Rather than swooping in and “fixing” things ourselves, PEPY aims to equip motivated community members with the tools they need to identify and address the specific education needs of their students and schools.

We started out by building schools and giving things away, but then we realized that school buildings don’t teach kids. Instead, we focus on creative thinking, problem solving, & creative expression through these classes which supplement school offerings.

In October 2006, we tested the students and found that many in PEPY’s first partner school could not read and write in Khmer. We decided to focus on Khmer literacy by increasing students’ access to reading materials and encouraging teachers to incorporate more books into their classes.

SAS identifies schools that have a high level of participation from their principals & communities and spends 3-5 years working with them to identify their needs and priorities, helping them to cultivate their own capabilities and to build strong School Support Committees (SSCs).

A Chanleas Dai school & community have been learning how to grow mushrooms! This initiative is the beginning of what they hope will be a life skills program for students that offers agricultural knowledge and income-generating ideas.

Teacher team leaders have led their school in making effective learning resources using minimal materials. The school support committee fundraised the majority of the budget for its resource-making workshop.

The goal is to enable motivated young leaders from Chanleas Dai and the surrounding area to afford the costs associated with university or teacher training school while empowering them to be the funders of future scholarship recipients.

We foster students' creativity and self-confidence through supplementary English classes. These programs also give students a competitive advantage when pursuing their dreams for the future.

The focus of this initiative is to build the skills of all 5th and 6th grade government teachers in the commune so they are better equipped to teach English in their government schools.

Over 30 students meet each week for about an hour, during which students work on a wide variety of projects in the field of engineering.

The Bike-to-School Program provides the opportunity for students to continue their education after 6th grade by offering a bike to those living far away from school to be able to attend their classes.

Government teachers in Cambodia get paid an average of 50 to 100 USD per month, a barely liveable wage for an individual, much less a family. Teacher Livelihoods provide supplemental income to dedicated teachers, so that they can focus on education.

Classroom libraries focus on fostering a love of reading in students by increasing access to books and incorporating books into the classroom.

Over 50 classrooms in Chanleas Dai commune now offer Khmer reading material and children’s books, plus PEPY supports a library reading room as well.

The Child-to-Child uses an active learning initiative to encourage children to identify pressing problems, research them, take action towards a goal, & evaluate their progress before repeating the cycle again. Through this process, the children become the change makers!

Child-to-Child clubs encourage children to identify issues they encounter on a regular basis, such as dengue fever or pollution, and then plan a course of action to work for change within their own neighborhoods.

Currently, there are 14 Child Clubs, and we have 8 educators to facilitate these clubs. We recently started Youth Clubs as well for older students.

Currently, each village is constructing community centers to accommodate the growing child clubs. Every village has donated the time, materials, and land to create a dedicated space.

20 graduating 9th grade students who live in Chanleas Dai commune decided to start their own organization to help their communities.

They began teaching English to community members in seven villages as well as starting clean-up initiatives to alleviate the litter problem seen in many villages.

They now have 47 members (students in grades 7-12) and teach over 750 students per day in 20 classes which take place 5 nights per week in locations across the commune. The commune chief donated a small building to them. We can’t wait to see what problems they tackle next!
