives• Demonstrate skill in prioritizing• Demonstrate skill in time management• Demonstrate skill in managing stress• Demonstrate flexibility in handling change

Activities• Discuss process for setting priorities in family

life, work life, and school life.• Demonstrate your system of time management

and ask students to discuss methods they use• Discuss stress, what are causes of stress, and

methods for managing stress• Discuss nature of change and how best to deal

with change at work and in your personal life

COMMUNICATION

MODULE EIGHT

Objective• Understand the importance of good

communication skills• Understand how nonverbal communication

skills affect their overall communications in the classroom and at work

• Use effective listening techniques• Use proper oral communication skills

Activities• Discuss good communications (e.g., the message

received is the message sent). Discuss source of distortion that could affect good communication

• Demonstrate the effect nonverbal communication has on effectiveness of communications

• Demonstrate effective listening skills (e.g., don’t interrupt, repeat back, listen to nonverbal signals)

• Demonstrate proper oral communications techniques (e.g., proper volume, use of pauses, use of hand gesture, ask receiver for understanding of message)

COOPERATION

MODULE NINE

Objectives• Display leadership skills• Practice good conflict-management skills• Demonstrate problem-solving capabilities• Maintain good working relationships with

supervisors and co-workers• Follow the chain of command

Activities• Discuss leadership traits and behaviors. Ask for

examples from students• Discuss methods of conflict management (e.g.,

avoidance, accommodation, forcing solution, bargaining, problem solving)

• Discuss how to manage relationships in the work and class setting

• Discuss the concept of chain of command and situations where it might be appropriate to go outside the chain of command

RESPECT

MODULE TEN

Objectives

• Deal appropriately with cultural/racial diversity

• Understand harassment and how to diffuse harassment

Activities• Discuss diversity and its role in profitability and

effectiveness of organizations• Discuss methods for helping people accept

diverse cultures/races/genders• Discuss behaviors which could be perceived as

harassment.• Discuss methods for dealing with harassment

(refer back to conflict management)
